Which .30 caliber? Then which rifle to put it in?

Wow lots of posts for the m1 for hunting:eek: that is a very heavy rifle to be packing around climbing mountains with. I guess the way I hunt is not the norm, as we hike in tall steep mountains 10 hours per day or at least until your animal is harvested and then pack the animal and all of your equipment out. The M1 is a great rifle and I am not disbuting that, but it would not be my choice as a primary hunting rifle.

Thank you all for sharing your answers to my questions. And in summary, it sounds like I should get either a .308, a .30-06, a 6.5mm, a 6mm, a .270, a .338 or some other caliber, in an Encore, an M1, a 700, an A-bolt, an X-bolt, a Savage or some other rifle. I knew you guys would be a lot of help.:D
 
How about a Weatherby Vanguard in 06--I had one in .300 Win Mag, very well made gun and very accurate--I think they run around $600 +---
