Here's a couple of links to the previously done threads on this subject. This is a fun thing once in a while, and since our membership has grown so much lately, this is a good way to get to know our fellow members.

There was a cute story behind my old username. My new one is fairly boring, much like myself.

Dad's name is Donald, but he hated being called "Donald Duck" when he was a kid, so he thought he'd outsmart folks by naming me just plain "Don."

This was not dad's most brilliant hour. My friends aren't all that creative anyway, so "dumbass" substitutes nicely in their minds...... :D

Only the old-timers and regulars know my secret identity and I'm not telling. ;)

A 1900's Ideal tool manual reprinted some handloaders' comments about their products.

The boys back then used nicknames like
"Prairie Dog", "Leather Stocking", etc.

Frank MacKenzie of Concord, Michigan used
"Oatka".

There's an Urban Legend that as long as you mention a man's name, he's not completely dead. That, and as a salute to those old time handloaders, prompted me to adopt
"Oatka".

I'd like to think that Frank would approve of that.

Man, I love this.

Great stories. Plenty of meaning behind a good portion of cyber names.

Keep'em comming!

akira - Well, gosh... I thought your handle might be intended to pay homage to the late great film maker Akira Kurosawa. :)

I was named after a gas station. Cliff Archer Chevron in Larkspur, CA to be exact. My Dad worked there when he was a teenager and both my parents just liked the name "Cliff."

It's a not terribly common first name and seldom already claimed on various forums.

If I DID have to come up with a handle it would probably be something geeky - say, "inode." UNIX weenies will understand.

:)

I am the Correia.

Actually its my last name, pronounced like "Korea". Most regulars and folks who have been here a while know that my full name is Larry Correia. I guess that I just don't have a lot of imagination.

Don't worry Don your secret is safe with me. :)

Well, my ORIGINAL name here, kframe_19, was for my love of Smith & Wesson Model 19s.

Then KFRAME, who beat me here by a couple of months, threatened me with lots of whining and moaning if I didn't change it. :D

Actually, he asked politely, and I was already considering going to my real name, which Mom and Dad gave to me, so I politely acquiessed.

I did, however, give brief though to challenging him to a duel... :)

Chances are he knows how to use it.

well as mike irwin and a few others know,
mine comes from the (now defunct) GO firearms forum from compuserve. the policy was "real names please" or at least a believable name. i shortened mine to a set of initials combined with my state. stuck with it out of habit .

Great topic!

I borrowed "Koolau" from the title character of a favorite Jack London short story "Koolau the Leper". Won't give away the plot in case someone wants to read it (highly recommended!), but freedom, dignity, a Mauser rifle and some of the most beautiful scenery on the face of the earth figure prominently in the story.

The "2" in "Koolau 2" indicates I originally messed up registering "Koolau" as a username in this group. (One should not operate computing machinery under the influence of brewski).

BTW, I'm not a leper or afflicted with any other strange prime-time TV disease, but I am a certified "Hoppe-a-holic". :)

Hey Mike Irwin

A great quote from the Highlander "there can only be one"

Should have went with the duel. Would have been interesting. Wouldn't have missed it for the world. :)

Might I suggest champagne corks at 10 paces for the duel? :)

I think Glamdring also slayed "The Evil One", great sword and it has its own ego. Tolkien was the best!

So....you are a fed huh? Just kidding :) Ve hav vays of meking you tallk...

Well, back in the days when the net was obscure and wasn't called the "net", you had to come up with a username on your favorite BBS, and you usually wanted to keep yourself anon as possible. Thus the infamous "dex" was born among the rabble of 286mhz processors and 5 1/4 floppy drives. The rest is history or at least spent bits in the Great Big Bit Bucket In The Sky.

I hear ya Jim!

My initials: GRD

In other online activities I've gone by the name 'arc'...which (among other things) is the flash of electric violence in the instant before an old amplifier vacuum tube self destructs. BLAMMO!

PS: Great names in here :)

Glamdring: Ah, yes, Tolkien, the father of the genre. Wonderful literature! An elvish name for an elvish sword. Every weapon should have a name!

'Seronac' is something that I just came up with after several weeks of thinking about it. I use for nearly everything now: games, Yahoo!, eBay, etc. It was going to be the name of a character in a fantasy novel I was going to write, but haven't yet because I'm still trying to work out the story, settings, etc.

Another cool name I've seen is 'Arvydas Kliore', I think he's an engineer at NASA's JPL. I've never even seen a picture of him (her?) but the name is exotic, fantastic and other-worldly - very cool.
