United Arab Emirates to Control our Ports??

This has been a done deal since Nov. 2005--only recently when some blog sights picked up on it did it become an issue. Please---you or anybody else thinking like you give me 1 solid example of THIS COMPANY doing anything wrong or egregious. It is a highly(most qualified) thought of company around the world for years and years. Let me hear guys----what other company should havce recieved the contract?!

Let me ask some of you fair minded a question---which do you think is most important;
1. Checking the cargo before it gets here
2. Checking after it gets here

As an example--if they got a nuclear device into the cargo there and sent it here--it would be too late once it was here. Say it goes to Miami and it detonates when opened---well goodbye Florida and beyond. Doesn't do much good to discover it once it's here, and that's what you are argueing about. The problem must be stopped there!

Didn't the UAE also recognize the Taliban as a legitimate government before we kicked the Taliban out of Afghanistan? If so, weren't they only like one of three governments to officially recognize the Taliban? That's pretty damning in my book.

US allegations against UAE, Qatar and Taliban on support of bin Laden
United Arab Emirates-Qatar-USA, Politics, 7/9/1999

The United States is "working with the UAE to continue strengthening our counter-terrorism cooperation in many areas, including terrorist money laundering," US State Department deputy spokesman James Foley said.

Foley was responding to reporters' questions about a July 8 New York Times article that cited "United States officials" as saying that the United Arab Emirates and Qatar have helped terrorists wanted by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The Times article said that the United States government "quietly sent senior officials last week to one of the countries, the United Arab Emirates, to lobby for a halt to a suspected financial relationship between a Government-controlled bank and Osama bin Laden," adding that bin Laden was allowed to deal with the Dubai Islamic Bank.http://www.arabicnews.com/ansub/Daily/Day/990709/1999070961.html

To be fair the UAE did break ties with the Taliban on Sept. 22, 2001
UAE snaps ties with Taliban

By Kesava Menon

MANAMA (Bahrain), SEPT. 22. The United Arab Emirates today cut diplomatic ties with the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, asked them to close its embassy in Abu Dhabi within 24 hours and repatriate the staff.

After this swift surgical strike, which followed on the Taliban's failure to hand over Osama bin Laden, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are the only two countries which maintain diplomatic ties with the Islamic outfit in Kabul.http://www.hinduonnet.com/2001/09/23/stories/01230001.htm

So how does the UAE really feel about terrorism and Osama Bin Ladin. They may publicly proclaim support for our war on terror, but they have supported terror within the past decade, so I personally wouldn't want to take the chance that they still might be sympathetic to terrorist organizations. How do you feel?

And I just want to point out a specific line from the second article,
Rich businessmen in the Emirates have been among the foremost sources of funds for the Islamic movement worldwide, including some of its most virulent forms.

GWB said today the goverment already looked into the security issue. HA!

Bill Frist and congress just found out old SNEAKY was gonna close the deal himself. So who is the goverment in America now? Or did we turn it over to the royal Bush family and UAE?

Good answer to the questions carbiner. Everything you have brought up has been shot down. Try coming up with something other then the company being from UAE:rolleyes: You're rambling without intelligence. Sneak---Nov. wrong. King GWB---0, no vetos in office wrong! Get a clue so you can have an intelligent discussion based on facts.;)

This deal included the port of NYC. Why can't we watch our own port? Do we need the UE to come over here and do it for us? NO. GW is not up for election so he could care less who likes or dislikes his decisions. It is not part of the president's job to dictate to the congress.

Next Move

Our President is already made plans to secure our southern border. He is contracting the job of keeping illegals out to the Mexican Government.

Today's WSJ:

"Mr. Bush, who has yet to veto a bill during his presidency, vowed to veto any
bill that would stop the takeover by Dubai Ports World of a British ports
company, Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation, which operates ports in
Baltimore, Miami, New Jersey, New Orleans, New York and Philadelphia. The Bush
administration's Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States quickly
approved the deal, but politicians on both sides of the aisle quickly objected,
and some have called for congressional hearings. America's ports have long been
seen as a security soft spot, and the idea of a company from the United Arab
Emirates running key U.S. ports has several lawmakers up in arms. The Republican
governors of Maryland and New York added their objections this weekend. New York
Gov. George Pataki, who is mulling a run for the White House in 2008, said he
told the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey -- which owns the land on
which the World Trade Center sat -- "to explore all legal options that may be
available to them." Today, Senate Majority Leader Frist (R., Tenn.), another
likely presidential candidate, called for the Bush administration to postpone
the deal and threatened to introduce legislation to do so."

