What rifle would you grab first?

NONSENSE!

While this is a great thread, don't forget the reality:

1) China, perhaps, has 90-100,000 troops who could be deployed rapidly, by using plane(30,000 troops) and boats (very lenghty, and only 60,000 at a time). So, their deployable forces on foreign soil, are a paultry figure, one easily dispensed by our forces.

2) We would have complete air superiority.

3) They would have a hard time getting their troops here, with our navy and air force bombing their boats, and shooting down their planes.

4) Lest we forget, their technology, and army, are inferior to ours. Their military is no better than that of Syria, or Iraq.

Oh, so you don't think I'm a spoil sport, I'd take a Glock 17, and a Winchester 94 with a scope.

Sadly, I only have one rifle that I could count on right now, my AK. My FAL, though pretty (you can see it at http://www.shootiniron.com it's the green and black one), is just back from a refinishing and a new replacement receiver from Entreprise. I'm running the gas system at 3.5 now, and it has been reliable for me, but a friend was getting some jams when it was set to 4...hence the 3.5 setting. I expect it to break in in the next month. My AR hasn't been built yet, and would need reliability testing after that anyway, so alas, the only one that I'd trust is the AK.

Well, I'm here on the pacific coast, so I suppose I'd have most luck sitting in the hills and trying to pick them off as they landed.. so a bolt action of some sort, my Savage 30/06 I guess.

But I'd much rather have a tripod mounted M2..

I hope they bring correct change for the Illinois tollway or else supplies will dwindle waiting for them to cross into wisconsin roads one car at a time. I would want M1a's and Hk91's and Ak's and maybe 20 mags for each and a couple thousand rounds for each. I can borrow a BELL 206-B from work so the recon will be fun.

IronBalls - your story about "...dropping those double XXL condoms around to demoralize them..." reminds me of one I heard from WWII. According to this report, the British had developed a very large condom to slip over the entire barrel of their Sten guns for waterproofing. The discarded condoms probably kept the Germans guessing...

As sick as I got from some bad Sweet & Sour Pork the other day at a Chinese buffet, I think I'd get a large order to go, and a bunch of chopsticks...

Oh, wait, if the People's Republic of Kalifornia is the front line, wouldn't they just get disgusted with Feinstein, Davis, Boxer, Willie Brown, Jackie Speir, Bustamante, Lockyer, Perata, Scott, and the rest of their ilk? I can just see Perata and Lockyer railing at the ChiComs for importing illegal assault weapons.

But I'd grab either my SLR-95 or M14NM, if it came as far East as Florida.

Of course the correct answer is your Naval Rail Gun. :-)

But like the rebels in Mexico, I'd take my Ruger 10/22, and head for the hills. One of the stories I read, A rebel was up in the trees with a scoped .22 rifle, and subsonic rounds. Took out 39 of the mexican soldiers. Plink, in the eyeball. One goes down, another looks in his direction, plink, another shot in the eyeball... Hmm, I can probably (in a vest) carry a decent 2000 rounds of .22 without too much problem. A Ruger 10/22 with a scope and tricked out trigger, maybe a 30 round clip...

Ahh screw it, propane tanks, duct tape, and a box of nails from Home Depot...

AAAHHH don't we gunfolk love the "RED DAWN" senerio? Tough bands of loyal patriots hiding in the forests and mountains, fighting the good fight against impossible odds until Mom and apple pie are reinstated. ahem.

First we might need to adjust our thinking here. The greatest dangers to the average citizen in the U.S. is from domestic civil unrest and from the influx of immigrants not from the Red Hordes of the Peoples Army. In a worst case example the US and China might get in a nuclear boxing match. the results of such an exchange would wipe most of us outwithin a month if not instantly. A good topic would be "What rifle would you like to be found clutching when fried or found hairless dead in your basement." For those of us that survive the destruction of our country, lives and society it would survival on the most basic of levels.

First there are the basics of survival like food, water, shelter, medicine ect. The most simple discourse on how to provide them would fill volumes. But as far as weapons I keep a set of stuff ready 24/7/365. In the tool box of my truck.
1. Soviet made assault vest that holds up to 8 AK 47 mags, Air Force pilot's knife, plus spare AK parts, cleaning supplies, poncho and survival gear. I generally don't keep more than 2 extra AK mags in it at any given time. Thats all i really need and more would be just extra weight. I do carry plenty of spare AK ammo on stripper clips and a mag loader The vest has a handle type grip at the top so you can use it like a range bag or strap it on to "hump" your gear thru the brush.

2. AK 47 in 7.62X39 with tubular metal stock and ventilated metal upper handguard and lower fore end. Lightweight, tough as an anvil, resistant to dirt, easy to gunsmith and plenty accurate and powerful enough to use for offense or defense plus popping a stray deer, dog or other critter for food.
3. My CCW carry gun. Whichever I am carring when the SH'sTF. Holster and spare mag(s) I am carring at the time. All I carry is .40 S&W so I have some extra pistol ammo in my assault vest.
4. Small polymer frame Ruger .22 auto and a brick of .22 ammo. Plus the unassembled componets of a homemade silencer. Nothing like it for quiet and effective hunting, defense and sentry managment. I debated this addition long and hard. The weight opposed to the utility. Finally i put the pistol and all its stuff into a WWI Austrian gas mask bag and put it with my vest. When (if) the ballon goes up I will decide if the weight is worth it. It probably will be and since it is in a seperate bag i can ditch or stash it if it gets to much to hump.

