What if you only had FMJ?

As to the type of ball I like, I'd take Fiocci. It is fast and accurate.
As to Plusp's statement about ball in general, 115gr Gold Dot 9mm +P+ expands to about .70". To me, that would be better than .355". just an opinion.
Effectiveness is not EITHER bullet OR shooter related. Effectiveness is round performance AND shooter ability. Placement AND effectiveness. There is no magic bullet, nor are there many people who can fire the 'perfect' shot in a fluid, high-stress situation. In real life, you want EVERY advantage you can get. I want an expanding bullet because it gives me an edge. I want to practice because THAT gives me an edge. I have NO INTENTION of standing perfectly still, exposed, while I precisely aim for that 'perfect shot'.

I would only use .45 ACP !!!
9mm Luger FMJ is a crime, not ammunition !
I´m from Europe, and we have a lot of harmed and even killed innocents here. They been hit by 9mm FMJ shot-througs and ricochettes.
If you want to see your family alive after shooting, use big and slow calibers !
Even FMJTC or flatpoints walk through a body like a hot knife through butter !
Forget this stuff !
There has been an ammunition test in a german magazine. They tested 9mm deformation-ammo against FMJs.
Deformation-ammo stopped after 30 cm in the gelatin.
The FMJ walked through a block of gelatin. After 60 cm it went upwards (it described a curve in the gelatin !!!), left the gelatin and hit a steel-part from the range.
The steel was heavily damaged. The FMJ didnt loose much energy in the gelatin.
What if that gelatin had been a BG and the steel had been your child ???

Howdy!

First some words of encouragment for our fellows in New Jersey. There is one caliber that is historicaly know to be Very Leathal..the REAL .45 ( in gun rag babble the "Long Colt". The big and powerful ( 850 fps / 250 grain bullet in Winchester Super X)the non-jacketed lead bullet flattens oooh so nicely on human bone ( like the rib-cage...you may have a 50% chance of some expansion-my guess!), and the best part...it is a Revolver cartrage! This is as socialy acceptable as it gets in Handgunning. Whether you want a SAA or a modern DA -Smith makes one I hear and Colt did, alas no longer- that is up to the shooter...It' all good! I have one in SAA and the recoil is suprisingly moderate... ( For your case of home DE-fence however I reccomend the DA revolver. The gripps on most SAA types do not allow for rapid shooting due to the Plow-handle format, a more vertical grip of a DA wil keep your shooting hand in place and ready to go!)

For my good buddy "Captain Kirk", yes 9mm is a Parabellum cartridge - for war in latin. When you shoot a soldier on the opposing side it is of great benifit if the round goes through another and hopefully another...like dominoes! The Germans knew what kills and how to do it...( one of the boasts for the 30-6 cartrge was it's ability to go through 12 men in a single line..)

So if you feel uncofortable using the nine I understand... I for one will continue to use what will allow for rapid accurate and numerous shot placement..the 9mm.

Peace
 IZZY

Dr. Rob and others:

Does anyone make factory ammo in .45 acp +P with 200 or 230 FMJ or truncated cone, not regular pressure ammo?

I'm not sure what current specs on IMI .45 ACP 230gr. RN ball is but, I have a quantity of it from '86 or '87 this is very near +P velocities from a standard 5" Colt.

I think you can still get IMI in .45 ACP.

Hey Gusgus and JMC, my father (i shoot all of his guns, i don't actually own any guns but shoot them and when i turn 18 most of them are mine) actually DID register his AR-15 under the assault weapons ban and can now own all of the 6 30rd mags he has for it legally. he was one of i think only 75 or so people who did this out of the 1000s of people who owned those 5 guns.

I was wondering two things:

1. since my father registered his AR-15 and can legally own the hi-cap mags, can he also legally own other non AR-15 hi cap mags like our beretta 92FS 15rd mags?

2. if i inherit his AR-15 can i also legally own the hi-caps?

wait a minute now, i just read over some of your posts and some of you said that NJ law prohibts the owning of mags over 15rds. i thought it was 10rds. my beretta mags are 15rds. are they legal?

exept for my AR-15 mags (which are legal) i dont' own any mags over 15rds. am i ok now?

Russell Buddy, Just remember that Jim and I weren't trying to pick on you. We just don't want to see a fellow gun enthusiast get in trouble due to not knowing the law. Yes, your 92FS 15 round mags are completely legal, and you can legally buy all that you can find. But, that doesn't mean that they will still be legal 2 years from now, so I wouldn't spend a lot of money on them. It's a sad thought, but someday our current 10 rounders may be treasured "pre-ban hi-caps".

Keep shooting, and stay safe,
David

The .45 ball ammo will make a big hole going in and coming out, thus letting in a lot of air and out a lot of blood. What is the chances of any hollow point opening up anyways. If the hollow point is pluged with a piece of clothing it turns into ball ammo anyways.

Russell,

Your Father's registered AR-15 can not be passed on to you or anyone else after he passes on. The heirs or estate have 90 days to dispose of the "assault weapon".

There are provision for legally registering an "assault weapon" in NJ however, I would not count on any help from the NJSP Firearms Unit in doing this.

If you are interested you can call them at (609)882-2000 and inquire.

It can not be sold in state either. It can be sold out of state and it is recommended that the transaction be done FFL to FFL to cover yourself.

Your Beretta magazines at 15 rounds are perfectly legal as long as they are pre-ban and not marked LE/Restricted.

A Glock 17 hi-cap at 17 rounds is illegal w/o being blocked and I'm still not presently sure of what the NJSP will accept as a "legal" block. It all depends on what day of the week it is in Trenton and who you ask! :)

Like stated above, no one here is trying to give you a hard time but the NJ law on these issues can be complicated and it is easy to be in violation w/o actually knowing. That of course is no excuse.

If you call the Firearms Unit, ask them to send you a copy of the manual that they put out covering all that has been discussed here. I'm sure you will find this interesting and confusing reading for many hours.
