Whats the best hollow point?

I'm looking for the meanest hollow point round period.
I've used some cheap silver tip 9mm. Ive used Federal Hydrashock in .380; .45; and 9mm. I've also used Winchester Ranger .40cal 155gr. I like the Ranger, it has some kick to it.
What is the best brand period?

I'm leaning towards Remington Golden Sabers, or PowR'Ball. Any opinions would be great!

That is like asking what is the best of anything, period. Depends on the gun and the situation. Might be one kind that is best with your gun, as far as accuracy and expansion with a given barrel. Or most velocity? Or best expansion in soft targets, best penetration and expansion thru barriers, etc. Now there might be some argument about it and some older design ammo might not be as good as even the least of the modern loads, but there is no such thing as one that is the best, or all ammo would look alike due to the pressure of competition in the market. Let others put in their two cents, there is no magic bullet!

I like Remington Golden Sabers, Winchester Rangers, Speer Gold Dots, and Winchester Silvertips. I just buy whatever is available and cheaper at the time. Mainly the Winchester Rangers since a box for 50 usually go from about 15 bucks or so.

Other good brands or so I hear are Federal Hydra-Shock, Cor-bon, Cor-bon DPX, and Hornady TAP.

Depends

Hornady XTPs seem to work well and feed reliably.

They don't look evil, and I think that's why most people seem to forget about them.

best hollow point

My son is in law enforcement, and they are issued Speer Gold Dots for their .40s. Supposed to be very good stuff.

I buy Winchester Silvertips at the gun show because they are reasonably priced. Practice.......practice.......practice......

Hey fattsgalore,

What is your intended purpose for these rounds? Is it self defense loads for the home or rounds for conceal carry? Are you more concerned about penetration or expansion? Are you looking for a self defense bullet or are you looking for a hunting round? Please be a little more specific rather than asking for the best since there might be a best for different scenarios and situations, but rarely a nest for everything.

To answer everyone simply.
One of those one hit quit bullets. The type of bullet that doctors see in the emergency room and scream.
"WHY! WHY!!! GOOD LORD!!! GIVE ME A FRICKIN CHANCE!!!"(not that they don't say that with every patient)

I know... I know... "It not what, but where" with that said.
I just want the most expansive tissue damaging brand of any caliber for all my handguns.
Once again GoldenSaber's and PowR'Ball seem to be the nastiest. Once again, any experience or testing would be appreciated.
And to those who've giving me advice, thank you.

fatts, that does not happen. If you intend to do that, please sell your handguns and look into perhaps getting a sawzooka. It sends explosive 9" saw blades at 2000fps. (doesn't exist either, but may as well shoot for the moon, eh?).

You need to be very aware of any round that exits your gun. You own them all. Get something that has a proven record, feeds well in your gun, and patterns well after that. Become a good shot if you are not already one. If you are, become a better shot, especially under stressful conditions.

By the way, posts like this will be used in evidence against you should you ever have to draw or shoot your weapon. Its best to be informed. Worrying about what the doctor says is irrelevant. Worry about getting out alive with you and yours

I don't know about Speers or Hornaday, but I would whole-heartedly recommend DECAF! That's "Decaffinated Coffee." They sell it at the grocery store, some assembly required.

Just buy a can of it, run it through your coffee maker, and drink it just like you would regular coffee. Once you do, you will realize that most hollow-point bullets out there will perform with about the same level of reliability and predictability as the others. Getting excited about which brand name is "best" is an exercise in opinion and overanalysis.

Decaf, dude. Decaf.

Only a few people have constructive info for me? I'm shocked, and to everyone who has, thank you.

If i want the legality of guns I'll talk to my regularly over priced attorney.

Other then that I want opinion's on the best in the market.
Anyone else don't bother put a thread, please.

What the police carry is often based on price and administrative policy. Like their guns. If there was one best police gun, they would all carry the same thing. I don't think you could go wrong with either brand mentioned, but I also would consider accuracy among other things. If the runner up groups 2 inches at 25 yards and the super expando only does 5 inch groups, most people also lean towards that factor, even if the difference in accuracy is just a mental crutch that gives more confidence you will need. But in a close encounter the accuracy may not be a big factor unless it it wretched and the bullets tumble or something. Or malfunction in your gun. I think you could pick among the top 3 or 4 contenders and then base it on price for practice, all other factors being equal. Remember, alot of the talk and claims are hype designed to get you to buy one brand over another, as well as tiny design differences. One might be identical to another except one has tiny useless teeth on the tip to make it look meaner but in practice make no difference. You are really asking a hard question of brand over general types. Good luck. Maybe what you should do is post a poll with plenty of choices and see what they say, but try to limit it to one or two calibers, as that has an effect that is not insignificant also.

The TAP ammo looks good. It posts some tight groups, feeds reliably in most semis, and is a relatively "hot" round with good velocity and energy. I have not been impressed with any of the silvertips I have fired and subsequently examined. They have not, for me, consistently expanded. Perhaps I am not driving them at sufficient velocities?

SXT.

remember, the biggest, most sharp and jagged projectile causes the most blood loss and tissue disruption.

SXT and .45 ACP.

Well.. he he, you’re right. Looks ARE all that matters here. We generally keep quiet with stuff like facts. Hahaha

Well remember a couple of months ago we all saw the .50 BMG video where the perp got blasted through the chest and didn’t get “knocked back”?

Well if you combine that with all of the first hand testimonials we et from trauma doctors and such, it’s obvious there are only three things that stop the attacker.

A) massive blood loss (takes awhile)
B) severe damage to the central nervous system. (head shot, bullets lodged in spine)
C) shock

I may not be head checker at wal-mart, but I can add 2+2. If ONLY those things are going to put him down, then whaat you need is a deep penetrating, sharp, jagged heavy projectile. The bigger it opens and more jagged the protrusions the better as long as it penetrates deep enough to lodge in the spinal cord after it blows though your heart and lung cavity.

Big, heavy, sharp and deep penetrating will put them down the fastest with the least left to chance.

When you look at it that way .45 auto is the obvious choice (cause .50 is stupid) and the more jagged the projectile the better. Look at the “talons” on that 230 grain.

For my .38 Special. I carry Remington LSWCHP+P 158 gr and Buffalo Bore LSWCHP+P 158 gr for backup

For my 9mm I carry Federal Hydrashok 147 gr.

For my .45 Auto I just carry hardball (it's a large enough caliber afterall)

The best one is the one that is in the chamber of the gun held in your hand when you need it.

Take up needle pointing or knitting and quit reading gun magazines.

I didn't realize that those were not fully jacketed. Looks like exposed lead core on the bottom.

Those SXT's look mean. Thats what I'm talking about!
I was reading that the SXT's are basically BlackTalons without a Teflon coating.

Defiantly on my shopping list.

Constructive advice...

You've recieved allot of sound advice Fatts.

Is there a "BEST"?

It all comes down to what you and the gun in question likes. Some guns don't like certain bullets and have trouble cycling them reliably. Other guns are less accurate due to certain bullet weights and/or construction, and of course barrel twist rates are also involved. The absolute craziest expanding, tissue shreading, deepest penetrating bullet design ever devised won't be worth a damn if it doesn't hit what you aim at.
There are a lot of gimmicks being incooperated into Hollow Point Handgun rounds now and while some may look more impressive than others, in the end most of the top line ammunition all work pretty much the same.

I suggest buying a good selection of different designs and weight rounds for you gun and putting some trigger time in with them to find out what your gun likes.
