What would ever possess someone to buy a Hi-Point or Jennings ??

I've never owned a HiPoint so I don't know anything about them. In short, why is it so unsafe to carry them with a round in the chamber? I'm a firm believer in saving for guns to buy quality. My first handgun was a Sig 228...I bought it when I was 15. (Well technically my Dad did but I put up the funds for the purchase ;) )

Cornbread2 - Don't forget about the surplus CZ-70s. In .32, and you can get them for $80.

I like to have some elegance and grace in my weapons. It's an aesthetic thing rather than a strictly practical thing. I make purchases based on both mechanics funtionality and "personality". Hi-Points and their cousins may function decently, but to me they are the polar opposite of elegance.

I own many guns sig glock colt ect . I bought a Hipoint carbine used with 100 rounds of corbons for 100 dollors . It eats everything I fed it . NO I wouldnt carry it loaded or depend on it for home defence but it is a fun plinker . If someone wants to purchase one I dont see anything wrong with it as long as they are careful on how they handle the gun and dont carry it loaded . And were your saftey glasses when shooting this firearm .

Kick it down a notch....

I guess saying someone's gun is a POS is a lot like saying his kid is ugly. That said, there are a lot of ugly kids in the world, even if their parents don't realize it. My point? Don't take it personally.

Just because someone identifies as a POS a gun that you own, borrowed, shot once at the range, like, lust after, oiled and buffed, got as a gift from your father/mother/sister/brother/ uncle/cousin, have had for years, cycled thousands of rounds through, stole, traded, bartered, sold your soul for, hung a poster on your wall of, learned how to shoot with, passed down to your next of kin -- doesn't mean it's time to put on your fire-resistant Underoos and start flaming.

Just because you came in contact with said gun in one of the above ways does not necessarily make you a moron, dipsh*t, no-brains, know-nothing rube, pencil-neck geek, boner, butt-head, simpleton, sh*thead, nadless, dongless, assless idiot (minus the savant). It just makes you more likely to be one of the above. So chill.

Don't give me this gun owners' solidarity crap, either, where you can't call ANY firearm a POS for fear that it somehow empowers the guys in black helicopters who are waiting to swoop in and take all your toys away. Let's all just sing Kumbaya and chant MOLON LABE together, shall we? :barf: Just because all guns are mechanical devices that sometimes fail doesn't mean all guns are created equal. You got goodies and baddies like anything else, and if someone wants to call yours a baddie (and can back it up), I say more power to 'em!

So you say that Glocks are "drastic plastic," go kaBoom and are so ugly that their own mothers don't love them, eh? I say right on! Oh, 1911's have the dubious distinction of being unreliable, archaic AND over-priced, you say? I say tell me more! P99's are jam-o-matics? Hmmm, could be. Beretta's slides crack? Possible. HK's shoot backwards?! Sounds dangerous.

Did it ever occur to some of you that some of us (like me) lack direct firearm knowledge and are here to find out exactly which guns suck and which ones don't? If Hi-Points and Jennings suck, I want to know about it BEFORE I put my money on the counter, not after. I've never seen a Jennings, but I checked out the Points on their site, and they LOOK like they're POS's. I know that sometimes looks can be deceiving, but they're rarely that deceiving.

So if someone calls your favorite gun a POS, , just take a few deep breaths and calm down before you post. That person might just be right, and you could take it as a warning and trade up instead of just flaming.

Can't we all just get along? :)

Handled a Hi Point for the first time at the local shop. IMHO it was a POS. It had a tiny little notch for the slidestop and the slide release would not fit into the notch! Now this was a gun NIB at the shop! The slide would not go unto battery unless one FORCED the slide release down. The gun sounded like a BB gun when the slide actually went into battery. It cost $125, I'd rather buy a good knife for $80.

if you can't afford a better quality gun, then wait and save up till you can. Risking ones own personal safety to save a few bucks isn't worth it.

Especially when something like a CZ-75 can be had for $300 new.

Someone once said the purpose of a Highpoint was home defence for those that can not afford something better.

The idea was leave the mag loaded and the chamber empty so it would be safe.

I assume that this could work but still why the Highpoint and why a pistol? If they insist on a Highpoint the carbine would be much better.

The average person buying a cheap pistol for this purpose will not shoot it enough to become good with it. The fact that the Highpoint is a awkward clumsy bluky pistol with a terrible trigger and poor sights makes it harder for anyone to shoot it well.

I know several people that have bought guns like this for home defense and have never even fired them.

Will these people be able to stop an intruder with a pistol that they can not shoot? I don't think so. It most likely wind up taken away from them after it runs dry or jams by the goon that they missed. He will not be in a good mood after his attempted murder and may tend to get a little angry.

He will leave the home with his new Highpoint that was only fired twice and droped once after doing very bad things to the family.

It seems to me that someone like this would be better off with any kind of firearm than a junk handgun.

