VP9 and P30 - Price difference

I was a RO last week for a large gun expo and helped many to shoot the VP9. We had ALOT of guns to choose from and demo. The VP9 was very popular and easily the favorite to new shooters. I was asked the price difference question ALOT between the VP9 and P30. My textbook answer was....both guns were developed and priced at different times in a different firearm environment.;)
At $609.00 for the VP9, my shop sells 15 -20 VP9 to every one P30. The real test will be a year from now what the break down in sales will show.
The two most popular handguns at our expo booth by far were the Sig mk25 and the vp9.

FYI, to encourage sales for all the other HK pistols, HK is giving away a free TLR3 light for all HK handgun purchases EXCEPT the VP9. That might suggest the P30 is priced a bit too aggressive in today's market.

One thing I've been mulling lately is what happened to the P320? It's out, though HK seems to have done a much better job at meeting demand with the VP9 than SIG did with the P320, but you don't hear much about it. Do a google search and some user reviews show up, but paltry in comparison to the reviews for the VP9. I'm just curious why no one is biting there.

I would like to try the sig as well. I do think that the most underrated and under marketed striker is the fns series. Especially for the price.

On the P320, I took a look at one the other day and didn't like a single thing about it. I was never a fan of the P250 and the P320 just feels like a recycled version of the same thing with a striker and a trigger that was nothing to write home about. I was excited when I picked up the VP9. I wasn't excited at all picking up the P320, but then I made up for that by looking at a few CZs. :D

SIG didn't send out a 320 for me to review and HK did. Hence the poor sales

Whil I know you're joking, this is actually a valid point. HK seems to have had a revelation that the commercial market is both profitable and at the same time recognizes that gun owners are now getting a lot of their media from YouTube (a mixed bag we all know). Sending VP9s to a bunch of the bigger reviewers was actually pretty smart and a cheap way to reach tens of thousands of people for just the price of a gun.

Yeah, I was joking but as always there's a hint of truth to it. I've been publicly reviewing stuff for a little under 2 years now and that has allowed me to talk to a ton of manufacturers marking reps. One thing you realize is there really are two types --- those that understand youtube and the forums and those that don't; really doesn't seem to be any middle ground.

Really what does it cost a gun company to send out a T&E gun? Maybe $100-150 for shipping and return shipping? Yet instead some companies would rather pay gun mags $10k for a positive article.... I really don't get it. Yes, there's a risk we (.com review folks) will expose some warts like an iffy trigger or sights we may not like but for the most part guns are pretty reliable/accurate these days so risk is minimal.
Example of a company that just doesn't get it---S&W. They won't even send guns to Hickok and he's got over 1 million subscribers. ....and they make good guns! Madness

Agreed. It's probably the cheapest option in terms of customers reached for dollars spent.

Love your vids btw.

had a chance to handle a VP9 yesterday at the gun store. tagged at 699. very nice trigger.

the only reason i sought it out was that i saw it being discussed on the internet as a large improvement over other striker fired pistols.

didn't buy it yesterday, but it's on my radar. glock and SW striker fired pistols are not. you have two main points of interface with a pistol: grip and trigger. if either is lousy, i keep looking.

well done HK (this coming from a Colt/SW/Beretta guy).

If you are able to, I highly recommend testing out an M&P with a full Apex trigger. If for carry, the DCAEK w/ AEK trigger is spectacular. If for range/competition use, the FSS is basically a 1911 trigger. I prefer the DCAEK myself. The break is like glass on both, but the DCAEK has slightly more pre-travel.

I'm about as close to a die hard HK fanboy as you can get. But honestly while I think it is a very good pistol, I am not sure what it does that hasn't been done. Frankly I find that the extent to which the frame overhangs my hand and the angle of the grip isn't comfortable to me. I really prefer the M&P. The stock M&P trigger has come a long way too. It still has some grit that's a side effect of the striker block, but it has a good break. The advantage I do see with the VP9 trigger is that it breaks further forward, which is nice for people with large hands.

I agree with you, but by the time you add the cost of those parts to the base gun you're over the price of the VP9 locally. Don't get me wrong, what you mentioned is actually my preference currently, but the VP9 gets you very close for slightly less money.

now, if only SW could issue pistols that didn't need aftermarket work.

those apex guys are pretty clever.

While the cost is not a determining factor for me in that I genuinely like the M&P better - although I likely will pick up a VP9 eventually. I was finally able to handle one and while there are still some things I'm not thrilled with(which we've already discussed), I can deal with them or modify the gun accordingly, I think.

Still, the cost of my M&P is cheaper than I have seen any VP9's for.

M&P 9mm - $419
DCAEK - $93
AEK trigger - $40

TOTAL - $552

I also added Trijicon HD's of course, but that price is not a consideration, as the VP9 would get them as well. The cheapest I've seen VP9's is $599.

I've never seen factory new M&Ps for that low a price. Locally I can find them for $500 and by the time I ship one online and pay for the FFL it comes out to about $490. If you found a great deal that's awesome (tell me next time lol) but my calculation was based off of what I determined to sort of be an industry average. I'm also not including any cost of labor. Now you and I and a large number of people can do it ourselves no problem, but there may be those that can't or don't feel comfortable in doing that and a smith would probably add another $60 or so to the total cost.

419 for a brand new MP 9? Is that an LE discount? I have seen them for as low as $470.

I was able to get my VP9 through the HKPRO group buy and my LE model with the night sights and 3 mags was 623. I know that isnt the norm, but I doubt any MP is going to beat that.

Nope. Not an LE discount. GunBuyer.com has them for that price right now. The most I've ever paid for any of my (standard) M&P's is $439. I can usually find them for less. I paid more for my Pro Series of course.
