I currently carry 124gr Federal HST in my Walther PPS 9mm. I also have my Walther PPQ M2 Navy loaded with those for use as my HD pistol. They function and expand very well.
Hartcreek: Not everyone likes Masaad (and perhaps not everyone should!), but the guy has a ton of trial experience. I personally think his advice on using home loaded ammunition is sound and anyone who carries hand loads for SD use is taking a risk that they don't need to take.
Will you go to jail automatically for using it? No.
Do you need to put another card in the deck that is almost assuredly stacked against you already with an anti-gunner prosecutor? Also no.
Part of why I carry a gun in the first place is to mitigate risk to my life and liberty, why take three steps forward and one step back with my hand loaded ammuntion.
I mean that with respect of whatever anyone carries of course. All loads beat being victimized or using a stick. just think these days especially legal concerns can't be overstated.
I use 124gr. Hornady HP XTP's in my Ruger LC9. I've tried several 124gr. HP in my pistol, and the Hornady's have never jammed of FTF. Speer Gold Dots are great too, but a little more expensive where I'm at...
If I read the reviews and pick a load, I get frustrated at the gun store because they have a limited selection. So I get whatever 147 gr. JHP they have. Currently I have Winchester Ranger and Federal Premium Hydra-shoks.
I wonder if anyone knows whether, for a given weight and bullet style, one is better than another.
Massive expansion, bullet fragmentation, shallow penetration.
Everything that modern defensive ammunition testers say is the sign of a failed bullet!
Also, where is a denim covered ballistic gel test? That is the common protocol for performance testing of bullets. Kinda think they have a reason for not doing one.
I know a lot of folks have dismissed the reports from back in the 70's and 80's that found the .357 125gr HP load as being the best for one shot stops in actual police shootings.... I don't want to argue that study, but has there been any kind of similar study of actual shootings and performance in 9mm ammo? I have always leaned toward heavier bullets for penetration, but it seems a lot of folks here carry the mid-weight bullet... the 124-ish weight. Is it going to be the best balance of velocity and penetration?
