walther p99

according to "walther, a german legend" the first p-99 was made in january 4, 1994. titled HLP <hammerless pistol> page 191. this makes it old enough to have had magazines produced for it. the .40cal version was introduced in 1998.

now, having met earl, and done business with him, i doubt that he'd be selling mags listed as "pre-ban" unless there were made prior to the date. he stands to lose way too much otherwise.

not only is earl an importer, he is a walther factory armorer. he deals directly with the factories in germany, not the importers here in the US. now as far as being the only source of legal pre-ban mags, i have found one other source that can trace them back...and it ain't any either mecgar or ky imports.

I too trust Earl's and have purchased 4 P99 magazines from him in the past couple of months. These were the 10 round PC models however. Earl's has excellent service and the few questions that I have asked him were answered directly.

I guess Earl's will be where I purchase the 16 round magazines also. If he says his are legal pre ban, I trust what he says.

I am leaning toward the explanation that the 15 round P99 magazines that KY Imports has for sale are NOT P99 magazines but possibly P88 magazines modified.

Kurt Hindle of Walther-USA has been very helpful to me in this and again has offered to assist. He has even supplied me with his direct phone number and has encouraged me to give him a call on this matter.

My question has always been and still is, why all the mystery surrounding the P99 and it's magazines?
If they were in fact mfg. prior to 09.13.94 and are NOT marked RESTRICTED LE/GOVT ONLY then they are legal for sale to anyone who agrees to pay the going price for them.

I concure with P99man. The magazines hold 16 rounds but the holes are done in multiples of 5. Mine do have P99 markings on the base

I just wanted to chime in.

I have my P-99 9mm mag sitting in front of me. On one side, it has the Walther banner and "Cal. 9mm" stamped vertically in the metal. It has three witness holes marked 5, 10, 15.

On the other side, stamped vertically, is "Patent 5.386.657". There are three witness holes marked 8, 12, 16. Towards the bottom is the Mec-Gar name and logo stamped in the metal.

Bottom plate has Walther banner and "P-99" molded boldly. There are no Law Enforcement markings anywhere.

I purchased this mag approximately 3 months ago off Gun-Broker for $82. I have just recently ordered another for $70.

They will hold 16 rounds and function flawlessly, as does this wonderful firearm.

As for Earl, I can tell you he IS the Walther guy for the US. I have bought many walthers from him IN PERSON.

His shop is a museum, I only saw one pistol that was not a walther (a BHP on consignment).

I too have high caps the base plate says P99, the witness holes are marked 5, 10, 15. Made by metgar. No LEO markings and these were bought from earl. See pic

If I was to guess, these might be p88 hi caps with a post ban P99 base plate. so, anybody have a pick or a P88 hi-cap to compare a P99 one to?

So, the possibilities are:

1) Walther-USA doesn't know that there are legal 16 rd. mags for the 9mmx19 P99 available.

2) KY Imports has magazines that they believe are only 15 round capacity because they only count the witness holes not actual magazine capacity.

3) There are P88 mags w/P99 bases on them being sold as P99 pre ban mags.

4) Earl's is the only game in town for factory original pre ban P99 full capacity mags.

Ya gotta love it... :D :D :D

Maybe its a case of "we don't sell any, so they must not exist".

They are only counting the witness holes on one side of the magazine, the other side goes to 16.

I doubt it. Probably just human error.

Earl's is the only game in town for Walther....period. Walther-USA(actually in cahoots with S&W) give out bad-info regularly, and have generally poor customer service.

NMGlocker,

you made me look at my mags again, on the other side of the mag are holes marked 8, 12 & 16! I don't use the hi-caps, so i never until today looked at them closely.

Anyway, the ones I have ARE 16 rounders.... From Earls.

I don't remember who I got mine from. He was a vendor at a local gunshow who had magazines for just about every gun ever made. Mine were both new, still in the packaging. They are 16rnds. They say Walther P99 on the side and on the baseplate, and there are no LEO/military markings anywhere on them.

From what I understand, a P88 magazine wouldnt work in a P99. Any owners of both out there that can check?
Even if they are modified pre-ban magazines from some other gun...who cares, they are still legal and hold the full capacity for the gun. There is no law against modifying pre-bans to fit another gun. Hell, Kel-tec even manufatures an adapter to allow their autos to use *&* pre-ban 13 and 15 rounders.

Holsters?

Glad to see so many P99 fans on this board... What are you all using as holsters? I have a Galco Fletch, but I'm looking for a better concealment holster, either a MOB, or IWB. Anybody have some good reccomendations? Web-sites would be nice too...

tstranik, I am using an Alessi CQC/s belt holster for mine. Too many cheeseburgers over the years to do IWB, but with this holster it is not a problem. It fits so well I can conceal under an untucked polo shirt.

I don't have any experience with IWB so I will let others comment on that.

For P99 holsters, I use:

OWB: PWL's Model 106 and the matching magazine pouch
Model 630. British products, fine leather, with P99 logos.
Both from Earl.

IWB: Kydex holster from Fist.

I just went thru the same dilema as to what holster to get.
I ended up with a Blade-Tech OWB.
and
And a Comp-Tac Undercover for IWB.
I am very impressed with both. Although B-T's customer service blows. If I had it to do over again, i'd go with Comp-Tac for all my kydex holsters.

After being bankrupted by high caps, I have been using the cheapo Fobus paddle holster and mag pouch, with good results. For $17 a piece, I have no complaints.

I carry my P99 in a Milt Sparks Summer Special 2 and find it very comfortable for daily wear.
