If the chosen mag design is in the public domain. If it is proprietary, you have to pay for the right to use it.

I suppose that could be true. But it nevertheless advances them financially or the cost of the right to use the mags would have no benefit to them if it did not help sales enough to cover any production costs + a profit. This is true even if the advance is only an added option.

Cross compatibility of magazines has to have much more importance than it is given. Note that the new Mossberg has that cross-compatibility going for it.
