what if your training led to this - Katrina confiscation

yes it was Louisiana, but the Leo's in question came from a wide variety of other jurisdictions. Thus there actions can be taken as indicative of the the action that would be taken in those jurisdictions should similar circumstance arise or be manufactured.
Truth be told the South has away been more friendly to firearms ownership than than Yankeeland so I do not see where it necessarily applies that Louisiana is an exception rather than the rule.

LEOs

Again... I think the situation was something no one had encountered and is a good lessons learned. I was over in La. for 6 months helping with this disaster and from first hand experience tell you that no one was prepared for this. Look at how Texas handled things (and I am a Yankee but live in Texas) especially in Port Authur... people knew how to respond. Louisiana was ill prepared... had Leaders (Governor/Mayors) laying blame instead of responding. I am not a LEO but respect them and know that most are above reproach. It is truly a shame that so many want to base Katrina/Rita actions of a few on on LEOs.

Hate to tell you guys... get the Democrats out if you want true change (as well as some of the Republicans -- i.e., Mayor Blommberg).

Do not comply to confiscation...

The right thing isn't always the easiest, and the right thing would be to refuse to have your guns confiscated.

i lost all respect for law officers and military personel. i no longer feel sadness when i see either getting killed on the news. right or wrong, thats how i feel. i see all of them as someone who will try and disarm me when ordered and leave me and my family to the thugs.

i always thought i would help a cop if he was in trouble with thugs. today i wouldn't bother. when i see them i see a robot that will follow orders even if its wrong. i see someone who is there to collect a check but doesn't want the risk. the way they take cover and stay away while thugs go in schools and slaughter students. they stay away until the thug had his fill and kills himself. combine was the perfect example. vt also?

i have a cousin in law enforcement. we talk about this. he assures me he wouldn't do that even if ordered. i see a liar.

i was selling my truck not long ago. a young guy stopped by to look. he said something about being in the national guard. i asked if he was in new orleans after katrina. yep. i asked if he was ordered to take guns from house to house would he? he didn't comment. i said "get the **** off my property, you have nothing to be proud of and your kind aren't welcome here"

Sounds like there are a few idjits here. As someone who served I can tell you the question of what we would do if asked to project force on our own soil came up quite often, and the usual consensus was it would depend on the circumstances. If a group of Americans of "middle eastern descent and islamic guidings" were to begin an insurrection(that means uprising for you Arkansas folks;) )there'd be hell to pay. If the government was trying to impose draconian measures on the people and deny them their constitutional rights...you'd probably be suprised at how many of the military would either stand down against unlawful orders or do what they swore and uphold your rights against all threats foreign and domestic. I have no beef with LEOs other than the fact that it seems most police depts now see revenue as priority one instead of going after violent criminals, hey for what they get paid, I can't blame them. All that said, if some disaster were to hit here, and I having the presence of mind had made preparations and was self sufficient, and others were trying to forcibly take my stockpile(I would never turn away someone in need even if it meant going without myself, but don't show up at my door and try and take my supplies at gunpoint) I could not allow myself to be disarmed, even by police or military. My first obligation is to my family and I MUST be able to defend them, my second obligation is to defend the rights so many gave their lives to ensure I and future generations could enjoy. The US is the greatest country in the world for a reason, our forefathers earned it for us, the question is, are we men enough to deserve and defend what we've been given.

That sounds all warm and fuzzy, but we were always told that about Most LEO's. Katrina opened our eyes.

I hope you are right about the military, because we were wrong about LEO's.

Some of you guys are only seeing part of the picture. One of my very good friends lives in New Orleans, and is an LEO, after the hurricane, he was ARMING his neighbors. You saw on the media, what the media wanted you to see, remember the canoe in 3" of water? The city was sued and the weapons returned, and people lost their jobs over that, and yes there are now laws all over the country to prevent that from ever happening again.

New Orleans is still a disaster.

My town was severely damaged by a flood 10 years ago, there was no looting, some people moved away. Rebuilding started immediatly.Today the people have moved back and the population exceeds that of pre flood years. But of course, people here are not on welfare, dependent on the government to rescue them. When we have freak blizzards we don't go crying for help, we saddle-up and go help our neighbors.

I am very pro 2nd ammendment, otherwise I would not be here posting. I am also a career LEO having served almost 30 years in the military and local/federal LE; I am proud of that.

Do not paint all Police and Military with the same brush as all members of these groups are a cross section of society, meaning there are good and there are bad. Remembering the bad times is easy. If the prevailing attitude here is Anti-LEO and Anti government then maybe I am visiting the wrong place.

I'm not anti LEO or even anti government (well, maybe reduced government :) ). If you were one of the LEO's or government agents from any state or district that WAS doing the deed, then yes, I say the comments still stand. If your one what helps his neighbors, like your buddy, then by all means, I'll stand by you. My comments were strictly aimed at dealing with a threat, and ANY threat is a threat as far as I'm concerned, uniform or no uniform. I think we still have a right to defend ourselves in the US, although these days, who knows. Its sure not the "land of the free and home of the brave" that I grew up in.

I remember back in the 90's a questionnaire that was distributed amoungst the military and police whos results were contrary to the one posted here. The majority questioned there WOULD follow their orders, regardless. I think that Katrina proved that many did do just that.
