If you want a power increase get a 7mm Magnum, .300 Winchester Magnum or a .338 Winchester Magnum.
What beats a 308

I'm a 30-06 guy myself, but... most people and animals couldn't tell the difference. I know I own both. I also have a 7mm mag that was a gift. At first, being a 30-06 guy I took it reluctantly. The first time I took it to the range I fell in love with it. That said, I'm a reloader and I wish it was a 300wm so I could use the same bullets as my 308 and 30-06.
308/30-06 are a couple of those cartridges that do everything well. They may not be perfect at everything, but they aren't bad at anything. If you just want another rifle I'd get another 308 so you don't need a second ammo supply. If you want bigger go 300 Winchester Mag.. The 300 will send the same bullet as your 308 4-500 fps faster.

I just had to add something about the mass vs velocity comments. If you think velocity is king I'll let you shoot something with my .62 cal cap lock and it's 900g bullet lumbering along at 1200 fps

I am in the middle of getting my MOA sorted out with my chosen load that I'm working on then I'll know the bullet drop off at set distances but the wind is a different ball game totally and with practice on paper and learning to read different wind speeds I'll hopefully crack it out to 400 yards which is a normal maximum distance shot where I hunt. At the end of the day if you have a shot at an animal and don't feel comfortable with the shot and have your doubts then what do you do.......WALK AWAY... better that than chasing a deer for 4 miles thats got a broken leg or worse loosing her/him
