When do you favor revolvers and when do you favor autos?

I favor my autos for concealed carry and nightstand duty due to the night sights I have on them. I favor my 357 revolver when I'm camping or hiking in the woods due to the power and ability to take down more predators than my 9mm's.

At the range I like both, although I shoot the autos more due to the cost of ammo. Someday I will learn to reload for my 357 though.

I've been a handgunner for 50 years or so and have owned a variety of autoloaders and revolvers...even a Contender. While I appreciate the merits of the Glock, the 1911 and others, for my purposes these days pretty much exclusively a revolver guy. My CC gun is a 642 normally. An 8 shot 327pc occasionally. I got serious about my choice of guns when I began carrying. A .38 snubby offers the best balance of power and concealability. I've experienced too many ftf's, stovepipes, and other hiccups with autoloaders to feel comfortable trusting my life to one, even if there was one as light, powerful and concealable as the 642. Also, being a handloader, I enjoy not having to have a scavenger hunt for my brass at every shooting session, as well as the fact that revolvers function with whatever you feed them. I do have a couple of Ruger .22 autoloaders--a Mk I and a 22/45....both fun for plinking....and a p3at which I occasionally carry as backup. I've noted that many who carry autoloaders as their primary carry snubbies as backup. It seems that it should be the other way around. As someone pointed out, the snubby which can be carried in hand in a pocket offers the best first shot capability and "five for sure."

I really like revolvers more. My first handgun was a Blackhawk in .357 mag. Then an AK pistol, a .22 revolver, and then a Baby Eagle. I really have the most fun with my RG .22 revolver. The AK is a blast to just shoot but not practical in any way for the most part. And the Baby Eagle holds 16 rounds of 9mm so I will never need to worry about not enough ammo. I got it to carry, even though I was looking for a revolver but this gun had such a nice price I couldn't pass it up. My next handgun will be either a single shot .50 black powder pistol or a .44 black powder revolver.

I am a revolver guy at heart. I only own 1 semiautomatic and it is in a revolver round (357 magnum)

I don't dislike autos I just like the 357 magnum and that means revolvers.

My dad is all revolver, but he isn't really a "gun guy" other than self-defense.
I mean to say, he isn't really an enthusiast or collector of firearms. He is more so a practitioner of self-defense (including unarmed).
They are reliable and easy to use. Malfunction? Just pull the trigger again.

I prefer autos, but that might just be my generation :]

This question is entirely subjective in nature so the following represents simply my way of thinking.

Either will serve just fine for any purpose with the exception being travel in high-crime laiden areas whereby I fear for my life in a Reginald Denning analogous kind of way if you will. My high capacity semis can afford me up to what ever amount of rounds I desire. Sure I could achieve similar results with a revolver and its corresponding speed-loders or moon-clips but in a much more cumbersome manner (just to reiterate, solely MO).

Outside of that one particular albeit unlikely scenario, flip a coin as it all be comes coke or pepsi for me.

Funny, I was thinking about this last night.

It will definitely be a revolver when it absolutely, positively HAS to work.

Gyvel,

I agree with that--a semi definitely mandates that the shooter be knowledgeable concerning clearing jams, double-feeds or any kind of FTE/FTF. I am trained for such eventualities (yet still carry a BUG to be sure) but unfortunately I am sure there are some shooters (perhaps new to the field or what have you) that carry a semi or use one for HD that never consider such.

Even though my experience both on a personal basis as well as research shows that a revolver failure of whatever type is relatively speaking (far) more unlikely than a semi, if there is one it is generally catastrophic if the event occurs during a dangerous life-threatening encounter--Logically, I say a BUG for CCW is as important (forgive me for the analogy) as underwear is for pants--is it required, no but I feel a heck of a lot more comfortable/secure using both in either scenario;).

-Cheers

I've found that if there is a chance of a human threat outside I find myself going for the 9mm. If it's an animal threat I'll grab the .357. Both of these are usually secondary to the 870.

I shoot and carry both. The auto when out and about and i can cover it with a jacket or shirt. a wheel gun when I am out and about and can cover it with a jacket or shirt. for a suit and tie event my S&W 642 in a pocket. The Mood of the day decides the carry.

I like revolvers when there is an "emergency need" to jam the muzzle into somethings rib cage to shoot. Extreme close quarters. Autos tend to get knocked out of battery. I like autos for everything else.

G35 & G27 at work. Sp101 and 642 at home.
