What is up with all the dressed up AK's?

Went to the local gun show this weekend, and noticed all these AK's with SOPMOD rail type systems, lasers, scopes, bi-pods, flashlights. I mean... I can understand a folder on one, but why all the Hollywood looking stuff on a them? I always thought the beauty of the AK was how simple and straight forward it is. Seems like it would complicated a otherwise simple design.

I have been out of the gun hobby for a few years. I remember when Maadi MISR-10's were considered cheap and ugly. I had one.

At the show people were selling them as if they were some collectible relic!

Also I remember years ago when those side rails came out...jokers were having a time setting up rails, scopes and red dot type sites on their AK's. Now we have advanced to flashlights, and lasers?

Well, I don't really spend a lot of time with AKs, so I am just guessing; but in addition to the obvious marketing aspects, it could also be that someone just likes AKs and wants to figure out how to attach a flashlight to it so he can see what he is shooting at in the dark/low light. Or he may not buy into the common wisdom of the Internet that the AK is wildly inaccurate and wants to put a bipod on it to see exactly what it can do.

Seems like it would complicated a otherwise simple design.

I've always felt that way about the Model T. Here is a nice, uncomplicated design that anyone can work on. Sure, it may not be the fastest or loaded with all kinds of gadgets that you don't really need; but you never have to take it in because the diagnostic computer is acting up, do you? Yet all these heathens insist on their newfangled fuel injection, GPS, bluetooth compatible stereo radios (Not just simple radio mind you; but STEREO even). All kinds of needless complexity added to a simple, reliable design.

And don't even get me started on smokeless powder.... the devil's own invention I tell ya!

There you go.

Before you look too much further, let me warn you that you can find revolvers with lasers, lights, and optics, along with shotguns that have them as well. Heck, Stoeger makes a coach gun with rails on it for optics and lights!

And if you are sitting down now, you can buy bayonets for pistols, too!

kraigwy, that is a very pretty pig!

for me, putting anything else than a red dot or scope on rifles like the AR's and AK's is just wasting money that could be used for ammo for ordinary citizens.

Tacti-Cool pieces to show off at the range would be one guess. In my opinion, shooting with uncovered rails is pretty uncomfortable unless they're up front and out of the way.

BTW: I like the pict. of the pig wearing lipstick.

well I own one of the dressed up aks, I would like to have a true blue all wood beauty but it's becoming hard to find one. my reasoning behind the dressed up ak was because I loved the different applications that the AR could be used for but ammo prices for 223/5.56 suck and the parts, though easily available, are fragile. so I went out and bought an AK because of cheap ammo and toughness. I wanted one that I didn't have to worry about getting with scratched and battered furniture and I didn't want to have to worry about doing that myself so I got all synthetic furniture. I didn't really want a four rail but that's all the LGS had in stock. I also do much better with red dots than iron sights so I threw a red dot on the four rail hand guard and now I I'm have the best of both worlds.

it's just a way to add all that newfangled technological advancement to a gun that many people already trust and enjoy. marketing, supply, demand and a whole lot of bullet holes

Those that have not fired an enhanced AK can only speculate as to why...

That is what they said about Dragunov dressed, super sniper SKS rifles, that had the bubba stamp of approval on them. LOL

I have nothing against synthetic furniture. In fact I have one of those cheesy Tapco folders on mine. As a folder it sucks! Gets in the way when charging the gun when folded down. I would rather find a Romanian wire folder. The only plus to this Tapco stock is the extra two inches of pull. Other than that I don't like it folded down. As soon as I can find a wire stock I will get one.

We want those low-speed, high-drag AK's to be high-speed, low drag, or at least look the part!

Red dot for faster sight aquisition
foregrip because the handguard gets hot
folding stock for compactness

11lb AK because 8lbs is just too sleek and simple in these days of modern gadgetry.

I dont know if mines a tapco but that's pretty much the story on mine too. I just fold it for compact storage and unfold for actual chooting. I guess I finger that if I want to choot an AK like a pistol I'll just get a draco and actually have an AK pistol. I would agree though, they really didn't think that design through when they made it.

You're right T-90. The advantage of the AK is it's simplicity. In my opinion, adding anything that isn't necessary to a battle rifle is a mistake.

Ammo prices are dependent on supply and demand, source country, and the quality of the product. There is no Wolf plant in America paying $2.50 an hour, no benefits, and workers riding their bicycles in the rain a half hour to work.

Most of the AK parts exist because they are retrofit AR parts. If it wasn't for AR shooters buying the stuff, AK owners wouldn't have jack to bolt onto their guns.

If someone thinks AR parts are fragile, be advised, the AK parts are made of the exact same materials and are coming off the same machines in the same shops. So, if fragile junk is all someone sees, stop buying it and get the real thing - not Airsoft accessories.
