What is the hardest to find pistol ammo?

After my first post I did think about 7.62X38 Russian for the Nagant. Especially after I looked at a Cabela's add that showed they are now selling them.
Also the 41 Mag, 357 Sig, and 45 GAP are good points. How about 327 Federal. Is it getting harder to find?

If it's a new gun, the answer is easy. Cimarron Lightning in .41 Long Colt.

I have yet to see a LGS that stocks .41LC, and the price of new ammo and cases will make your jaw drop.

Furthermore, AFAIK bullet casting molds aren't even made for this cartridge, probably because of the inconsistent bore diameters used by Colt. The cartridge was originally loaded with a heeled outside-lubricated bullet, but Colt later switched to a smaller-caliber inside-lubricated bullet with an expanding base, but they apparently never firmly decided what caliber to use*; their later revolvers were reportedly built with a baffling array of bore diameters. AFAIK molds used to be produced in several different calibers- the shooter / bullet caster was expected to slug the bore and match the mold to the individual gun- but as the cartridge fell into obsolescence, the molds were discontinued, and people now have to custom-order .41LC molds.

*Footnote: Firing undersize .41LC expanding-base bullets in oversize bores never worked very well and gave the cartridge a reputation for "can't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside" accuracy; this is often given as the reason why the cartridge was eclipsed by .38 Special and fell into near-total disuse.

If you watch Gunbroker, every once in a while you will see a Baby Eagle (Jericho 941) in .41 AE. They aren't to expensive and I don't know if .41 AE is made anymore.

What pistol can you still buy on the primary or resale market that has ammo that is very difficult if not impossible to find?

My take of the OP question was ammo for a gun that you can walk into almost any gun shop, or gun show and buy. Not some 100 year old obsolete curio, or collector piece.

How about a pistol that was common (Star, Llama for example) but no longer is. Remove the firing pin. Might be very difficult to find replacement parts for some models. Caliber would then be irrelevant.

Later on, you could let the gift recipient know that you "found" a replacement part for them. :D

Same here- hence the new Cimarron in an obsolete caliber (.41 Long Colt), see my prior post. :)

FWIW Cimarron also sells numerous guns marked ".38 Long Colt" but AFAIK all of them also chamber .38Spl so they don't really count. ;)

Nag

Currently available on the resale market - hard to find ammo.
Yeah, the Nagant pistol. There has been a steady market for them because of the price but factory 7.62 Nagant ammo is not to be found just anywhere.
Any of the .41s is tough to find ammo for.
.380 ACP.....a joke. New guns being made steadily. Ammo? Nuh-uh.

I hardly ever see the .25 Auto for sale. It is not obsolete, but it is very hard to find, unless you want to order it off line.

I would appreciate a gun for a gift, but every time I went to buy ammo for it, I would be, sorta, kinda, cussing you under my breath. Evil, pure evil... I love it. :D

From personal experience of some family members...

My father in law has an ancient revolver in 38 SW (a less potent cartridge than 38 special). He had a hard time finding ammo for it, and I had to order on-line.

Another family member carries a 9x18 makarov for CCW, and he can't buy that ammo just anywhere

7.62 tokorev can be tough to find, and 30 luger can also be tough.

I almost bought a 41 AE back in the day.... and then the 40 SW was introduced.... glad I didn't make that mistake.

What ever you are out of at the moment!

What ever ammo you are out of and need at the moment always seems to be in short supply at the LGS/BigBox.
