What do you carry and why

I feel under gunned. I carry a 5 shot 357 Mag (Rugar SP101),with 10 rounds extra. Maybe I should think about carrying my 45 or 9mm. What do others think about my choice.

Panamint,
I think you should carry what you can use most safely, effectively, and efficiently.

I carry .45s - usually one at a time. I've been known to have three .45s on or about my person. But the "jump out of bed" gun is a S&W Model 28 (.357) with a 6" bbl.

I've also been known to carry a Glock 34 (9mm, medium-long slide) - but I prefer the 1911-style because of habit and prejudice.

YOU should carry what works for YOU - not what some guy like me tells you is "right".

'Round the house, I rely on two 12ga pump guns.

Stay safe.

Hard to go wrong with a .357, Panamint! Depending on how the mood strikes me (somedays you feel like a wheelgun, somedays you don't), I have my Magnum Carry in either a strong-side paddle or an ankle rig.

When it is actually cold enough to wear a real jacket (I'm originally from MN, and this TX weather kills me), one of my P14's, also strong side.

Normally, however, in this desert my Glock 27 (damn, I hate Glocks...why do they have to work so well) ends up clipped in the inside pocket of my jeans jacket.

Extra ammo? If revolver day, a Bianchi speed strip in one of those nifty Dillon cases on the belt. Para? Extra mag, weak side hip. G27? Extra mag in a carrier, in the other side inside jacket pocket with my wallet. Slow to reload, but balances nicely.

I am, however, embarassed to mention what may soon become my backup to my backup weapon. NAA .22LR revolver. Cute little bugger, wore it in the front pocket of a pair of sweats and forgot about it. Don't know what good it would do, but very entertaining.

PS why do I carry? Had this discussion with a fellow wage slave a few weeks ago, after he accused me of wanting to shoot someone. My theory: weapons carry (and martial arts training) is sort of a just in case thing...I pay for insurance, too, and don't plan on having my house catch on fire or my wife wrap my car around a tree.

Gl :pck G26, IWB, ten rounds in mag. No extras. Reason is concealability and that's all I can sometimes carry. Got to make it count.

Quite a few folks here know I carry an officers mod. colt loaded with Rem. 185+P HP and why. It's just a handy hideable little plinker! I don't carry any extra mags when i'm in the tub.

Howdy all,

I'm new here and have been lurking for a week or so, great discussions you folks have. Particularly enjoyed the 'Ms. Magazine' battle. What a great distillation of the common arguments (and their common counters)you run into on both sides. I've pointed more than a couple people there to familiarize them with the topic before I get into discussions. Too bad at the end there it's mostly just the pro folks talking it over...the anti's seem to have packed it up and gone home ;). I got the feeling most of the pro folks never got out of second gear for the entire debate.

As for the carry thing:

HK USP .40 [variant 1] / Kramer IWB / 1 spare mag if I can (depends on the clothing) - both mags are 13rds.

Used to load CorBon 135gr. +P, just switched to 180gr. Winchester Black Talon. Might switch to 165 or 155gr. (is there a 155?)Ranger SXT soon (just to be out a little farther off the 'nutcase' radar screen of any defense attorney I might end up across from).

I'm also planning on retiring the HK to the bedroom (after I put a Wilcox Beamer vis/IR flashlight and PT night sights on it) and switching the carry to a Glock 29 in either a SideArmor or Mitch Rosen ARG IWB. Strong side hip, or occasionally SOB.

I would add to that that firearms carry (and training) also teaches respect, patience, calmness in the face of adversity, self-reliance, confidence in your ability to control your actions in the most extreme moments and (most of all) responsibility for those actions.

Why carry? I'm a fairly liberal guy (don't throw the stones just yet ;) ). In most issues, I tend to forge a left-leaning profile. One thing I try to keep is an open mind. I listened to arguments from pro and anti gun folks (back when I was an anti...for no reason other than that's what the people I hung around believed, therefore I believed...by some kind of social osmosis), and found the anti's arguments lacking in substance. The pro arguments I was presented with were calm, rational and took into account aspects of the issue that had never even crossed my mind. The anti arguments were emotional, irrational under scrutiny, narrow- and closed-minded and based in fear.

I can also respect pure pacifism. Someone who is absolutely unwilling to add to the level of violent energy in the universe AT ANY COST. Even the cost of their own life, or those they love (the latter being pretty hard to swallow). It's a poignant statement, albeit a utopian one. To ask others to take up the banner of pacifism in this time is asking a bit much, let alone to demand it of them.

However, that being said, if you feel that it's OK for someone who means you harm to receive harm in order to prevent you (or your loved) from being harmed, you're no pacifist. It's assinine to expect someone else to do it for you. Would you defend yourself? If you say 'yes', get a gun. It's polar: full-on pacifism or get armed. If you believe there should be a police force to protect your ass (and the asses you love), then get your ass in gear and take some responsibility.

That's why I carry. I hope I never have to hurt anyone. I wish we could get some education and rational drug laws and try to relieve some of this deep deep poverty, but here comes mr. bad guy and he's gonna kill you -- right ****ing now, not after you get your education, or your social justice, but right NOW. It would shatter my life. But if the situation reached that extreme, it's going to be shattered anyway. I'll take the shot...maybe all 27 of 'em ;).

PS: anybody know anything about the legality of carrying Black Talons? How about if you actually had to let go with one of those things? I know the lawyers will have a field day with you..but anyone with any actual legal briefs or the like?

Depends. I carry quite a variety...

When I'm in shorts & a T-shirt, it's normally either a P7M13, a Kahr K9 or, and don't laugh, a Taurus TP-22.

