What was your first powder...

I was given a .22 as a gift in 1958 when I was 8 years old. I began hand loading in 1972 when I returned from Vietnam. Having trained with the M14, I developed a liking to the .308 Winchester cartridge. First powder was IMR 4895 followed by IMR 4064. Eventually I got a SA M1A and a Colt SP1 and was loading .308 Win and .223 Rem. Over the years the cartridges grew which I loaded for. Today, all the years later, IMR 4895 is still one of my favorite powders.

I started with a Lee Hand loader and IMR 3031 to reload for my No.4 Mk1 Sporter. That quickly moved into a single stage press which I still use.

In 1983 started out with HP38 loading for 38 special. Don't Remember the load but shot a lot of them in a Ruger Security Six.

Started loading for a Winchester model 70 in 30.06...used IMR 4064 in 1969. Now I use the same powder in my .375 H&H model 70 and my .243 Remington model 600 carbine. Tried others...no reason to switch.

First was due to shooting in trap league.
Red Dot in trap loads.

Later, first metalic loading- WSF for H&K's/Colt's 9mm and 45acp and a dabbling in 12ga. buckshot loads.

Alliant 2400 for .44 magnum sixgun, using a Lyman turret with a manual primer feed mechanism.
The height of technology at the time.
No way I could afford to shoot the thing otherwise.

June 4th, 1984. The first round I loaded was for 38 Special - 3.8 grains of Bullseye, under a Speer swaged 158gn RN.

I had 4 guns at the time: Python 6"; 686 8-3/8"; 629 8-3/8"; & 60 1-7/8" (all purchased new less than a year before).

I quickly moved to 357 and 44 Mag with Blue Dot. I had more courage than common sense back then and I'm lucky I never blew up a gun. With dumb luck, I moved to the far more forgiving W296 (when loaded hot, yada yada yada, and all that) shortly thereafter. Moving forward, all my magnum loads were with W296.

October that year, I bought a 'Series 80' Colt 1911 and stated loading 45 ACP. That's when I decided to try W231 and have never been without at least some quantity of W231 (or HP-38) since. It's the best pistol powder ever.

Goex fffg, used in a 45 cal. back around 1960.

Second was Green Dot, after that it went to hell in a handbasket. Now, prolly got more different powders than a Bass Pro Shop.

I get your point.

For at least the last two years, my personal inventory of pistol powder exceeds that of any local gun shop I've visited - by a big margin.

H110 sometime in the mid to late 1990's for 44 mag. Went on to other powders and haven't really been back to H110.
