What do you use for targets at indoor ranges?

i print bulleye targets on 8 1/2 X 11 paper for sight target practice.

for point shooting self defense practice, i use any junk mail ads 8 1/2 X 11.

Pages out of magazines make good targets. With large advertisement header print- you can shoot a round of HORSE (similar to basketball game) by shooting the letters with a friend. Also, you can shoot at the ads that show some mall ninja sporting the latest whizbang gotta-have gizmo.

Targets

The range where I shoot does not allow targets brought in from the outside. You have to buy and use theirs. 50 cents a target. I'm sure it is a financial thing to help them stay in business.

I tape an aspirin tablet to the cardboard and shoot that. I used to put it out at 50 feet, but it took too long to run the stand in and out for each shot. Nowadays, I bring in a jar of flies and let them fly downrange. :p

Seriously, I'll second the guys who use a plain 8 1/2 X11 sheet of paper. Best all-around target there is, and cheap, too. If I want something fancy I bring a Sharpie to the range. If I don't have any paper, I'll draw on another target that someone else has thrown away.

If I were doing some serious training for competition, I'd buy an official target. Of course, I'd probably photocopy that.

Pictures of my ex-wife. (kidding!)

Be careful. The following is a true story.

I once owned a very large ranch and became embroiled in a very bitter divorce with my soon to be ex-wife. She left the ranch and went back to another house in the city that we owned. I had an outdoor shooting range at the ranch and one day a friend came over with a life-sized target that had a cartoon drawing, mounted on a piece of plywood, representing the soon to be ex-wife and at the bottom of the target was printed, "Gimme the deed to your ranch." We laughed and had a good time shooting hundreds of rounds at the target.

The next day I had to go on a business trip and when I returned home several days later, I had received a summons to appear in court. I called my attorney and both of us appeared in court at the appointed time. Keep in mind that my attorney was charging $300 per hour plus travel expenses and even billed me time for the phone call I made to him.

Seems my ex-wife came snooping around while I was out of town, found the target and was claiming I was practicing to "put a hit on her." I had to sit silently in court to listen to her attorney rant to the Judge how I had an arsenal of firearms which should be removed from my possession and I should be kept off the streets for the safety of his client.

Right about now you are probably saying, what a crock of BS. It took my attorney a long time to prove otherwise and that the soon to be ex was just looking for ways to grab everything she could.

The bottom line is that it cost me several thousand dollars to defend myself against stupid allegations made against me because I put up a target to have some fun with.

For those getting out of relationships, I can fully appreciate what you are going thru but do not, I say again...do not put up anything to shoot at that can be misconstrued as your soon to be or ex significant other as it can cost you more trouble than you can ever imagine.....as stupid as it sounds.

Just do a Google search for "free targets". That should keep you busy. Then just download your favorites and print them out on plain 8.5x11 inch paper.

3 x 5 index cards, with a 1" orange dot in the center.

Works at any range out to 25 yards, where my old eyes are having a hard time with it...but I can still hit it if I concentrate.

As someone once said... Aim small, miss small.

Targets

When I shoot my 22's I use Kingsford charcoal briquettes and used shotgun hulls. Mostly paper for the other calibers.

Targets?

Plain old cardboard from the dumpster and a big fat sharpie pen. That way I get to use my knife and my pistol at the range. :D

No kidding.

I know a person who was fired for posting a CHL qualification target and writing names of coworkers on some of the bullet holes. It was done in jest but it was still very foolish. Someone complained and that was all it took. Instant walk out the door.

Holy cow!

That's almost like watching a Hollywood movie just to read that. Can I have the script rights?

WOW!

Seriously, sorry to hear that, you seem pretty genuine in your word's, and I believe you, it's pretty hard to make up something like that.

I shoot at a military range (Camp Allen, in Norfolk Virginia), and I buy their slightly overpriced targets just to help their cash flow a little bit.

Membership is only $80/year with no additional fees whatsoever no matter how much I shoot, and they even let me bring guests and occupy more than one lane without charging us. I reload my own ammo, so other than the targets I buy and the occasional accessory or gun rental ($5 for as many different pistols as you want to rent / $10 for as many rifles), they're just not getting very much of my money. The range, like the commissary or Exchange, is a great resource for military members so I don't mind supporting them rather than always bringing my own targets.

(I do love my full-color 3-D zombie targets from www.letargets.com, though.)

I drew a outline of a man in Autocad and I plot them out 22" x 34" on the plotter at work. I keep it simple so I dont use too much ink. For smaller targets, I simply drew 2 bulls-eye's on a 11 x 17 sheet of paper.

PhotoShop provides all the graphic tools for making targets, circles, grids, squares, blocks diagonal lines, whatever. I get obsessive about some of the patterns I come up with. WAY less expensive than buying packs at a shop.

There's always the "International Red-Neck Standard 9" Paper Plate." The cheap ones at the "Dollar Store" come 100 in a pack for 99 cents. 9" dia. interior circle is 6" I think. I draw an X on them with a felt marker pen. They're stiff enough that they hold together.

These are rifle targets, but some work for handguns too.

I've been thinking doing of that, I never have seen anybody do "it":D before, but it seems like a good idea.

4" x 6" inch index cards and a sharpie or pack of dots for writing prices on at garage sales. Bought a pack of 1000 about a year ago and am slowly working my way through them. They are stiff enough that wind does not effect them to badly. Paper Plates, as mentioned earlier, are also a great choice.
