Having all the calibers listed except 10mm and neglecting my 357 mags for about a year. It struck me I might be using a little over kill with a 40 S&W carrying 14 + 1 and a gun light on the rail. I might be better off using my 2.25 inch DAO SP-101 in 357 mag that sports a Crimison Trace laser grip less complicated and more straight forward.

This is not to find out which caliber is better or what you would carry conceled on the street, but what you actually use on your night stand.

Thanks for the help in advance.

I usually carry a 40 semi auto during the day so 40 caliber is what ends up beside the bed. In addition, any handgun that spent the day downstairs will be placed beside the bed at night. So there are always two and sometimes three handguns beside the bed. That's not counting what my wife may have on her side of the bed.

Gun nut? Hardly. It's the people without guns that are nuts.

When I go to bed, my carry gun, spare ammo and Surefire light come off my person and are placed next to the bed. Lately that's a 12+1 .40 S&W.

My "nightstand gun" is a Glock 17 equipped with a TLR-2 (light/laser combo). My "behind the door gun" is an AK with a light.

Why on earth would your .40 w/light be overkill? That's a much more logical choice than a snubby.

This is the snubby:

I have a Mossy 590-A1 that I use for home defense. I have an XD9 4" with 17+1 rounds of Winchester Ranger 125gr.+P+ to back that up. If that doesn't do it I must be at war.

If I leave a handgun out of the safe overnight (which is about 2 steps from where I sleep) it's usually whatever I was carrying that day. That can mean anything from a J-frame to any of my subcompact/compact/full-size guns ... and more often than not that usually means one with night sights.

I didn't pick a caliber because it varies on any given day.

The last time I remember temporarily prepping a long gun was when I heard about a local SWAT team being involved in a shooting with some growers in the hills some miles away, and reportedly one of the suspect shooters had escaped and was last known to be heading in my general direction through the hills.

Not something I normally worry about each night ... and fortunately my children are grown and gone.

.357sig; the answer to the question no one asked...

I voted for the .357sig. ;)
I do not own a .357sig pistol but would buy & carry one on duty if my state regulations allowed it.
The .357sig is highly rated by US law enforcement & federal agencies but not very popular with many US gun owners.
I think the increased use & sales of the older .40S&W caliber rounds pushed the .357sig back. Fair or not, the .357sig lags far behind the larger .45acp, the 10mm and .40S&W.
I think it's top feeding-cycle, firepower(# of rounds) and higher KE level(level of FT/LBs) shows it's merit but the US shooting sports/firearms industry is slow to change and hard to impress. :(

....Needs to be a multiple-option poll.

It depends on the day. The primary is 9mm, but others are known to inhabit the "quick access" location, including .327 Federal and .380 Auto.

.45 Auto in a 3" Springfield G.I.

It also doubles as my carry gun.

There are also loaded .357 Mag, 9mm, another .45, and .41 Rem Mag pistols and a 20 ga. pump within easy access.

We have two guns next to our bed, a Beretta 96 .40 S&W for me, and a Bersa Thunder .380 for my wife. My wife doesn't like my Beretta, but she's a pretty good shot with her Bersa.

We also have quick access to an Ithaca 37 12 gauge in case things really get bad.

Glock 32 357sig

This is what I keep on my nightstand. I know its not the most popular round, But shes a great shooter. Its a Glock 32 and its sporting a Strealight TLR-1s.
I also have a Glock 23 barrel for it.

Same thing I carry, 45GAP. Powerful, effective, accurate and most of all, very fun! Leads to more practice/better shooting/more enjoyment all wrapped up in one stubbie little cartridge. ;)

For things that might go bump in the night I keep a 12ga 870 handy. But so far, I've never picked it up to investigate anything in the house.

If I really think someone might be there I have no intention of trying to clear the house by myself.

I put a premium on subsonic and (relatively) ear-friendly calibers for HD use, no sense suffering hearing damage when there is no need to do so. Therefore my primary handgun is a 45 ACP revolver, backed up with a .38 special.