If I were in that position I would find a good used Mossberg pump shotgun. They can be bought for what you can buy a Highpoint for.

Even a Ruger 10-22 makes more sense to me than a junk handgun.

A person without a lot of firearm experience can always shoot a long gun better than a handgun. I even know people that have been shooting handguns for years that still can not hit the side of a barn even if they were in it.

Even a cheap single shot shotgun would be better than a junk handgun.

Wow!!....

I have never seen a thread like this one with such angry comments about a "cheap" gun, or what's worse, blasting each other's opinons. Chill out people with the "cheap shots" No gun is worth all that!!! Please be safe.

You KNow What

With all the inexspensive handguns I am really surprised at all the hits the Hi-Point trhreads always get.
I dont carry mine in Condition 1 just because of the safety not being there on the guns and I do shoot mine practise every week, being lucky enough to live in the country and not have to go too the range every time.
As for self defense the weapon has proven its wealth too me.

But yes being new too the handgun world I am already looking at some new guns, when you get the fever..........

Thanks everyone for you help.

(Best impression of a sing song voice) La la la... Here I go. I'm passing out the fire retardant now. La la la... Stomping on the flames. La di da... (End sing song voice)

I think the latin name for this thread would be Flamicus Maximus. This severe condition must be treated with a liberal application of, STOP THAT!

Even though none of these weapons would be in my choices as a home defense weapon these days, there was a day when I was a buck private in the Army with a newly acquired wife. $70 was a lot to spend on a handgun to protect the family. It's now nearly 15 years later and from what I learned about that pistol back then I would never recommend one to anyone.

Yet still, even with all the problems associated with the pistols they do hold a place for those who simply cannot afford better and don't have the knowledge that there are other types of weapons out there that can be had for a reasonable price.

What can we do about them? Absolutely nothing except inform our freinds that there are better choices out there. Would I dare get on the bandwagon to even consider banning them? No. That goes against the very principle of our freedom to own weapons. We already have Local, State and the Federal Govt attempting to make guns either impossible to own or making gun ownership a financial challenge. Anyway..off the soapbox.

I will make an exception for the Hi Point Carbines. I've heard very favorable impressions from numerous sources that attest to the robustness of these weapons.

Good Shooting

My parents gave me a .22 revolver when I left home. We were a pretty poor family and they had to pinch pennies to get by so this act was an act of love. It got stolen when I went back to school. Mom got me a cheap .25 auto after that cause they didn't want their little girl to get hurt in the big city. They were getting up in years by then and pretty much living in poverty, but they never acted like it cause they came from the generation that made this country great, as opposed to my generation, the one thats sending this country down the toilet (I'm ashamed but it's true, we all know it). I have many more guns now but I still like that little gun cause mom gave it to me. It was small and could fit in my purse, I would never have to leave it in my car to get stolen. I know that supposably most of those cheap guns are used by gangbangers to commit crimes, at least thats what "they" say. When I think about cheap guns I can't help but wonder how many poor or elderly people rely on those guns for their protection and how they would have nothing if they weren't available. Yeah, they should know better, only ignorant people would get "those" kind of guns. Mom and Dad weren't the smartest people on the block but I remember them doing the best they could given their circumstances, these days people whine like babies for being in the same situation.
Some people are down on their luck and can't afford much more and don't know any better. If mom and dad were alive today they would really love my gun collection and would be proud I was able to afford it.

Until someone can give me a VALID reason to not own a Hi-Point,i'll continue to shoot mine.I don't carry any gun with a round chambered so its a moot point.Nobody ever screamed at S&W for making a gun with cast parts!:p

Never had a Jennings. I had a Hi-Point 9mm compact. It was the only gun I ever abandoned. It is buried somewhere in the Southwestern Sonoran desert. I had no problems with it except that I couldn't get through a mag without it jamming. Hollowpiont or ball, it made no difference. Did it with all the mags, including the new ones I bought to find out if it was a mag problem!!! The dealer would not take returns. Said it was not worth his time. (the gun cost $99 on sale) Sorry Tropical Z, I AM a Hi-Point basher who HAS had extensive experience with the firearm!!!! If yours works, fine and dandy. More power to you. Maybe I just got the "lemon" out of that particular production run, but I think not!!!! ;)

Be Safe Bub!!!! :D

I got a Hi-Point 995 9mm carbine "police package" for x-mas from the in-laws w/red-dot scope, laser and compensator. So far over 600 rounds and never jammed. Just mounted a 4-16X 50mm scope on it, and it shoots 5 124gr+P Gold Dots into 1 ragged hole at 50 yards. It's going turkey hunting. Really good weapon. I can't speak for the pistols, but the carbine's an ace.

The levels of intolerance I've seen in this thread make me sick. If you don't like someone else's taste in guns, fine. Shut up about it.

Answering someone's question with your opinion is not intolerance. If you feel sick turn off the internet and use the bathroom.:barf:
