whats a good 9mm anti black bear round?

go withthe heaviest hard cast flat nose round....also save a bullet for yourself b/c your gonna need it.... also why the hell do you even own a 44 if your not gonna put it to good use??

"Spray his face with 15 of those"

That says it all. You are severely disallusioned if you think you can get off 15 rounds into a charging bears face.

Even if you decided to stay with Glock and something like the 19 or smaller, there are several similarly sized models that carry a more potent round -

G23 - 13 rounds of .40S&W
G27 - 9 rounds of .40S&W (considerably smaller)
G30 - 10 rounds of .45ACP (smaller but a little heavier)
G32 - 13 rounds of .357Sig
G29 - 10 rounds of 10mm (smaller but a little heavier)

I would think any of these would be potentially better defense against a bear. Even if you have to carry something heavier, I bet there's something else you could do to otherwise your weight load.

I've only run into a black bear twice. Both times they shot off in the other direction without so much as throwing a glace my way. I'm going to assume that these were bears that were used to people because both times it was just off major hiking paths (no deep woods free lance walking).

Could you run into a bear malicious enough to want to attack you? Yes, it's possible. However, most critters aren't looking for a fight. It's a hell of a lot easier for a bear to crack open a couple turtles than it is for him to attack and bring down a man. They usually attack out of desperation from lack of food, territory (or cubs), and if they feel cornered or threatened with no place to go except THROUGH you.

I would bet my life on bear spray over a hand gun of any caliber. I know that I would be much more apt in a fight or flight situation to grab a can of spray, spray a ton of the stuff in a wide arc, and scream my head off. Is it foolproof? Not really, but nothing is when you run into a bear that requires going toe to paw.

If it's black bear, you're probably taller than it (which helps with intimidation), screaming can startle a bear even if it's attacking (they aren't used to prey animals hollering back at them), bears have an olfactory that is said to be one of the most sensitive in the animal kingdom. Unless you get a shot right through all that muscle, fat, and bone into its heart or CNS, they are probably going to react more strongly and more quickly to a face full of "mace" over some glancing blows that MAY kill them an couple hours or days after they have killed you.

Personally, I'd be much more scared of the ornery bores and two legged critters. If weight is an issue, I would stick with the glock and some spray. Personally, I shoot 9mm much better than I shoot the bigger bore hand cannons. So, hard heavy fmj, and hope you don't need 'em. Keeping your shots on target under that kind of stress (and who can really train for something like that) is going to be more important than the caliber you hit them with. I know I would rather have more firepower than 6 shots.

lets keep in mind im talking about black bears/cougars. not grizzly bears or godzilla. this is why im thinking those flat nose +p+ 9mm would at least change his mind while i spray his face with 15 of those.
keep another thing in mind though: If none of those bullets penetrate the target, you might as well have just used a stick.. Use the appropriate weapon, or just get some bear spray. better yet, you should get the bear spray even if you have a weapon, one cannot have too many choices:)..

Try a .357 sig in the same style glock that you already have maybe? or even a 10mm?

Forgive me, but politely ask the bear to open....

Forgive me, but politely ask the bear to open his mouth real wide and say "Ahhhhh" Use your 9mm as a tongue depressor and keep firing the pistol in the back of the bear's mouth until he is no longer a threat. Simple...

I would carry a 44mag and still try my best to avoid any confrontation with a bear or any other critter bigger and meaner than me....... Lemmon

whats a good 9mm anti black bear round?
Don't believe there is one.
shortwave believes correctly. The truthful answer is there is no good 9mm round for any adult bear, save the Sun Bear. Any loading of that cartridge that you choose will have a much higher likelihood of failing than succeeding when put to use. The .44 Magnum is heavy, but could actually be effective if you scored the right hits. The Glock would more or less serve as a superstitious talisman; giving you emotional comfort without any likely functional benefit. It, then, becomes more of an extraneous burden than the .44 Mag.
not sold on bear spray plus if it has weight to it im not interested.
First: Get sold on bear spray. The bad news for gunnies like us is that bear spray is statistically far, far more effective at stopping bear attacks than firearms. This sucks to hear, I know. Firearms are cool. We love them. Unfortunately they are not always the best tool for the job, even when that job is defending against dangerous animals. However, while we may not like this reality, it is a reality we are powerless to change. So, we must accept it. The good news? Bear spray works, and is as commercially available as guns and ammo.

Second: If bears are the concern, and pepper spray does work better than even your .44 Magnum (and it does), than the spray need not be an extra burden, because you can make it your only burden. Leave the Glock in the truck; it's very close to useless to you anyway.

9MM for bear. Learn to run real fast down hill.Bears can't run down hill fast. With a 9mm i think you will just **** him off. Sorry, but not the gun for bears.

I would advise running away a better course of action than spraying EXCEEDINGLY low-caliber rounds into a hunk of meat, fur, and muscle. Stick with the .44 or buy a can of bear spray.

Lions and bears and boars, oh my!... OK...I don't have any experience with boars, but christ!?... You're worried about being attacked by a black bear? Have you ever even seen a black bear in the wild? They're pretty shy. I don't know about mtn lions in your neck of the woods either, but I've spent a few years 'out west' in the mountains and grew up in the 'east' around bears and the only thing that worries me is maybe a crazy two-legged predator invading my camp. Buck up!...You don't need to be worried about everything that makes noise in the middle of the night. Nature isn't a big inner city. Where does this fear come from? Do you ever get out of the city? Again, I admit I don't know how the lions are where you're at, but, c'mon...black bears??? I'd be more afraid of a dead battery in my vehicle after a long day's hike. (and the mean two-legged predators)

Thank you for the links--good (albeit dry) reading. Taking the info at face value (and I have no reason to do otherwise) I am sold.

Make sure you have someone along who you can out run. Popping any bear w/ 9mm is only going to tick it off.

9mm

My wife and I go back country backpacking for 1-2 weeks at stretch and we always carry bear spray, Glock 19, and a black plastic bag. When we went camping on the Sheltoi Trace (not sure if that's spelled correctly) we checked with the Rangers before we made the trip. The Rangers said the black plastic bag rustling in your hands scared the bears because it is not a normal sound in the woods. The black bag being the lightest option, then the bear spray being next for lighter weight. Lat the Glock19. I carry the Glock more for personal protection from 2 legged critters we may come across. I use Federal 124gr. Hydra Shocks in the Glock.

For those that say 9mm sucks. You made need a bigger round to make up for other small things, but I say shot placement rules! as with most things in life. . . is not about size, but what you can do with it.;)
