Whats in your shotgun for HD?

Some of you would go alternating between shot and slug, etc. Why?
People carry slugs as well as shot due the extended range and increased accuracy of slugs vs the close range power of shot. Varing slugs to shot is a bad IMHO because you will forget which shell you have chambered in the heat of the moment, and you do not want to waste ammo.

Whatever's laying around

I guess I buck the "Buck" trend. 2 3/4" 3-Dram Trap Loads with 1 1/4 oz of 7 1/2s are cheap and plentiful. The house is 45 feet long and 22 feet wide. The longest straight-line distance is 26 feet. At that range, with full choke, I'm still going to punch a baseball-sized hole in Mr. Dumbass. And don't talk to me about Bad Guys with body armor. They don't wear it. If they did, the blast would fold them in half and my follow-up shot would turn their heads to mush. That's just me, though. I try to let inertia and pellet count do the dirty work.;)

home defense

Since we are in the subject, I looked at 1300 defender this week with the extended plug, and also a Mossberg shorty with the extended plug and a Remington, and I was wondering what ya'll think think about it doubling as a duck gun too. Any preferences? I'd use 00 buck the first round too, and then it would be slugs, baby.

I hunt ducks, and HD guns in the blind make me nervous. That short barrel is hard to lean against the edge of the blind and if it slips, things will get exciting fast. The short barrel may make the gun whippier than you need, whereas a good 26" barrel will swing more smoothly on those evil canards. And on ducks, I use steel #4's followed by more #4's. That's good Duck Defense.

I don't know about ducks, but I have no problem shooting trap/skeet with my 18in 870.
True, barrel length is a matter of preference, as is shot size on Bad Guys. I just don't like to see a gun that's too short to fit in the notch on the front edge of the blind. Makes me nervous, is all.
Back to the thread, I'd have no problem racking in a 3" Duck or Goose load for HD. Like I say, at the typical HD distance, IMO almost any shotshell will do the job.

Well, birdshot tends to leave messy but very shallow wounds, insufficient to stop a determined BG. Case in point, our VPs recent accident where he gave a face full of birdshot to an 80 year old man who is now recovering well.

Turkeys and Waterfowl shot on BGs

I don't know, Buckster. I haven't hunted a turkey yet, but there should be plenty of good advice here and elsewhere about that.

Blackwater, I'm not sure about shooting humans since I haven't done that either. I do know that my waterfowl shells are higher-velocity than the upland ones. Also our poor Veep shot that lawyer with a 28 gauge quail load which has different ballistic characteristics than 12 gauge waterfowl loads.
I figure if the fool tries to get back up, hit him again (unless you're Cheney -let the Secret Service handle that!). The same applies for a gun, a bat or a rock. Keep at it till he stops moving. That's my philosophy.

While I think the point is valid about birdshot vs. buckshot, the case in point isn't very apropos HD. Afterall, the victim was 30 yards away, and the gun was 28 gauge.

1st two rounds in my 870 are AA #8 skeet loads, followed by 4 rounds of Fed reduced recoil 00 buck. 5 slugs in side saddle.

Do you belive everything the government tells you?

You are being funny, right? Actually, it is worse than that. This "fact" comes from the press, and frankly I'm less inclined to believe anything coming from the press than I am something coming from the gummit. I do take all things with a healthy dose of skepticism. In this case, though, most of the spin contending that the distance was less than 30 yards is coming from the left. I'm not inclined to believe anything coming in from that direction.

Nobody is disputing the gauge, however. So really, whatever the actual distance, the Cheney shooting isn't really on point for the issue under discussion.

Would you all recommend getting a sidesaddle? Or would shoving a few rounds in my pocket or strapping on my belt w/ ammo pouch be sufficient?

5 shells with 3 inch T steel shot.
They are just a tiny tad smaller than # 4 buckshot, and have a much greater pellet count.

45 acp colt double eagle oh wait shotgun model 12 12ga 18" riot barrel with 6 rounds 1st 71/2 bird (reload) all the rest buckshot
