2nd the bad sales people...

got a really good gun shop locally... hired help there are awefull... very opinionated ( & their opinons & mine are polar differences apart )... I've noticed that even the owner ( who is quite knowledgable ) has started recommending guns he has in stock, even if it doesn't "best" meet the customers use requirements... tragic, but I guess it goes along with the bad economy & such...

I'd rather see the OP go to 3-4 shops or more if needed & get recommendations... you might get 4 different recomendations or only one... might depend on the brands they sell or not, but go out until you get 2-3 options, then look at, hold, & fire if possible those 2-3 different options, before making the choice

The main thing will be to know if she would shoot a BG if threatened. If she won't, then even a .50BMG won't work for her....

true.. I don't know if she would, or not... I THINK she would, given the option of being harmed, vs harming the bad guy... we've discussed it at length, and she says she wouldn't have a problem with it. Heck, I guess NONE of us knows for sure what we'll do at "that" moment. I've gone over and over mentally what the line is where I'll go to condition red, but thankfully, I've never been tested at it.
I would just like to have all the "equipment" available for her use, should she have to make that call.

hornetguy: Which ranges are you checking? I've had pretty good experiences with the Winchester Gallery and DFW Gun Range. And both places often advertise and/or host shooting classes for ladies.

I haven't been to either of those lately.. I've shot at the Winchester range, in fact, we a few years ago we even rented an auto 20 for my wife to shoot sporting clays with, and she enjoyed that a lot. I've never been to DFW gunrange... I'm on the east side, in Allen, so I go more to the Garland range, and on rarer and rarer occasion, the Bullet Trap. Garland isn't bad, but the BT is where most of the para/cop wannabes seem to congregate. (where is the "rolleyes" smiley when you need it?):D

Maybe I'm missing somthing here but I would show here a S&W model 10.

Longer barrel and sight radius makes it easier to shoot than a snubby and she will already be familiar with how to operate it. Taking the same ammo also simplifies things.
I prefer handguns for home defence because it allows you to have one hand on your gun and one hand on your cell phone/flashlight.

Unless your looking specificaly for a long arm. In which case take here to a few gun shops and let here handle some guns.

Guns I would ask her to try would be a .357 lever action, AR15, Kel Tec sub2000 and the SU 16, Beretta Storm, and Mini 14, M1 Carbine.

Others worth considering SKS, Saiga rifle, Pistol caliber AR15

"All I know is what I play on Call of Duty, and I am deadly with my M16.
600 yard kill zone is hard to get around and it is the most accurate rife I have played with.
I am saving up now to get my M16 in real life " Yes, it is sad, isn't it? That this poor fellow can't be a REAL armchair commando like the REST of us. :D We really don't need to pick on each other, do we?

For lack of a better term... I was thinking that I might be interested in a carbine that would work for home defense and general plinking type stuff, without going the AR route, and its associated expense/price tag.

or for the really budget minded

Picking on him would be calling him out by name in the forum.

If you had read some of his other postings you would understand that this person is just an idiot that likes to spread myths in misinformation.

I was just useing this as an example of how anyone can get on a forum and spread lies about guns because thats how it was in the latest video game they played.

Other "gems of knowlage" that this person felt inclined to share included:
The AK was only good for killing unarmed civilians
And lets not forget:
The M4 was designed for Arabs

Those quotes are from this forum. Sorry but I take firearms seriously (even though they are a lot of fun) and it actually offends me when people act this stupid.
