I know this gets rehashed every once and a while but I thought I would ask anyway. What weapon do you normally carry and why. Also how much extra ammo? Do you use different weapons for different stuations or locations.
Lately I have been carrying a colt 1991A1 commander with two extra mags. If it is colder I carry my glock 17 with a total of 52 rounds. For deep conceal I use a colt Defender.

Beretta 92FS. 100% reliability with any ammo, not so big that I can't conceal it, and it can handle +P+.

I own nothing but 15-round mags for it. I usually carry in a Jackass rig with 2 spares.

Kimber Ultra Elite with a Wilson Combat Sharkskin IWB holster or Wilson Close Quarter Battle with Mitch Rosen ARG IWB holster. I carry one extra mag. 185 gr Corbon JHP in the Kimber and 230gr Federal HS in the Wilson. Why? Because I love 1911's and most comfortable using them. The Kimber is great when the weather gets on the warm side. The Wilson is great when I can wear fall, winter and spring attire. The .45 ACP IMO is the ideal defense round.

Two 1911-pattern .45s. Para-Ordnance P-13 and Springfield Armory Ultra-Compact, carried in paddle holsters, with which I'm still experimenting to find the best for me. Hydra-shoks in both.

The 1911 system works best for me, the Para-Ordnance being the weapon I trust most and shoot most comfortably/accurately.

Taurus pt 100, with laser sight and comp for winter carry only. Summer carry is a Springfield P9 in .40. I carry 2 extra mags the taurus is 11 rds the P9 only 10 rds.
I believe you should carry full size if you can. The taurus got too bulky with the add ons for anything other than large jacket carry. I picked the P9 because it was thinner, but I still got the double stack and it felt right in my hand.

Geez Coinneach, that's almost a full box of ammo. That's what I call prepared.

I carry a USP Compact 9mm. Sometimes fanny pack, sometimes IWB-right-rear, with jacket I use a Galco Concealable holster.

I typically do not carry extra magazines but after reading this thread I feel inadequate...

Almost forgot, I carry because I can and it's my right. For me and my family, it's simply insurance. Wouldn't you want some insurance?

As I write this, a Smith 3913.
If it's good enough for Louis Freeh,
it's good enough for me.

I did forget to mention that my Baretta sometimes takes the place of the Glock. Guess it depends on my mood. Oh and CMOS when I have the glock it is more than a full box of ammo. With three 17 rounders and one one in the pipe I have 52. I figure if I ever really need more it is time to pray to God and hope I die quick. I carry the extra mags as much for clearing Jams as anything else. Although it does give me some extra secure feeling. and since I carry the extra mags either in the shoulder rig or on my weak side on my belt, they are not in the way. It is kind of like having a V6 instead of a 4 cylinder car. Both get you there but the 6 gives you a little extra "just in case"

I usually carry a S&W model 640-1 or model 49. I almost always carry them in a strong side belt holster from El Paso Saddlery, Bianchi, Galco, or Don Hume. The gun conceals well under a loose t-shirt or untucked casual shirt. It is also very fast and comfortable. Sometimes I use a Milt Sparks Summer Special, a Kramer IWB, or a Milt Sparks Pocket Holster. I usually carry four Bianchi Speed strips in various pockets for a total of 24 reloads along with a ColdSteele folder or two.

In Winter, I often carry a 2 inch S&W model 64 in a Bianchi or El Paso Saddlery strong side hip holster, and occaisionally a 4 inch S&W model 10 or 19 in the same type holsters. These K-frames I carry when the weather is cool enough for a vest. With this arrangement, I carry my routine 24 rounds in the Bianchi Speed Strips along with two more in the vest pockets and two Safariland speedloaders, also in the vest pockets.

A Colt Govt. .380 with Hydrashocks and a couple of Glasers on top of the mag. Seems a little inadequate in such robust company. Guess I'll strap on my Commander today if I'm gonna keep posting here! :D

I only carry pepper spray

Can't carry in IL. It would be nice to carry an AR around though

P7 in a Galco SOB with Corbon, no extra mags. I used to compete with a Govt. model but the P7, for the real world, is just too good and safe not to carry. It is the most accurate and fast to use pistol that I've ever fired. I'm a convert and working on getting all models of the P7. I'm short the M10, M13 and the .22 conversion for the K3. Yes, I know they're clunky.

I live in Illinois too, but I carry a Benchmade Mini AFCK w/ M2 combo edge in my strong side front pocket. I also carry a Surefire 6P (good for blinding BGs).

MissD, Time for you to go knife shopping!

H&K USP .45C w/230gr Federal Hydra-Shok in a Kramer IWB, spare mag w/GI ball, Surefire 6P, Motorola Star-Tac cell phone.

On Duty: M9 (Berreta Mod 92 for you civilian types) ;)
Spare 15 rd magazine

Off Duty: BHP/.40 in a Galco IWB.
Federal Hydra-Shok 135gr.
Spare magazine - depends on what I'm wearing.

It depends on time palce & attire. Most often SIG 239/9mm in jackass rig, 2 spare mags. I'm big & it just disappears under a jacket or vest, and I've gotten pretty good with the 239. Sometimes I go with SIG 228 in MTHG BS-2 strong side, high & tight, hides well under a baggy sweatshirt or sweater or suitcoat. When discretion is a must, Beretta Tomcat in MTHG pocket holster. Always have a blade, usually a BM mini-AFCK or Stryker.

It depends on my mood...

I've gotten a severe case of 1911itis and have been carrying:

1. Colt M1991A1 Compact
2. SA Champion Stainless
3. Kimber Poly/Stainless Target

My Glock 23 is mainly doing bedroom duty with an M3 taclite. I badly want a Scherer 30 round mag in .40, but haven't been able to locate one.

On those occasional light days, I slip a Taurus 85UL into the pants pocket.

Why? Because I can.

On duty, an issued 4506-1, in a Safariland SS III, backed by a 442 in Wild Bill's pocket holster and a Benchmade.
Off duty, a 457 or the -06, depends on the mood, sometimes with the 442, depending on where I am, and the Benchmade. Off duty stuff rides in Wild Bill's concealment leather, or when necessary, Galco fanny pack for all the trimmings (cuffs, light, spare mag etc). Carry one to two spare mags, speed strip for the 442. I carry the big gun because it is issued. The smaller one because it works like the big one, our department uses it, I get free maintainance, my department supplies free .45 to practice, same mags. Something else to keep in mind, if it is ever used, I am not out a ton of cash on the gun. After a shooting, it is seized as evidence. So the department can give me a new 4506, no cost to me, and the others were economical decisions. They all work to my satisfaction.

Colt 1991a1 with seecamp DA lower in stainless /parkerized 8 shot chip mccormick mag, 2 spares in an uncle mike's slimline velcro pouch.. pistol rides in a galco slide holster. I just 'carry" in competition for now.

Other options are the same rig with a commander sized 1911 or a FEG hi-power clone using all the same equipment.

Dr.Rob

I feel grossly under-carried after reading these posts, but, for what it's worth . . .

1. travel gun (car or truck for trips): Glock 17

2. "kicking around" gun: .45/.410 single-shot; damn thing's so heavy that I could use it as a billy club to boot!
