Unbelievable Glock Shot

I don't know about the legality or luck for that shot. Nice shot none the less though. I agree with hunting for food and population control. You can buy a fancy trophy at the sporting goods store. (Now if you tag a nice one for the aforementioned reasons by all means mount it BUT don't hunt for only that reason.)

Valid point about identifying your target! If had been a farmer's dog you brained from the car, I would feel little sympathy about anything done in response by the farmer. (IMHO had you killed Ol' McDonald's mutt AND he decide to make a sequel to Deliverance....you asked for it.)

Overall, I am impressed if the shot was done by talent but still think it would have been more responsible to let that one go until next time.

Yep, coyotes are becoming a problem here in not-so-rural Ohio. Take 'em out if you have a safe shot.

Sounds like a helluva shot!

In AZ it is illegal to hunt anything from a vehicle or shoot across a road, but, the OP and shooter AREN'T in AZ

Judging from the photo it looks to me that they were driving out on agricultural land on private property.

We have similar laws in Oregon against shooting across roads and from vehicles. But they don't apply to any shooting done on private property. They only apply to shooting across public roads and on public property.

So I don't see that anything illegal was done here.

Last question, this shot was taken from inside the truck? Anyone have permanent hearing damage?

Dude, in drive-by shootings, you stick your handgun OUTSIDE the window when you shoot. You can still effectively brace your arm against the door's window opening to help your aim. But the proper technique is to have the handgun completely outside the vehicle.

I made a similar shot to this one several years ago with my Glock 17 while out on a farm in eastern Oregon. Only it was no where near so spectacular. It was just a common cottontail rabbit, and the range was only about 35 yards or so. Still a small target, though, so I was pleased by the kill.

I just rolled down my window, took my Glock out of the glove compartment and stuck it out the window, and then braced my arm against the door to steady my shot.

at 151 yards i would have trouble telling it was a cyote.
what if it turned out to be the farmers dog?

Coyotes look nothing like domestic dogs.

Besides, domestic dogs don't spend their time out in the middle of agricultural fields digging for rodents, like Coyotes do.

At 150 yards, your eyesight is better than average if you can tell with 100% certainty the difference between a small coyote and mixed breed dog that spends most of it's time outside on a farm.

However, I agree about the digging in the dirt for rats. I've never seen a dog digging in the dirt......wait a minute.
:D

Impressive shot with a pistol.

robhof

I hear they taste like chicken, the hides tanned go for $100 to $250 depending on the thickness of the fur. I shoot prarie dogs and I ain't gonna try to clean or eat them. I also grew up shooting rats in a dump and shure never even handled them.:D

EdInk:

Seems to me that you actually have no real world knowledge or experience with Coyotes. They don't look or act anyway at all like a domestic dog.

I'm really quite amazed at all the flak that Shooterspitch is getting over making this incredible shot.

I sure hope that you are not a hunter, if your eyesight is so very poor. I would certainly hate to be in the same field with you during hunting season.

You have also made an assumption that he had no optics with him at the time. There is no way that he could have known that the range was 151 yards to the coyote unless he had a rangefinder with him. That would imply that he would have looked at the coyote through optics at anywhere from 4x to 8x magnification.

It is too bad that Shooterpitch posted this here in this forum. The much better forum for this discussion would have been in the hunting forum.

seeing as how they walked up to it to take a picture I think that maybe they paced it off before the picture or on the way back?

I can't possibly fathom using stock sights to shoot a coyote at that distance, much less compensating for bullet drop. That was one helluva shot.

Not saying he couldn't do it again, but if any criticism were to be had IMO, is the probability of a clean, quick kill using a handgun rather than a proper firearm is poor form. Granted, it's a varmint. But whatever I hunt, I always use the most reasonable firearm to make sure a clean kill happens. Varmint or not, it shouldn't suffer for hours or days on end because of a high probable misplaced shot improper projectile. It's just a responsible, humane thing to do. We are the intelligent ones....aren't we?

The problem I have with this shot is, as was mentioned above me, there are ethical hunting concerns. I can put 9mm on a 3/4 silhouette at 75 yards pretty consistently with my FNP, but I'm covering pretty well the whole target with the sights at that distance. Shorten the barrel, double the distance and halve the size and tell me how you can guarantee a clean kill and maybe I'll feel differently.

Shoot, as I've aged I'd be afraid that it was a dang COW at 151 yards! Stupid eyes going to heck in a handbasket...grumble mumble ....

Anyway, coyotes are vermin. They are survivors and prodigious breeders which has led them to become a destructive force on the ecosystem -- that's why there is no season and no limits. Plus they will eat domestic dogs, cats (a delicacy), sheep, goats and even calves. Not to mention that a pack will kill a deer a day if they can find them.

+1. If I am not reasonably sure of a definite kill I'll pass. YMMV.

That was a sweet shot

I know a guy who ends his training/shooting sessions shooting pop cans with his glock 23 at 100 yards all the time..I can belive this shot..

Heck of a shot young man,Yep there is a difference in hunting & killin but the outcome is the same good shot:D

The biggest vermin overpopulation we have is people. . . but until they start issuing tags coyotes will have to do! :D
