What is up with all the dressed up AK's?

I see many people are speaking without experience. I was skeptical of red dots and such until I was sent to Iraq and was issued one. 1. faster target acquisition. 2. Greater accuracy. (at least for me) Put a red dot on an AK, guess what? Same thing. Faster target acquisition and greater accuracy. If you don't understand this then go try it for yourself. Also, I do a lot of training but I don't like AR's, so I use AK's. Many don't understand the potential for AK's and think of them as archaic hold overs. Not so. If you don't like the tactical stuff, that's fine; to each his own. However, there are many practical applications for this tactical side of the 'sport.' How do you think our troops and Swat teams evolve their training? Because of Trainers trying new things and finding more efficient ways to do things. If not we'd still be back to the old G-man style of pistol shooting. (look it up, its hilarious.)

Mine is a combination of most all the above. When you actually build an AK on a US made receiver, a certain number of other US made parts have to go into the mix. It is only natural to include IMPROVED US made parts if not needing to keep it original looking. My gun has US made parts that upgrade it a bit, and a Zeiss Z-Point to really enhance speed and target acquisition. The rifle was a combination of Hungarian and Romanian parts to start with, so adding non-stock AK parts didn't hurt it. Together with the Z-Point, this gun came in less expensive than starter AR from most makers.

Don't mind the looks of a dress up AK. But, I'm more of the traditionalist. Folding Chicom, Romanian AK in what they sold as "Urban Sniper outfit", And the Romanian version of the Druganove. Yes I know it's not technically an AK but beside the cal. it's durn close. (forgive the bad pictures, I've got to get better ones.)

Radom:
Its kind of like the pictures you see on that "people of wall-mart" web site with the 500 pound women dressed up in outfits like they are super models.

I'm having flashbacks to that commercial in the 80s where the "Russian" Size 18 model wore the same dress/smock/mumu for "formal wear", "swim wear" , "evening wear." etc, except "evening wear" had a Maglight flashlight accessory.

I almost laughed myself off my chair.

This is my first post on this site and I won't lie I have never stop an AK variant nor do I own one but I'm with a lot of you guys in that if an add on or extra doesn't have a purpose it shouldn't be on the gun. I have noticed a lot of manufactorers dressing up rifles because it attracts the newbie owners like myself. lol. I have a couple add ons to me M&P15-22 but only stuff I can see will have real benefits to my shooting.

Overkill

pun intended. I thought I overdid my AK by attaching a pistol grip laser and light. Wrong. We all did some night hunting for predators and the light beam really lit up the area. Much better than just a hand held flashlight and kept my hands on the rifle. The pistol grip lighting was both functional and, frankly, cool looking. Oh yeah, the 80 round drum mag was a bonus for real hard a** cachet. The AK-47 just begs for accessories!!

Thank you!

Father Time had it right, younguns! The EoTech holographic sight is a great "on target" asset for we more... "eye sight compromised" members of the esteemed hunting community. The EoTech dialed in my bullseye target patterns tightly. It cost more than my rifle, but was worth it. Another advantage of age... more discresionary spending on gadgets. Am I frivolous.. absolutely. Do I care.. heck no. Lock and load up those accessories.

I like how people think they are gods gift to the world because they use iron sights.

I can tell you... I have shot iron sight rifle competition for a long time, and even won my first match at age 12. I can probably shoot your rifles better than most of you.

That being said... the 1 MOA dot on my EO-Tech on my AR performs much easier.. and better than any iron sights on an AR. Also the 4.5 MOA dot on my Trijicon Reflex on my other AR will still pretty much out perform iron sights.

Iron's are a great thing to have and use, and I always keep a back up set on or with the rifle.. but really they are far from the best.

I use my Barbie Doll AR for my home defense gun. I live in the country.. if I call the cops a GOOD response time might be 30-45 mins. My closest neighbor is probably close to a mile down the road. I live alone.

My main AR right now is a CMT lower.. with a BCM 14.5'' middy upper with the mil-spec front sight post. It has a Magpul CTR stock, Falcon Ergo grip, a Troy industries quad rail, and a Magpul AFG.

Why the CTR stock... honestly I got it for free on another used AR, but it is a solid compact stock, worlds above the mil-spec ones.

Why the Falcon Ergo grip? I love this thing. It is grippy when my hands are sweaty, and slim for my short fingers.

Why the quad rail? Well seeing as it is my HD gun, I have a Surefire Scout weapon light mounted to it, along with my Magpul AFG.

Why the Magpul AFG? Honestly, I got it at a discount through work, tried it, and loved it. It is comfortable, to me.. and I can see it's not for everyone... personally I hate vertical grips.

On top I have an Eo-tech that co-witness's with my Mil-spec front sight, and my flip up back up rear sight.

I wouldn't consider my rifle a Barbie doll when the things I have on it serve a purpose. Sure the mil-spec stock and grip might work, but I have the money to get ones that are personally more comfortable, and work better for me, so why wouldn't I?

If you don't want to get with the times... that is fine with me, but you shouldn't put others down for buying what they like with their money.

If the "old skool" is the only thing you know.. you can get a Mosin Nagant for about $50, I am also sure you can find some "vintage" era spam can 7.62x54R ammo for it. You won't even need a flashlight mounted to it... you can just light the front half of your stock on fire from all the kerosene you soaked it in trying to remove the cosmoline:rolleyes: Plus you get that sweet bayonet that essential turns your rifle into a War Pike.... and I kid you not.. a man charging at me with a half flaming War-Pike / rifle would be a lot scarier than a man shooting at me with a dressed up AR/AK;);)

And before you go calling me a Mall Ninja... my AR protects safes full of old Sako's, Winchesters, even had my fair share of 1903's, Garands, M1A's ect.