When I'm wearing a jacket, it's most likely either the P7M13 or my personal favorite, my S&W Model 19 2.5" That is what will be going under the jacket when I walk the dogs this evening.

Very, VERY occasionally I'll carry a Beretta 92, but that's one big honking piece of weapon. Don't like to carry it too much...

KelTec P-11 W/CorBon 115+p in a DeSantis iwb.
One extra mag w/Golden Sabers
...or...

KelTec P-32 w/ fmj/Silvertips alternated
One extra mag w/same mix

One small pocketknife in off pocket

Knock twice. Rap with your cane. Feels nice. You're out of the rain. We got your skinny girls. Here at the Western World
from Steely Dan's "Western World"

Cocked and locked USPc .45 in blade-tech IWB with spare mag. Someday I'm going to get a smaller gun for summer carry. I keep a cell phone with me, too.

In the socialist republik of Wiskonsin, it's illegal to carry concealed....

So I carry a S&W 4006 in a strong-side belt holster, along with 2 extra mags (total of 30 rds). Mags are loaded w/Black Talons (also illegal here) and wad-cutters in a staggered load.

If I'm gonna be illegal, I may as well do it right! ;)

I will NEVER submit to the gov't telling me that *I* or a loved one must DIE at the hands of a goblin in order to satisfy their socialist laws. Screw 'em.

When guns are outlawed, I'll be an outlaw... Hey, I guess I already AM! Cool....

At work:
Plain-jane Kimber 5" custom classic S/S. W/ Wilson 8 round mag
1 10 round Wilson mag for a spare.
Off work:
Same thing.

Glock 27 w/spare 15rd hi cap. Belly band or IWB depending on my laundry situation and the weather.

I carry for protection and as a political statement.

Well, it depends.

Most days I carry a Kimber Pro CDP :D in a IWB shirt tuck or belt slide.

Warm weather a Glock 27 either IWB shirt tuck or in Rt front pocket.Shoulder holster under a loose shirt too.

Out walking in the woods either a 3" 629 or a cut-down Marlin 45-70

If all else fails, I have an Am. Derringer in 44 Mag  in my front pocket.

Spare ammo as circumstances allow. Usually one mag or speed loader.

I carry for insurance and because it REALLY upsets the libs.

Rick

Guns cause crime like trailerparks cause tornados.

Sig P229, one spare mag (25 rds total .40), because as someone else said, the 229 has devoured everything I fed it without a hiccup, and the LAST thing I want is a misfire in combat, I'd rather have my old Python and 6 .357s. Let's not discuss the rig or frequency since my carry is illegal for another couple months. Bride carries S&W Airlight (337?) with 5 on board and no spares, close-up and personal defense only, since her carry is also currently a "bad" thing her coworkers can kiss her ass and die alone. She'll take care of herself only. 5 .38 +P Corbons at 3 feet or less oughta handle that. If not, my bad, and I'll be the one suffering for it.

(edit follows)

By the Bye, Mr. Fedman or others, I post so boldly because I (and my bride) are completely prepared to fight you all the way to the Supreme Court. You don't like it? Come and get me. I have the time, I have the resources, and I have the immaculate background. I dare you.

Larry P., I'm so tired of you tiptoein' around- why don't you tell us how you really think?

What do I carry? It depends. Most often S&W Model 36, 125 grain Gold Dots. On occasion, Model 60 with either 110 grain Winchester .357 JHP or .38 +P 158 grain LHP. The only rig I've tried that seems to work for this Houston fatboy is the Pager Pal.

For an always gun, NAA mini in .22 WMR, front pocket.

I've had a serious crush on 1911's since I first fired one some 30 odd years ago. Therefore, sometimes for a "travel gun" I'll put my unaltered 1991A1 commander in the glovebox. The only time in over 3000 rounds that it's malfunctioned was with some really bad ammo. And I can hit with it!

I try to practice with all my handguns on a rotating basis.

Most of the time I carry a Glock 26 with a spare 10rd mag, in a nylon IWB (spare mag in the watch pocket of my jeans.) Sometimes I feel like carrying a whole box of ammo, and I pack my Glock 22 with 15+2 mag in the gun, as well as a 15+2 and a PC 10rd as spares in a Bagmaster belt pack or a DeSantis strongside paddle and spare mag holder.

On those days when the mood calls for a wheelgun( such as today), I'll be lugging my new Taurus 606 with two speedloaders and two speed strips in the same Bagmaster belt pack.

My "always" gun, independent of primary armament: NAA Mini-Mag in .22 WMR, in a pocket holster riding in my front pocket.

I carry because I don't feel like being a victim, and because it gives me a sense of confidence and peace of mind. Also, the gun grabbers hate it. I am legally carrying (and my home state thankfully has reciprocity with 12 others), but I will carry into states that don't allow CCW. My right to life and self defense is more important than some pol's seat in congress. "If you can't point to a victim, no crime has been committed."

Thanks Hank.

I've looked into the Black Talon thing a bit since I asked and have found some info. Looks like there aren't any federal statutes prohibiting you from owning, carrying or using (god forbid) the little monsters. But there are state and/or local ordinances that make you the bad guy for having them. So check your local rulebooks.

Same thing for LEO ammo that was never for sale the common folk - - ie. the new Ranger Talons. You can buy and shoot them as long as your locale allows it.

Although I'm sure the lawyers (and the media)would chew you up and spit you out for shooting someone with LEO ammunition. For what that matters.

(disclaimer: I'm an idiot, and no lawyer. Don't trust me to do your homework...but if i come across more info on this, I'll let you folks know)
