Used Llama or New Hi-Point??

I have a choice of a really used Llama Max 1 .45 .......or a brand new Hi-Point .45........those are the two choices.....no others.

Walt got it right but that is not what you want to hear. If I were you I would get the Llama then save up for a REAL gun.:barf:

Simple, neither one of these are real handguns! Nothing more than a kinda of CrackerJack prize, a sorta of toy guy, a part time ignition device disguised as a real handgun. Handguns are very, very cheap to make, especially in Spain or Taiwan. Both of these can get you killed by failing to fire when you need it too. Take your $200 and get a real, dyed in the wool proven shooter, any used S&W or Ruger revolver.....

Dear God here we go

A good used smith and wesson revolver police trade-in is far superior. By all means buy one of those...

It's your money, and when it comes right down to it, it's your choice, BUT; why not look at a Ruger P90 or P97(exellent pistol!)... they are a little lower priced than most .45's, but they are by no means "cheap". I'm sure you could find either of these used, at a very reasonable price.

If choosing between those two, I would get the Llama, but make sure it hasn't been abused.

Take the llama, they really are a pretty good gun. like most 1911 types they can be tempremental about ammo and mags. and may need some minor tuneing. but most do ok. The hipoint is a class below the llame in my opinion ..hope this helps.

What Walt Sherril said.

There are so many other choices.

Some good inexpensive pistols right off the top of my head:

Rugers
CZ's
Various used police trade-ins (your dealer can order them from places that advertise in Shotgun News) (I recently saw S&W stainless steel autos for $300 at a gun show. They were well used, but very functional.)

Some good revolvers:

Any used S&W.
Rugers.
I personally like some of the older Rossi's (they are about $150).

Llamas are not impressive at all, and neither are the HiPoints.

What do you have to work with money-wise?

Subject says it all. Neither choice is a good one and neither are the better of the two evils. It would help to know what do you have to work with money wise?

I can't really imagine the scenario that has brought you to these two choices. I have seen Llamas that were so bad people destroyed them on the range with ballpeen hammers and one little .380 that got thrown out on the floor and shot to bits with an M1 carbine because it broke 3 times in a row in less than a magazine after being repaired.

Never had any experiece with a Hi-Piont. I had a friend that bought an old Haskell 9mmP years ago and it actually worked ok as long as you did not expect too much from it.

I honestly don't feel good about recommending one of them to you over the other.

For the same money (i would hope that these would be in the $100 - $150 range) you could get a really nice makarov, a CZ70, maybe a Tokarev or a CZ52 or a used S&W 10 if you really shop around. I would personally take any of these over your two listed choices.

Give us an idea of your budget and maybe we can find you something good and solid.

You know, if you are going to buy just the Llama or Hi-point, I say get the one that comes apart the easiest. So when you break it (intentionally) you can save yourself the stress; unlike, when you shoot them!:D

My budget is $200........

....unless I sell my Howa 1500 .223 varmint rifle....but I don't want to sell the Howa because I enjoy callin' and have never owned a handgun before. Speaking of police trade-ins, how would a S&W model 10 be??

My scenario......

........rural.........uh.......even ruraler than what you are imagining, ARKANSAS....my job pays $5.50/hour.......I am married and have two beautiful little girls.....two hound dogs...lots of hills to wander in....and I love hunting and shooting.
Wanted to get into handguns, but if this "warm welcome" was any indication, maybe I ought to stick to rifles....

Budget?

Look in to a .22cal semi or a revolver. You will be able to pick up a nice used pistol in .22 rimfire and be able to afford all kinds of ammo. To shoot a pistol good you need alot of practice. Except for some of the few natural expects out there. markmcj

I really thought your question was a "Trick" question -- we get a lot of those on the forum. Questions designed to provoke a lot of the forum participants.

The Hi-Point is apparently a reasonably competent gun, but its "butt ugly," and awkward in size and weight. They come with a good warranty. But they are STRANGE guns, using the weight of the slide to offset some of the force of the bullet being fired. (That's OK for a .22, but its not a great idea for more powerful rounds.)

The Llama is considered a "junk" gun -- a fundamentally a good design that leaves much to be desired in execution. (Gun Test magazine's latest issue tests a new Llama and similar Firestorm 45 and basically says they are both junk.)

Your best choice is to look for a used S&W, Taurus, or Ruger revolver. They are basically quality guns.

More importantly, if money becomes an issue -- and it sounds like it might, you'll play HELL ever trying to sell the Llama or Hi-Point. There is no resale market. The revolvers will probably get you what you paid for them.

(You can buy a NEW Ruger P-95 for around $225 -- $250. While its not the BEST gun available, it is a rugged, durable, reliable, accurate, and RESELLABLE gun of great value. Wait a bit longer and get one of them...

I'll second a nice .22 pistol or a used revolver. Also if you get a .45 and don't reload the ammo is expensive. .38 reloads can be found relatively cheap. Good luck on your decision. Mark

I'm sorry you feel you didn't get the "reception" you wanted. I think the posters who answered your question gave you their honest opinions. The two guns you mentioned are not worth the $200 you say you are limited to. The two suggestions that were given; get a used revolver (the S&W M10 you mentioned would be a good choice) or a used 22 so you could afford lots of ammo, were thoughtful and well meaning.
You asked for our opinions so don't get upset if those opinions aren't what you wanted. As with all of us, you are free to do what you want.
