Whats in your shotgun for HD?

oh ya before you hammer the birdshot i get alot varments (racoons cats ect) cant see wasing buckshot

Tight neighborhood so I load #4 buckshot. Back-up rounds are 00 and Federal slugs if it gets TOO out of hand. I can fight my way to the shotgun with my G-36.

Winchester 1300 Defender with Fed. Tac 00 - however, this is secondary to the AR-15 with Hornady TAP.

If them zombies keep a coming!! Just kidding, I have the AR with the night sights and Surefire. That's my HD long gun of first choice - not to thread hijack.

Right now I have 7 rounds of Remington Reduced recoil 00 Buck in the tube and 4 rounds of Reduced Recoil or standard 2 3/4 1oz Sluggers on the side saddel. I don't keep one in the chamber because there are others in the house. But once I start reloading I plan on mixing up a batch of 2 3/4 shells with 00 bck and birdshot in the empty voids between the buckshot pellets

What, no birdshot?

8 rounds of 00 in a Mossberg 500 w/20" barrel.

From the above responses, it looks like the buckshot vs birdshot debate is settled.

The #4 doesnt penetrate quite enough for HD, the 00 and 000 a little too much. #1 or #2 would be just right. I haven't gotten around to getting any, so I will make do with 0. More pellets is an advantage, and it penetrates enough, so nothing lost. As for why load buckshot/slug/buckshot/slug as I do, it's because the first shot may be hurried, so a spread is desirable. The second shot will be aimed. The next buckshot round is for an additional threat. If I somehow forget where I'm at in the progression, I doubt I will be the one suffering. I would rather have more rounds, so I don't use magnum loads. Just overkill IMO.

#4 buckshot

It acts like a slug at close range... under 15 feet

Better than 00 at medium range... under 30 feet

Covers more area evenly at long range... over 30 feet

Like hitting with 20+ .22LR's at the same time...
