What happens when you press a gun into an attacker's body?

Sort of, but not really. There is lot of bullet technology that wasn't on the market 20 years ago.
Gelatin tests are great, but I am just not sure they measure the effect of introducing high pressure gas into the wound very well.

I don't know of many bullets on the market that haven't been around in some form or another for at least that long.

There's nothing really different other than the marketing

They are still mostly copper jacketed lead projectiles that follow the laws of physics

It likely does not correlate very strongly for that purpose. Still, I don't know of any other media that would give us a better picture and the differences *should* leave the gelatin showing a more dramatic cavity than real tissue due to gelatin being less elastic. I also believe that if the high speed isn't showing a significant stretch cavity, then there probably just isn't one.

Dead meat is less representative of living tissue than properly prepared gelatin for projectile testing so I see no reason that discrepancy would be reduced for measuring the effect of gasses.

Rather than view this as a direct simulation of the effect of a muzzle blast at contact range (I agree it is unlikely that it is accurate in that respect), think of it as a general demonstration the fact that there simply isn't all that much gas expelled from a .38 spl. At least not nearly enough to have the sort of effect indicated by urban legend. It is also worth noting that the effects seen in this demonstration are roughly consistent with the anecdotal reports of observations of crime scenes by members here and on other forums where we are discussing the same topic. That is to say that when a pistol with relatively low gas volume and pressure is used, there is no remarkable difference in a wound from contact with the muzzle versus a few feet away.

I plan to set up a similar test but use a .44 mag revolver next time. I expect a dramatic difference.
