What revolver would you rather have? 10mm or .44magnum?

Hmmm...

With "defense" thrown in there, a 3" or 4" 610 10mm has a couple of powerful arguments in its favor: faster follow-up shots with good defense-grade loads (I'd rather have a stout 155gr or 180gr 10mm than a 200gr .44 Special, and a 240gr .44 Magnum may be kinda overkill for most defense uses) plus the faster reloads allowed by moonclips.

WESHOOT2,

Yeah, I can see where bullet weights up to 320gr are going to be real useful for "defense and target shooting"... ;)

Actually, in my world the 41 Mag and 10mm are pretty close. Ballistically speaking anyway. Outa the 2 Id take the 44 Mag.
Shoot well

Of the options listed, a 44Mag for me. Since I don't "roll my own" ammo right now, the 44 gets the nod for off the shelf ammo availability.

Don't get me wrong...

...I actually CCW a .44 Magnum every now and again, but I'd just as soon tote a 3" or 4" 610 for self-defense. 10mm has plenty enough oomph for 2-legged critters, and offers faster reloads via moonclips. It's no slouch at the target range, either.

...and for those complaining about the scarcity and/or cost of 10mm ammo (which is cheaper than .44 Mag in my neck of the woods), don't forget that a 10mm wheelgun can shoot cheap and abundant .40 cal target loads all day long. ;)

If we're talking self defense while hiking in carnivorous critter country, hunting, or a bad case of JustGottaHaveAMagnumitis, then by all means, get the .44; but for the stated use of "defense and target shooting", the 10mm wheelgun has a lot going for it.

Availability varies.
I can get 44 mag at convenience store in the village, but not 10mm or .40.

Or....one of my refrigerators usually has a few gallons of .44 in Tupperware.:D

Sam

for defense and target shooting at ranges past 25 yards?

10mm gets iffy at 100yds, and is pretty much worthless at 200yds+ where the 44 is fine.

As far as defense beyond 25yds, I assume you mean SHTF defense ;)

No question, .44 Mag.
It has been my experience that no handgun round is "plenty" for humans. A 180 grain bullet at 1700 fps, is nothing to sneeze at however.
If I have to reload in a defensive situation, I am in trouble. If I am in trouble, I have speedloaders for my 4" Model 29.
I don't own a 10mm, but my Model 29 is supremly accurate, the action is unbelieveable, and it isn't all that huge to carry.
You don't mention how far past 25 yards we are talking about but I can hit a paper plate offhand at 50 yards more often than not with my .44 (granted, no one is shooting back and I am taking all the time in the world to do it).
If we are talking about defense against large animals, then the heavyweight .44 bullets come into play. And, they have taken every animal on the face of the earth out of a handgun.

All that being said, I would still prefer a .357 also. Why, I can't justify it, but I would.

I, myself, have been struggling with a serious mojo for a 7- or 8-shot .357 set up for moon clips... :D

Given the stated parameters, I'd pick the .44 Mag...BUT, a 10mm revo, with a pile o'full-moon clips is a BLAST!!! EVERYONE needs at least ONE good "moon-clipped" revo....REALLY!!!....mikey357
