Whats YOUR favorite shotgun?

Mossberg 930 SPX

I'll take a Mossberg 590 for most chores a 12 gauge might need to cover around the range. For clays I like a nice, cheap Stoeger Uplander, o/u or s/s. I like H&R/NEF single shots, too! Coach guns! My old Mossberg Mav 88 six-banger!

Heck, I like shotguns in general.

I agree, I like most all shotguns for some unexplainable reason.

Me too but for me, it's entirely explicable:

1) They are arguably the best CQC 'CIVILIAN' weapon to be had at extremely affordable prices in virtually any desired configuration. The lethality of buckshot for property defense is not to be debated (literally, you will not find anyone that will question one's reliance on buckshot for HD/SD purposes which in a world where consensus seems to be unattainable, speaks volumes as to its efficacy/effectiveness). And if you think about that, it's unusual in that with pistols/revolvers there is always a debate on this caliber vs. that caliber or this load vs. that load, ball vs. hp etc...Bottom line, shotguns loaded with buckshot are undeniably one of if not the best choice a civilian can make to defend their environment/being.

Conversely relative to price, it's difficult to find a hangun, rifle or carbine that can equal the unquestionable lethality of buckshot (slug as well when applicable) for under $200. Sure I can get a 1911, an AR, Mini-14 etc. and feel utterly confident/secure, but it would bemuch more expensive as we all know and in this world, affordability is becoming PARAMOUNT in importance.

2) The shotgun is as much AMERICAN (as they say) as Baseball, Apple Pie and Chevrolet! Simply put, it's symbolic of our very culture itself.

True, IF you mean a pump gun, but since pump guns are a small minority of shotguns, you might want to think outside the borders.

oneounceload,

Can you elaborate (I don't think I follow)--It's been a long day so bear with me.

Shotguns were created in other countries outside of the US borders - single shots, O/U, SxS guns were all created somewhere else first - that was the intention of my statement, whereas the pump is and has been, a US icon

oneounceload,

Got it--The U.S. seems to the only country where they really took off so to speak I guess, in both the civilian and LE&Military realms.

The humble yet venerable pump shotgun has certainly earned its place as one of the most popular firearms in America. Here are a few reasons:
  • They don't cost a lot of money.
  • They're very versatile, especially if you have screw in chokes and a good set of adjustable sights.
  • They're mostly unregulated and easy to obtain, even in gun control hells like California and New York.
  • They're easy to get proficient with.
  • Lastly, and most importantly, they work: They cycle quickly, rarely malfunction, and with the right loads, will kill just about anything caught on the wrong end of them.
No gun collection is complete without one.

Winchester Super X Model 1

Got it for Christmas when I was 13. That's almost 35 years ago, but who's counting.

My vote is for the Browning Double Auto-a shotgun I've owned since 1961. Runner-up is my Merkel 147 EL twenty gauge. Both are great upland (grouse and woodcock) guns.

My new Mossberg M590A1, which also happens to be my very first shotgun (not sure how that worked out). I'll post pictures once I tell the wife I bought it
