Whats the best hollow point?

There probably is no one "Best." I'm partial to Winchester Silvertips in my .38 or .357, but you have to figure out whichever works best for you. A few bucks and a little range time, and I'm sure you'll find the right one for YOU!

Try the Ranger T instead of the Ranger SXT. They are LEO only but they come in 50 round boxes and have been lab tested and have a good reputation in the field. The Ranger Ts have a completely different bullet design than the SXT, they just look the same. You can pretty much only buy them online though as they are LEO only.

In the end thats just my preference, any of the 5 or 6 top bullet designs is going to work as well as the other. I know its hard to hear but its the truth. There is no answer to your question, handgun bullets just dont work very well.

Ranger Ts, Ranger Gold Partition, Speer Gold Dots, Hornady XTP, Remington Golden Sabers, Federal HST...just pick one. If you have to use your firearm to defend your life none of these is going to do a better job over the other. No one is going to die with Gold Dots in their firearm and have a loved one say "Why if only Billy Gee had used Ranger Ts he would still be alive today.".

Sorry if I cant answer your question the way you want but if there was a single bullet design that worked better than the others we would all be using it.

Best Round

I Really like the Remington Golden Saber rounds. The design looks like it uses the spin of the bullet to help it open up. EXCEPT that a 1911 .45 and Glock .45 spin the bullet different directions. Glock and H&K .45 have a right hand twist and MOST 1911's have a Left hand twist. The .45 Golden Saber round appears to have been designed for the 1911.

So that particular round would be a good choice in one gun but not another. I could be wrong and have misunderstood the bullet design but that is what you get on the internet. Opinions.

The Best answer I have seen on this post is it depends on your intended use. Ask any bullet company what is the best bullet and they will tell you it is there's and show you convincingly why.

Shot placement is the MOST important aspect. Training. No Magic bullets. Shoot until the threat, stops being a threat. Carry the largest caliber you can hit with. A hand gun is underpowered compaired to a rifle. You are looking for an answer to a question that can't be truely answered. The answer is the best bullet is the one that workED.

I guess I just don't understand this comment. Can you explain?

yeah, the SXT has lead inside. I was reading that federal LE wound article, and on the auto glass / geletain block test the SXT seperated jacket from core in every instance.

Good thing there's no auto glass / geletain barriers in my house. I might have had to reach for the AK.

That's straight comedy right there. And SOOOOOOO true.

Well

How do you buy motor oil? I buy bottles that are green, because I like green. Most people do the same thing, but probably wouldn't admit it. The same people buy hollow points based on similar criteria, like the packaging, the name, how evil it sounds, how evil it looks etc. etc.

If you only had to pick one hollow point, I would pick the Hornady XTP because it is a reliable feeding bullet, that expands but still penetrates. It's kinda like airing on the side of caution. I've used the XTP for deer hunting and they have performed flawlessly. Deer are about as similar as any of us are going to get to testing on people (thankfully). They don't sound evil, they don't look evil, but they do work.

This is the criticism I've been wanting, good discussions, awesome.

Accuracy is as much less of an issue as reliability.(for me) I'm no, shot over the shoulder of the hostage type of guy.
If I'm at a great distance distance that needs a steady shot, i have the distance to run away.

Everyone's suggestions are excellent so far. I like the GoldenSabers; SXT's; HST's; Barnes bullets the all copper hollowpoint; and PowRBall even though i haven't heard any feed back on that. Keep em coming!
Anyone else seen the tracer bullets for handguns. I think i saw them at Sportsman guide (i think)

Tracer bullets? Oh man you don't want to use tracer bullets. They will cauterize the bleeding to help the bad guy and then burn down your house in the bargain!

Depends greatly on caliber and personal preference. These are my choices in the calibers I use (or have used) as a carry gun.

.32ACP/Walther PP-60grn Winchester Silvertips: they are the time tested load for this caliber. Honestly though, I typically use FMJ in such a small caliber

9mm/CZ 75-Cor Bon 125grn JHP: loaded hot and I prefer 125grn weight for 9mm

.357 Magnum/S&W 28 & 66- Anything 140grn or heavier: I've been known to use Remington 158grn JHP, Winchester 145grn Silvertips, and Cor Bon 140grn JHP. I like the heavier weights because they have less flash and blast than 125's

10mm/S&W 1076- 175grn Winchester Silvertips: Only ammo I've got so far that isn't 'FBI Lite' type loadings, I will try Cor Bon, Buffalo Bore, and Double Tap in the future.

.44 Special/Taurus 445- Federal 200grn LSWCHP, Winchester 200grn Silvertip, Blazer 200grn JHP: Basically anything 200grn or heavier. The 165grn Cor Bons seem like a good load, but I want heavy in a big bore and they were downright unpleasant in my Taurus 445 Snub.

.44 Magnum/Ruger Redhawk- Remington 240grn SJHP: this is the only hollowpoints I bothered to buy for this caliber, I very rarely (read once) carry my Ruger Redhawk and this load seemed as good as any.

I use the 45 fed. Hydroshocks. The only testing I don is in milk jugs filled with water at 50 ft. Blew up 3 and only went trough one side of the forth. I don't know how to use a camera yet, But the picture above is the same. I've heard some good press on solid copper from Barnes for reloading. According to the sperts you should carry store bought for defense.
Good luck.
James:)

Baseline answer here, regardless of handgun caliber.

Overall, I'd say a speer gold dot for SD purposes, and the hornady XTP for hunting use.

My opinion only of course, others may differ.

All of these wounds everybody keeps describing sound like knife wounds. Maybe you just need a bayonette for your handgun? He's too far away, shoot. If he gets close enough, just shank the hell out of him.

Look at the Hornady's XTPs...

they were designed from the FBI results after the Miami fiasco.
And they are ACCURATE!!
For 9mm try the 124, 140's for .38Spl ? .357Mag and the 230 for .45
They also make in 9mm & 45, same weight FMJ-FP for good solid practice ammo.
