What's the NRA doing for CCW?

I'm in California. I don't want to carry all the time, but I'd like to do it occasionally without committing a felony. Does anyone know what lobbyist groups are doing to aid CCW? Is it the NRA? Are there others?

Side question - What is the most important legal issue for gun owners that lawmakers need to address?

Not quite where I was going with this, but I'll play...

Because it should be my right. How I exercise my rights is my business.

You are 100% correct!

Yet also incorrect... You do not have the right to carry...

If you did, you could carry whenever you want, youre right..

But what is the point?
You cannot possibly see the future and know when you will be attacked...

It's like wearing your seatbelt, you can be the safest driver on the road... but ya never know about the next guy, your tires, brakes, or anything else you have no control over.

Mike...

Right now? Nothing.

I'm trying to figure out which direction the discussion is going. Trying to get a big picture because I'm new to this issue. I was hoping to get some insight from other Californians as well as those In Michigan, who have gone through this.

Who do you contact in your state?

What arguments have helped in the past?

For example, from 1 to 10, how close is California legislature to passing CCW?

Does anyone know state reps who are for it? Are we better off with Arnold?

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks

The NRA is working at changing the states it has a chance in one at a time. WI is the big one they are focussing on now. The chances of laws being changed on a state level in NY, NJ, IL and CA are next to zero.

The best thing that can be done is for Alito to get to the bench. With him there the balance of power will finally tilt to the side of the originalists/constructionists and we will ahve a chance to get the 2A coorectly defined by the SCOTUS.

Kesserman,

I see where this is headed. You shouldn't be ridiculed because you want to carry sometimes or because you are just curious of your rights.

Unfortunately you reside in the wrong state. Fellow Californian's of yours in San Francisco have just approved a ban on all handguns within city limits. It appears there is a move in the wrong direction on the West Coast. Fortunately, the NRA is fighting like Hell to ensure that right isn’t taken away. I would imagine that the State Supreme Court would also see how this is completely illegal. Your best bet is to start with your state legislators and lobbyists (which could include the NRA). The right to possess concealed weapons is governed by the individual states. You might want to get involved with gun clubs/organizations within your community and region. This will help you know what the “hot button” issues are in your state, keep you aware of any upcoming or pending legislature, and provide you the opportunity to fight for your own rights. The NRA is also a good start. If you are not a member I would recommend joining. They do a lot to ensure American Citizens retain what little rights we have left when it comes to firearms. I know the NRA is active in all states, but probably more so within the Beltway in Washington.

The ability to carry concealed is indeed a two part effort, (state and national); especially if you have state politicians hoping to make it to D.C. They are willing to do whatever it takes to please those in their state and the “Big Whigs” within the Beltway.

why carry at all, if youre not going to carry all the time? or atleast most of the time...

Why carry all the time, or most of the time...explain this to me.

"For example, from 1 to 10, how close is California legislature to passing CCW?"

In California, there is no 1 to 10 on CCW; there is only zero. To use a cliche, a snowball in Hell has a better chance. Please help by joining the California Rifle and Pistol Association:

Frankly, when it comes to gun rights, California has much bigger fish to fry than concealed carry, and I would prefer that lobbyists put their efforts into areas where they can do more good.

Yikes....

Been poking around voting records. This is disturbing.

How can a state as large as California be so one sided on these issues?

Having moved from CA to Idaho in August and having looked into CCW issues in CA I found out a few things.
The local city/county can determine it's own CCW parameters and if they will issue them or not. Isleton is one municipality in Northern CA that for a period of 4 years issued permits to anyone that could pass a background check. Generally however, things in CA are moving in the opposite direction.
I for one carried illegally from time to time in CA because my travels sometimes took me into areas that were crime ridden,.. the violent kind. Like the saying goes, "Be judged by 12 or carried by 6". Besides, it is not a felony to carry a weapon if you are not a convicted felon. In most jurisdictions it is a misdemeanor. In any event, when it comes down to personal saftey, I would carry.
Unless you look like someone who may have spent some time bending the laws and do things that draw attention to you either on the street or in your vehicle, no one is likely to ask if you are packing or to search you.

By the way, in Idaho, unless the county sheriff can find a reason to not issue a ccw card, (felony conviction, domestic violence conviction etc.) the state requires that you be issued the permit withing 90 days of application. Mine took 28 days.

"Besides, it is not a felony to carry a weapon if you are not a convicted felon. "

In California, I believe it *is* a felony to carry an unregistered handgun concealed. I don't know if it has to be registered to you.

Tim

In California, unregistered concealed carry of a handgun which is registered to the person carrying it, is a misdemeanor for the 1st offense as long as there are no prior felony convictions against the offender.

Change any of the elements and it becomes a felony.

Every pro gun person should:

1) vote in every election for pro gun candidates
2) write your representatives expressing your views on gun issues
3) join state and national pro gun groups
4) give as much money as you can to pro gun groups
5) write pro gun letters to the editor to your local papers
6) respond to inacurrate media depictions of guns
7) educate your family and friends on current pro gun topics
8) challenge anyone who challenges your gun rights
9) attend all pro gun rallies and conferences in your area
10) obtain non resident CCW licenses to support these CCW states

There's something like 40,000 legal permit holders in CA.

There are zero legal permit holders in WI.

The chances of the NRA getting shall-issue in CA are slim to none.

The chances of the NRA getting shall-issue in WI are about 50-50.

If you controlled the purse-strings, where would you focus your efforts?
