What's your favorite round

The venerable .45!
.45 acp for all-around shooting and SD
.45 Colt as a specialty - Cowboy to magnum loads!
.460 Rowland as a pistol magnum load
.454 Casull for SD in the woods

Favorite caliber

Is, am and will always be...A .44 S&W Special. I like the ideas in ammunition that are extant in these days. My hide it and love it is a Charter .44spl with Glaser silvers in the cylinder with 2 HKS loaders with 200gr GDHPs and 2 with Hornady 185gr XTP loads.

For pistols there is no equal to a .45acp in MY opinion. I love shooting it, but it gets very expensive. Gold Dot 230's and Golden Saber 185 +Ps are my two favorite rounds. 45's just feel right. There is no snap, but a push. It's like hitting a baseball on the sweet spot of the bat, you don't feel anything. Whereas, .40 S&W is like when you hit the ball off the end of the bat and feel it in your hands. That said, .40 S&W is a great round, just not for me.

For rifles I love the 5.56/.223 round. I particularly like Black Hills and Hornady TAP rounds. There is no recoil and the round is very accurate and effective.

Well, hell; you gotta like Willie Lowman's choice! Nice.
Now, for handgun?: For me , .45 auto with 230gr LRN. Shoot that ALL day.
Lots of good choices out there, thats just mine.

I'd have to say my favorite is 9mm. Everyone has their own opinion, but to me anything larger than a 9mm is uncomfortable in a smaller CC pistol. The 9mm can function in small pistol like a Rohrbaugh R9, and still be a pretty effective round. The 9mm is fun to shoot out of larger pistols and carbines.

But in general I have to agree the 9mm is adequate at a lot of things but not the best at any one thing.

On the other hand - some calibers that are good SD rounds can also be used to have fun hunting - like the 357 mag, 44mag and 10mm.

It might be fun to have a 10mm for SD and take it hog hunting...

Has anyone taken a S&W .500 magnum hunting? Man that sounds like FUN !

On the other hand - having a beautiful S&W 617 and firing that single action right through the X on targets... oh my gosh - that's like perfection - that's like heaven.

Ugh.. I don't know what my favorite round is, now you made my brain hurt.

If I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be the 454 Casull. Smaller cartridges are generally more practical but there is something very satisfying about unleashing that much power from a handgun, especially on a live or reactive target.

Stand up---you'll feel better.:p:D

OK, couldn't resist. I like the .45, I enjoy shooting my 1911's and SIG's in that caliber.

But when it comes SD, sentimentality ends there. I may carry a .45, .40 or 9mm in a platform I'm familiar with that carries well.

338 lapua, still waiting for a handgun shooting it though ;)

In all honesty: 5.7x28mm but due to restrictions I've got to go with 9x19mm

My favorite's:

In auto's .45 acp

In revolvers .357 mag.

Don't worry 5.7x28mm isn't anything special anyway. 9mm AP can defeat the same body armor and 9mm has better ballistics against non armored targets anyway. The only advantige 5.7 has over 9mm is lower recoil and slightly increased capacity in a similar sized gun.

Maybe 9mm AP ammo goes trough the same as regular 5.7mm ammo, but AP is restricted... 5.7mm has lower recoil, better range and better body penetration, while tumbling can easily make the same wounds as expansion (look at 5.45x39mm). If I could buy a Five-seveN, I'd use it for SD without hesitation! (would prefer a rifle though...)

Well I don't advocate useing any AP ammo for self defence. But a 9mm hollow point with out preforme the 5.7 by a significant margin. Tumbleing cannot be relied appon. 99% of the time the bullet will simply zip through the target without any tumble or yaw. Remember that 99.% of self defence shootings happen at less than 10 yards.

In a full auto carbine where you can quickly put multiple shoots on target the 5.7 has some merit. But in a pistol it is less "capable" than other calibers.

Tie between .45ACP and 12 ga.

If I could have unlimited ammo of 1 round for the rest of my life for free it would be 12 ga. for sure :)