Some may attempt an end run at racism here but I doubt if it's even close.
This Administration has spent tons of $$ conditioning Americans to be on guard for the terrorist and "anyone" who aids a terrorist. We all know this administration's ideal type terrorist isn't some big beach blondie named Sven Svenhardt from Sweden. So is it any wonder that when GWB trys to pull something off base to this extent that the rank and file bolt? He forgets or more accurately denies too often that there are 3 equal branches of gov't. Have you ever noticed that smirk of irritation that he uncontrolably displays when he trys to "dumb down" a concept to the great unwashed (that's us). Coming from him...that hurts!
Personally I don't want anyone but US citizens doing this work. This administration has redefined the term "we've been sold out!"There is some good news for our leader however....Jimmy Carter likes the move! That's gotta thrill him!
Some surveys on this little item are running 3000 to 1.... against! The best he'll get now is a cooling off period before he capitulates to save some real embarrassment.
I've never seen an administration with so many bad balls in the air at one time and no ability or desire to catch.

The best gov't money can buy!

lets see

Two of the 9/11 guys were from UAE

They were one of the nations that formally recognized the Taliban then broke ties after 9/11

They passed fund for the 9/11 guys and the Taliban through thier country.

Once 9/11 hits they cut all ties and get religion. They are now our friends.

mmmkayyyyy.....

Places like UAE and the Saudis are by far the worst to deal with.

1. They will use us for thier own purposes
2. When we are no longer useful to them they will drop us like a hot pan.
3. Muslim history has examples where they exploit thier enemies and use them and make pacts with them while the enemy has the upper hand. Once they gain the upper hand its on....you are no longer a friend.

Anybody here remember the Arab Oil Embargo? Once we are no longer of use to the Saudis and UAE they will cut us loose and be far worse than the Taliban. At least with the Taliban we know where we stand.......

i smell LOTS of cash going into someones private bank accounts over this port deal........ ANYONE ELSE SMELL IT?????????

Hey mow, here's a thought, if they can get a nuke into the states, they can get a pretty little seal to make it look legit. Furthermore, anything gw is pushing should be investigated thoroughly...or investigated...or even read over (unlike the patriot act...). you want to know who should be controlling the ports? how about some americans companies staffed by americans. I don't care if it was run by ae, or soudis, or anyone from 'over there'. Bush has tried so hard to establish the 'us vs them' mentality that it worked. I don't want anyone foreign working in our ports, they're too important and have too much stuff arriving every day to leave in someone else's hands. It's hard enough to keep nukes out as it is, thought we might could use some help, we don't need to outsource this too.

Yep. He gets to walk away from a massive debt and out of control spending too!

*sigh*
You really need to bone up on what lead to that massive debt and out of control spending.
(HINT: It wasn't GWB - it was the other guy(s) before him)
Clinton made such an absolute bollix out of the economy in his two terms, it's no small miracle that we managed to climb out of it as far as we have.

Hay! Ya think GWB would use some of the wealth to pay down the Half TRILLION $$$$$ debt. WE some how owe?
OK - so tell me - exactly where did that debt come from, who owes it and why do they owe it.
(HINT: It's not *WE* as you stated, unless you're including Japan, China, the several individual countries of the Euro , etc.)
Most, if not all the whiners that mention the debt have zero clue. You simply parrot what others cry and whine about (waaah, waaaah, 8 trillion, waaah, waaah).

Places like UAE and the Saudis are by far the worst to deal with
Puh-leaze spare me. The UAE and the Saudis had excellent instructors. (The US/British/French business conglomerates). You can't really fault them for learning their lessons so well. All you can do is play the game and beat them at it.
"1. They will use us for thier own purposes
And we did (and do) what?
2. When we are no longer useful to them they will drop us like a hot pan.
And we did (and do) what?
3. Muslim history has examples where they exploit thier enemies and use them and make pacts with them while the enemy has the upper hand. Once they gain the upper hand its on....you are no longer a friend."
Well, leaving out the American frontier since it's such an easy example,,,, the US has pretty much done the exact same thing.
And guess what? Each and every other nation on earth did and does those exact same things.
The single solitary country in the recorded history of civilization that may be an exception to that, may well be modern Japan. Japan still abides by the results of the peace accord after WWII (for the most part).

squrm--Hey mow, here's a thought, if they can get a nuke into the states, they can get a pretty little seal to make it look legit. 1. You can't get a "seal" to make it legit. It's not a paper seal--it's made of metal with codes engraved--no way to tamper without breaking.
2. Which "American" company was turned down--0--because there is no American company that handles such an operation. Again--same company as when the Brits owned it. Do you know the makeup of the employees of this company?
3. As stated before---it's TOO LATE once the nukes get here(where this company operates) the Nuke has to be stopped from its origin. A sealed crate will do just as well as open for nukes.
