first of all i have to walk over a mile in the mucky swamp in south louisiana for my job sometimes. its horrible ok. beyond description. every ounce i carry hurts.

i was carrying a s&w .44 mag and i agree 100% its better than a 9mm for black bear. i can't afford to buy new guns. i have that heavy .44 mag and a glock 19.

fact is im going to carry the glock 19. now what i need is help finding the most powerful, heavy, solid round in 9mm that might penetrate a black bear scull.

yes black bears are showing up more and more in south louisiana. i spend lots of time in the swamp/bayous and i have seen a cougar. i have heard them twice at night at the camp.

not sold on bear spray plus if it has weight to it im not interested. i have to carry a gun and its gonna be a glock 19 with a 15 round mag. nothing more.

yes i would consider buying a compact glock in 10mm but thats future. today i need a good powerful 9mm round.

9 x 57 Mauser

Light recoiling, very popular at the turn of last century for Lion, Leopard, Wildebeest, Boar etc.

All kidding aside, I carry oleoresin capsicum spray in the strongest formulation I can get and in the largest size I can get (10 oz can). I have never had to use it, but over the past 15 years or so it has a good track record (along with the newer UDAP spray). I also carry a 454 Casull.

So much for non-responsive answers.

You might try doing research on the "Punch Bullets". Very solid, very hard, designed to penetrate hard materials like bear skulls and heavy muscle.

Pay close attention to nose shape and overall length. What feeds well in a semi-automatic may have a tendency to deflect when it hits a bear's sloping skull. Of course, if a great penetrator won't feed, you have a single-shot.

Good luck.

I would say climbing a tree, but that won't help you with bears.

I wouldn't depend on 9mm in bear country. That's .41 Mag and up.

You will need the depleted uranium 9mm round, if you can get it go for the rocket assisted depleted uranium 9mm round.... :D 9mm for bear defense, not a very good choice IMHO... Use it if that all you have and the situation warrants it but its really too little a pistol and round for too big a game.

That Glock is going to be nice and comfortable until you need it. Seriously though, HOW MANY TIMES DOES THIS HAVE TO BE DISCUSSED!!!

Fellas,

Its his life, his choices, hes a grown man. He knowes the 9 aint a good round, but hes made a decision and thats clear. Best we can do is give the best advice to his question of heavy and hot 9mm round.

Could you trade the Glock for another gun? Are are you carrying it strictly due to weight? I wouldnt feel comfortable with 9mm, even in +p+ for Bear, even with my 357 mag I would be pretty uncomfortable...regardless of whether you find the most powerfull 9mm available, you may be kidding yourself if you think it may be powefull enough to stop a bear:eek:

Take a look at Double Tap's 9mm+P 147gr FMJ Flat Point.

From thier web site...
"This is the deepest penetrating load ever offered in 9mm! This is THE load for the woods in 9mm. The flat point helps to cut rather than move around hard objects such as bone. The tough brass jacket on the bullet helps it to keep its shape. A great backup for hunting, camping, and hiking!"
I think "backup" would be the key word here..As in if you run out of 44 mags, you need to pull the 9mm with the double taps to finish the job..thats if you were lucky and skilled enough to to damage with the big gun...if you are using a handgun against a black bear, you are probably going to be highly excited, and your shot placement may not be what you expect. If I were you, I would be definitely be considdering changing my options. Or just carrying the 44 and dealing with it. Good luck, I hope you get the upper hand on those furry mofo's

yes i will be shopping for another bear gun. im leaning toward the compact glock 10mm or even the small ruger .357 mag. depends if they have those at the gunshow and are willing to trade for my s&w .44 mag.

lets keep in mind im talking about black bears/cougars. not grizzly bears or godzilla. this is why im thinking those flat nose +p+ 9mm would at least change his mind while i spray his face with 15 of those.

I've worked and played in the woods my whole life, and while we've run into black bears from time to time (and lots of other critters, of all sizes), none were ever a bother, and usually haulin ass in the other direction.

Now the squirrel that missed its limb in a jump from tree to tree, that lands a couple of feet from you, THATS a scary thing. For all involved. :)

Oh, and forget about the snakes too. Contrary to what youre always told, they aint just waiting there for you to come along so's they can bite you.

Why is it when someone has a gun along, they think all the critters in the forest are after them? :D

I tend to agree with everyone here that due to the mass of a black bear the most suitable would be the 41 mag or larger. My trail gun is a Smith 329PD and I have never even to had fire a warning shot.

But, if you should be so unlucky to encounter a Black bear that actually attacks you, You should the play the lottery that day, only 24 people were ever killed by black bears from 1900 to 2008 and the number of bears acting aggressively toward people are at a little over 2,300 for the same period. This normally happens in National parks or camping areas where humans are feeding bears leftovers or leaving their food trash behind.

Of all of the bears I have encountered over the years and even last week, have all been more timid than myself.

The vast majority of these attacks were in the Smokey Mountians and out West. So, I wouldn't let it bother you too much.

not far from where i live and work in the swamp is patterson, la. a hot spot for black bear. last summer one came to my home town, hit by a car. another was found near walker, la. both from patterson. they are here and roaming around.

we have cougars also. plus the wild bore population is booming, i guess this is the one i am most likely to be attacked by.

Bear spray will run off bears 10x better than shooting them. The spray is also lighter than a gun, by far. You will also have much less trouble with the wardens spraying than shooting. Around here, if you don't have bite marks they assume you were poaching.

If you have worries about bears AND 2 legged critters, then pack in the 9mm AND the spray.
