The one I chose was a Ruger Mk I Target (with the long skinny barrel), 30+ years ago. Wife is not a serious gun person, but did plink with us sometimes, and she liked it, so it was hers.
I've probably used it 10x for every time she has, if not more, but its her gun, and I just borrow it (with permission).
And, yes, the Ruger is a pain to field strip, but so what? 30+ years and hers has been stripped TWICE, and the second time was by the son in law, is nowhere near as smart as he thinks he is, and did it against CLEAR, SPECIFIC instructions not to do so.
Much chastened daughter returned the gun, after numerous requests, all the parts (thank goodness) in a grocery bag. I got it back together and its fine but I shouldn't have had to do it. (and this was BEFORE the Internet and all its helpful advice).
Unless the gun gets dunked, there is no need to take it down to clean it. And if it does get soaked there are ways to completely successfully clean and preserve it without having to detail strip the gun.
I firmly believe the Ruger was never intended to be treated like a GI service pistol, but like the sporting pistol it is. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, and if you don't need to take it apart, don't. It really is that simple.
If I were going to do it again, I might go for the Ruger Mk II, if she had an interest in one. If she likes the Buckmark, get her a Buckmark. IF she wants one, get her a Luger, or anything else. If that's not just the right thing, get her something else, she'll let you know how happy she is, or isn't.
One of our "rules" has been, things you need can be gifts, but they are not
presents. For instance, one cannot give my wife new tires for her truck for her birthday, and have it "count". (wife was kind enough to give me the heads up on that, before I dug
that particular hole..
)
If you've got a spouse/GF that would understand, and
enjoy a gun as a present, by all means, do it!. Even if it makes no sense to you, which gun.
And just FTW, my wife's (self chosen) home defense gun is a double barrel 12ga coach gun. No, I didn't argue, not at all.
