This is just for kicks.

If you were in an elite commando unit, what brand of handgun would you carry. Caliber could range from a 9mm, .40, or .45 Don't forget that cost is not a factor since the goverment is picking up the bill. Think durability, reliability, and accuracy.

Just for fun, and just imho,
For the criteria you mentioned, in order of my personal preference,

.45's:
1. HK .45 USP Tactical (better blend of size and balance than choice #2)
2. HK .45 SOCOMM (when you run out of ammo it's a great blunt-force instrument...but seriously this sucker is big)
3. HK .45 USP (full size or compact)
4. Wilson Combat or Ed Brown 1911 (good out of the box)
5. Gunsite GSP 1911 (ditto)
6. SIG (nice triggers)
7. Glock

9MM's
1. SIG P226 (probably the finest 9)
2. HK P7M13 (Big butt, fast action)
3. HK USP 9 (capacity)
4. HK P7M8 (speed)
5. Browning Hi Power (JMB's best design)
6. Glock

.40
1. HK USP .40 (capacity, built around the .40 cartridge, reliable as sunrise.)

But like the DeNiro line in Ronin goes, it's just a tool...

The real answer is whatever you can use to put a double-tap on a 3" x 5" index card, every time. The rest is of more interest to a hobbyist.

"Custom 1911 in 45ACP. The Marines have the right idea."

...and the SEAL have the right pistols, like HK and SIG. :)

Custom 9mm BHP done by Kurt Wickmann or Novak's.
If I had to sludge in mud and other yucky places that eat pistols up I would take the Walther P99 in 9mm and with some sights that had a narrower notch than the stock pistol.

HK MK23. It's a badass gun without any work done on it. The only thing I might do if I had money to throw away is reshape the grip. You know, finger grooves made for your hand and the like.

HK : 17
Glock : 6

Hmmm. Looks like the guys at GlockTalk haven't heard about this poll yet to stuff the ballot boxes.

(I voted HK.;) )

While I don't have one, I'd go with a Glock 21. Rugged, reliable, simple with 13+1 rds of 45acp. Everything *I* need, YMMV.

Actually the SEALs also have Beretta 92 FS Brigs that were designed to be carried cocked and locked, specially ordered from BerettaUSA.

"A lot of people use Berettas. The most famous contract, of course, is the Dept. of Defense. At last count, somewhere on the order of half a million M9 handguns had been delivered to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. According to Beretta, the US Navy SEALs just placed an order for 1,800 9mm Brigadiers, specially modified for cocked-and-locked carry (they also placed an order for a large number of 1201 shotguns)."

This is quoted from http://beretta.squawk.com/ by Todd Green, who took the armorer course and is now an employee of BerettaUSA in MD.

ALREADY OWN THAT GUN

Caspian custom 1911.

But if used for elite warfare I'd add an ambi safety, install my Hogue rubber grip panels, and mount a fixed rear sight.

Oh, and get more (NP3'ed) mags...

They can have anything they want...and as far as I remember the moderator/owner(?) of tacticalforums.com (a SEAL guy) stated that their group refused Berettas over the SIG M10. He spoke about an order, something like 1500 or so pistols, but they don't
use them...

Anyway, they certainly don't use CUSTOM (in my reading this means hand fitted/adjusted to work reliably) 1911s. ;)

This depends a little if you are talking Rainbow Six/SWAT team type use, where a P7M13 would accel, or SEAL/Force Recon stuff where goop resistance is the biggest concern, where a Glock would accel. Some USP would probably be the best general issue due to strength, accuracy, carry modes and all climate resistance.

Think about it here guys...do you really think you're going to get within handgun range of a badguy when you're an specops guy? I doubt it, so my prime concern would be my choice of rifle(which is another forum). So as for the handgun I'd want anything that would go bang every single time and that is suppressed. If handguns are used in combat its either an "OH #%&^" situation or used for a special purpose (such as using it supressed)

Dan

Wow, to be a specops guy and all that high-speed gear to go with the image. A 100 lbs of light-weight equipment. I could carry that all day.

Para 14-45

Obviously a rifle is the way to go, but what if that fails, and you have to go to your sidearm.

Glad to see that H&K is winning ;)