RIS, the PRiCs don't have many ICBM's. Yeah, it's unlikely they hit our shores anytime soon. (See my comment re teleportation devices.) However, they are a totalitarian regime that needs resources. They have to get them from somewhere, and they don't give a tinker's dam about human life. ("They" to mean the Chinese "Old Guard" in power.)

My 1903 springfield sporter with a redfield peep sight.
I have lots of AP and tracer and it can hit any resonable
target out to 4oo yards. Another bonus is I can take it apart quickly into a stock and bbl action to fit in my "gym bag".

Well, I live on top of a very steep hill, the first rifle I would love to have if I had time to think a little would have to be a Barrett in .50bmg with a nice scope,,,,that way you can get a good start at chopping their numbers down.

Once they started moving closer I would head out the door in the opposite direction carrying my AR-15 with lots of .223,,,,,,,,,,,it would also be nice to have a scoped 10/22, but carrying two rifles would not be the easyest thing to do.

What a feeling that would be perching up with a nice Barrett with a powerful scope and bipod,,,they might think twice hearing that sucker crack a few times.

And if all lese fails, I would pray to Carlos Hathcock to come down from the heavens and assist me wit my little problem. He would have a nice 30.06 of course.

Well, back to reality.

Jason

My 30.06 Bolt action with as much Nosler partition (or AP ammo) that I could carry. (Not fancy, but DAMN effective in the right hands.) If I can see it in my scope, it’s gonna have a VERY bad hair day… Typical Chinese grunt is not going to have armor that is going to even come close to stopping a 180gr Nosler. Bye bye Chi-com… For short range encounters and personal sidearm, a 1911-A1 with many clips loaded to the gills with 230gr Corbon, and a FN Five-SeveN for those that DO have armor.

And a .22 LR just to piss them off. :)

Chines Nuclear Capabilities

You remarked that the Chinese do not have many ICBM's, they at present have precisely 20 capable of striking US territory. Of course these are the same missiles they used to try and launch our satellites... so maybe half could get off the ground... Course all of them take 30-60 minutes to prepare to take off... thus if we had an Ohio Class Submarine off their coast we could very easily take out their entire nuclear capability. They do have a few submarines carrying missiles but they are loud, and radioactive, and need to surface to launch.
The bad news:
In 4 years or less they will have multiple mobile ICBM's, which cannot be so easily dispensed with and will be far more capable thanks to Clinton's policy of selling off our technology.
The rifle anyone chooses in such a situation is rather a moot point, unless it fires time-travelling bullets that can prevent the sale of missile technology to the Chinese.

Morgan,

The Chinese already have mobile ICBMs. They are not the same as their satellite launch vehicles and the fixed launchers are burried deep in mountain silos. Their missile submarine (note: singular, not plural) though noisy is capable of sub surface launch. Their stockpile is small, but it was designed to have a second strike capability against a Soviet first strike. It is not as easy to eliminate as you suggest.

The Chinese are very annoyed with our Ballistic Missile Defence plans as it will neutralize their meager deterrance. Should BMD be approved, look forward to a dramatic increase in stockpile to overwhelm BMD.

Trying to keep up with Western military technology is what accelerated the bankruptcy of the Soviet Union. I hope the Chinese try to compete in that area. It will hasten the downfall of the Chinese Communist Party.

Thumbtack:

Who is kidding who? I'm more worried about folks already here. The Chinese would send mushroom makers and not soldiers.

Should I survive the mushroom cloud..which I doubt.. My area, S.F. will certainly be ground zero, since much of the East Coast can't be reached by their weapon systems..at least not yet! Anyway, if I survive, I think that many people will revert to the savages that they are. My Carbon 15 goes with me, when I leave my domicile..the hole in the ground. My 870 is for close combat, cave defense and my SL-8 will be used as a standoff weapon.

Should the Chinese come, I sure hope that they bring me some food, because there just isn't much to eat.. other than my neighbor:)

What Rifle Would You Grab First

I love this forum! Such a question.

Considering what I own. My Ruger Mini-14. Such a simple sweet and reliable rifle. With the proper sights, look out at 300 yards. So in-expensive for what you get. That rifle will shoot no matter what!

And .223 ammo grows on trees.

The Chicoms, what a joke. Just try us! They are so friggin backwards, like the Iraqi army, there may be a lot of them, but the days of the effectiveness of the "human wave" attack are long gone.

Don't those idiots get it? Stop testing us. Anyone who studies the Gulf War, please.

Air superiority in a week. Nuclear umbrella. Does anyone really realize that one Trident sub can lay waste to the entire industrial complex of China! Their WWII tanks against the M1 Abrahms! They may have 1.3 billion walking souls, but that does not mean squat on the modern battlefield. Things have changed since Korea big time.

Clearly the biggest danger is the ignorance of the Chinese millitary leadership. They have no clue.

I would make a terrible leader because I would have melted china into a 12 foot deep layer of melted rock by now. I would have asked desert storm troops to level baghdad and melt the sand to glass. I have no sense of humor with people trying to hurt my country or family.

quantico,

I pretty much agree with you. The lead tank leaving the rubble that was Baghdad would have had a piece of rebar welded to the bow. Saddam's head would have decorated it. All the members of the Iraqi Ba'ath Socialist Party would have followed their leader.
