What is the worst gun related advice you have ever gotten?

I have only one.

Buy Colt because all others are sub-par it.Umm yea right

Now my wife loves to **** off counter monkeys who give her a load of free advice. It has happened on at least 4 occasions

If a 12 ga. 3" shell will fit in your 12 ga. shotgun, then you have a 3" chamber and can shoot 3" shells safely!

Years ago: "Don't pay $1200 for that American Eagle Luger. It's overpriced."

Oh yeah, "Sell your machine guns (1979) they're never going to be worth any more than they are now." I took the first advice but not the second.:D

During a machine gun exercise, a butterbar was yelling at me to wait on the others for "talking guns." It was supposed to be realistic, in that we had reactive targets. When I disregarded his advice, he got a little louder about it. I had to explain to him that targets in the open with all the other guns down meant I was good to go. He didn't buy it so I eventually listened. Then I got my butt chewed by some of the senior enlisted for not firing.

Another butterbar on my Iraq deployment told me to move my truck off the side of a main road while we were holding a cordon. I tried to tell him my truck with the 240B on top should be the first line of defense. He promptly told me his 2 guys with their m16's would be better. This is a main road with no speed limit. The lt. didnt like what I had to say about his lack of experience or lack thereof once back at base.

There was a great old gentleman who was a fixture at the Sportsman's club where I began my shooting. He had many different guns that he let me try, he had many years of great advice, hints and tips, he was safety oriented and a fine shot and enjoyable to be around. He gave me my first pair of shooting glasses back in the late 80s when most folks didn't wear them, myself included.

He did give me one "hint" way back when that I just couldn't take advantage of, nor recommend to anyone else.

He told me that if I found myself at a place where some informal shooting started up and I didn't have any ear protection that I could always come up with something that would work well and that is almost always available.

I figured he was going to suggest I stick my fingers in my ears! ;) He said, "Nope, just grab an old cigarette butt and fold it over and stick one in each ear. Works great and they are easy to find, and this way keeps your hands free."

Yuk. :p

Great guy, Bill Orosz.

True "gems"....

I've heard a few "nuggets" over the years.
One of the best "error-net" posts I read was related to lethal force incidents & tactics.
Some forum member stated; "Never do a tactical reload or recharge your carry/duty pistol, with a fully loaded magazine after a firefight because you may be arrested for tampering with evidence or obstruction of justice!"

Go hunting with a guy who shot his boss in the head with a nailgun, and had an ND with his weapon in my home! The names have been changed to protect the fruitcake...:D

Just a couple of weeks ago a new guy at the range was telling me not to clean a new gun until after the first 500 rounds - that it breaks in faster this way. He said this while firing lapping rounds through his "new" gun. That he had showed off earlier with the target that the guy who sold it to him included as proof that the gun shot 1/4" groups. A trifecta of fail. I said nothing.
