Well really, I'd want something with a proven track record, say a 1911 or a 1935 BHP, which is also a pretty 'deniable' piece. In fact with so many mfg's of the 1935, might be the best choice.

However, I'd also want something that can use a silencer, of the ones on the list provided I KNOW the big HK "socom" was designed for that.

As far as the M9 and the Seals, they ordered a LOT of 1 oz heavier slides that were made by Phrobis on a navy contract. Before everyone got the "spec ops" bug, everyone used what was issued. The odd balls were the navy spec ops, buying stainless 686's and mini 14's (according to Dick Marcinko).

I'd hope if I was "going commando" I had more than a wimpy pistol at my disposal, ie an M4, AK, Mp5, Shotgun, etc. Pistols are specilaty weapons, rifles are what win shoot-outs.

Well someone must be using Beretta 9mms, Todd Green of BerettaUSA recently said on the Beretta-L that a large US Spec Ops unit (didn't mention a name) were wanting to acquire a large amount of 20 round mags. Usually very hard to find since Beretta hasn't manuafactured them recently.

How long does a gun have to be out before its proven. Heck maybe I should carry a colt saa. Its another obsolete gun but its proven.

Dr.Rob,
Alot of SpecOp folks use their "wimpy" pistols as the PRIMARY weapon. Delta and DEVGRU often wear "civvies" on covert missions where only the sidearms are concealable. SEAls also use the sidearm as a primary when boarding smaller ships. Sometimes it's not practical to bring along your MP5 and have to worry about some BG snatching it around every corner.

Well if you slice the pie properly no one will grab your gun. ;) The whole POINT of the Socom pistol (which HK won) was to answer the "offensive pistol" question. IE its gonna be a supressed 10+shot 45. that gun already exists and I don't like it much. Its BIG, heavy, square and the front strap is annoying. However I'm NOT a commando, and i wasn't in on the trials.

When Mr. Murphy comes to call I want the least number of parts, a good amount of bullets and a reliable action. He asked my opinion so there it is. I still think the BHP is a viable option. Again, in being deniable, the BHP is the way to go. The FBI HRT used the HP for many years as their offensive pistol. (if that matters to anyone)

In CCW situation can you imagine shoving a Socom into your pants?

355 sig.. I am merely pointing out that while the glock has a great rep. among law enforcement, it really hasn't served anyone's army in any war that I can think of. The Glock is a good gun, no doubt about that from me. Has the glock been used in war?? What country besides Austria issues it?

Of COURSE an SAA is "outdated" in a modern war.. but I never ever read a story where an SAA jammed for any reason. As I recall the last time the SAA went to war was with Patton against Pancho Villa. It did well there, but most of the bad guys were packing SAA's too.

No flames, just honest questions and answers please.

Personally, I'd check the area of operations I was going into and base my choice on the most reliable options available in both caliber and brand of pistol.
If the Ops. O is not able to provide this info, then I'd stick with the Beretta 92FS.- You should be able to carry 5-8 mags with you.
If you need any more than that, you have a serious problem that requires the use of section fire.
9MM seems a safe bet pretty much world wide though.

It would seem logical to provide yourself with the best Intel. on the pistols available to you and Area of Ops., and carry the best suited pistol to the point of contact.

Dr.Rob,
The SOCOM MK23 is hardly used by the SEALs in offensive or defensive situations. Like you, most Operators find it too BIG and cumbersome. The Sig P226 is used for the majority of operations exept on longer dive ops where the MK23 or the 686 are used.

The Teams use the Sig P228 for covert carry not the MK23. I couldn't imagine packing that boat anchor(MK23) around all day!

Something exotic

Gee, guys, such mundane thinking. Now if I were a double-nought spy, I'd certainly opt for something I couldn't find in the local shop.

HK G36 or Sig 55x carbine

HK PDW (Personal Defense Weapon) Cal. 4.6mm x 30

If I was to carry a pistol, I would want it either to be good at penetrating armor (FN 5n7), or be silenced HK Socom, or be extremely accurate... maybe a 12" SW 629 with red dot.

For general CQB self defense, I'd probably take a glock fullsize in 10mm, with a Dokter optic and extended barrel, with a 25-round mag.
