What is the hardest to find pistol ammo?

What pistol can you still buy on the primary or resale market that has ammo that is very difficult if not impossible to find?

UPDATE / MORE INFO: There is a tradition started some time ago to get the other person a Christmas gift that looks great but has some not so obvious quirk. (The best one yet was a guard dog that couldn't bark)
I'm looking for a handgun as this coming year's gift. The goal is that the recipient will likely not easily find ammo.

I saw the pin fire reference but not sure I can find that type pistol for a nominal budget of $ 600. Any suggestions appreciated.

anything pin fire for a quick guess

As I understand your question, it isn't about obsolete ammo, but rather hard to find current ammunition.
I would say at the XXXMarts, and XXXSports big stores that sell guns and ammo in the department over in the corner, behind the ball gloves and golf clubs. and smaller gun shops it would be 7.62X25 for the Tokarev, and CZ 52 9X18 Makarov, and 10MM.
 
Hardest ammo for me to find is Winchester 150 grn LSWC, none +p, none HP.

I tried to switch to Remington only to find out it take 2 ti 3 hammer stricks to get it to go off with my 642, and no its not the gun, it works with everything else including my reloads with Remington primers.
 
what about a herter's 401 powermag?
that would fit the bill..
you can do a search..they exist and are obscure, there is a good post on the smith&wesson forum, and there is one for sale on gunbroker..
 
Around my parts it would be .38 or .380, EVERY store you go to says "I don't know man, we've had it backordered for weeks now"
 
I haven't looked that hard, and don't own one, but I imagine .25 and .32 NAA are hard to come by. At times, especially when certain elections are about to happen, the answer is 9mm.
 
I dont know about the hardest to find, but in context of the thread im going to recommend a nagant revolver.

And thats the second time today.

Wierd lookin' round, great for a gag. look for a picture. good history and story on that.

and $100 isnt bad for a gag either. and when its all over its a fine handgun and a fine cartridge.
 
Another vote for nagant revolver. cant go wrong for $100

ammo is hard to find but not impossible so they can use it every once in a while..specially when you factor in 32 long colt
 
Another vote for nagant revolver. $100 and you're set. Make sure to get them at least one box of ammo just to give em a then watch them squirm later on
 
Nagant revolver is good (I just saw your update about what you're up to), but something a little nicer would be a Webley Mk4, or Colt Police Positive revolver. You can get a good one for about $300. .38 S&W (a.k.a. .38 Colt NP) is hard enough to find, and impossible with heavy bullets for the Webley.
