What is your answer when you are asked why do you carry a gun.

Because there are people who will try to harm their fellow
man for the next $20 just for a high.

And those people don't just live in the sticks anymore.

They're everywhere.

I have three relatives who work Drug Task Force / Canine units in
3 different counties. You should hear the numbers / stories.

Two smaller ones and one big metro county.

Lots of ways to answer the question.

A good one would be "I don't understand the question. Why wouldn't I carry a gun?"

Because I read the papers.

So I might have something to say about whether I live or die-- and I don't mean down on my knees or in the trunk of my car begging for my life.

Or maybe just "for self protection". At that point, the anti-gun person might ask "what are the odds it would happen to you? Pretty slim aren't they?" Or make a similar point.

My reply (I've sorta ambushed them:D) is that the odds of it happening to me are about the same as for all the unarmed people it happens to every day when the odds said it wouldn't. Or words to that effect.

Can't really use the same reply in all cases, because some nice people have asked me that question, and some who were simply anti-gun and antagonistic.

A good answer in my opinion is that we carry weapons out of love. Love for our families, friends and countrymen. Love to protect them from potential tyrannical government, from enemies at home or abroad. Evil never makes an appointment. I just shows up on your door step.

Wouldn't the President call first?
I couldn't resist it as a joke,i actually like the guy. And lets please keep any comments about my joke light hearted also :)

All of the above plus "because I'm brown." I'm hispanic, but I also look any variety of mediterranean/middle eastern. When I'm driving through small towns, I do get my share of looks, some curious, others hostile. You never know when some people want to be more . . . proactive.

Hell, I was in a diner in some one-stop sign place and everyone, including the police, was looking. I even had my pocket New Testament out and was reading it. So much for fellowship.

I gotta admit its got to be a hard time with a Hispanic or Middle Eastern looking man in his younger years. But in a country with so many mixed nationalities its gonna be hard to avoid it.
Luckily its only been males who have created the crimes against the USA, If a female tries or succeeds i feel it will double the discrimination.

Just remember not everyone is like that, But racism is a natural part of man imo and the only thing that fixes it is time.

I admit mine, It drives me insane to see gang bangers in the gun store looking at the Deasert Eagles and the AR-15's while doing it very loudly. I don't think its so much as to "WHO" they are, But the lack of respect they show guns, safety and courtesy.

Since you do have a permit to carry at least that will prove on the surface to someone you are a valuable member of "OUR" country and have earned the right to do some things many people take for granted.

Change is slow for people, So be patient and don't give up.

Because I'm an American.

My friend and I were open carrying (it is legal here) one day comming home from my father-in-law's property where we have set up a small shooting area. We stopped in at a large public dairy to get some ice cream (laugh if you want but it is AMAZING). While in there, someone tapped my friend on the shoulder and asked in a european accent "My son wants to know why you are wearing guns." My friend looked and said "In this state, if you have a permit, you can legally carry a gun" The gentleman than said "Oh...so you're not police" and to that my friend answered "No, I'm an American."
I don't think any other answer was needed.

I was only asked once. I told the person I carried one because grenades are too messy and they get heavy after a while.:D

I've never been spotted out in public and confronted (though I imagine I've flashed a few people unintentionally). When people who know I carry ask, I usually tell them that it's because I can draw, aim and fire much faster than I can dial 911.

Shelby my father-in-law said the exact same thing. He is 77 and a heck of a shot. Not the kind of "old man" people want to mess with. Most of my family members know I carry and they never have said anything. They do, however, seem to be a lot more at ease knowing I do.

I see it as insurance. People insur their homes and cars even though they don't want any thing to happen to them. And I think I am more valuable IMHO then my property. So a gun is just insurance for me.

My dad used to always say " 'cause I dont want to get caught using a knife in a gun fight."

My response is usually " 'cause I'm just too old to take another ass-kick'n".

I direct them to my website to learn about why I do it...

I simply state that the reason I carry is based on many life experiences and direct them to my site for more detail. Then, if they are truley interested and not just looking to argue, they have to take the next step.
