tricks to curb your gun buying addiction

I take my wife to the gun store. Strike that, 2 of the last 3 times we came hone with new pistols. She even let me keep the 45.

When you have no wife to answer to. Only my dog.All my Children are grown up. I get and do what I want and can do. Only been 15 firearms this year so far. I dont' drink, smoke, gamble, or party so I have money. Everything I own is paid for except my house.

Contact all of your local firearms dealers and let them know that they cannot feed your addiction.

Have someone change your password on gunbroker.

Trying to Quit

Other than sharing comments about wanting to quit and reflecting about the cost of a safe or two full of guns, writing about it in a gun foum is like hanging out in a bar discussing the need to cut back a little.

I've had plenty of keepers follow me home from a LGS or gun show but none from a bar.

I always think "While this gun is cool, will I A. actually shoot it (cutting out most of the ones where my interest is mostly collectible), B. afford to shoot it (cutting out the goofy calibers), and C. actually have a role for it in my limited collection (i.e. this is my new CCW, this is for cheap plinking, this is for field carry...)"

It's not perfect, but it helps some.

In all seriousness,,,

It still costs me some money,,,
But not nearly as much as buying guns.

When I read about a gun that interests me,,,
I immediately look for a rental range that has one.

Often just renting a gun and running a box of ammo through it,,,
Is all the exposure to that gun I need and it tamps down the urge to own one.

Every 2-3 months I make a trip to H&H gun store in Oklahoma City,,,
Nine Bucks plus ammo is not prohibitively expensive,,,
And it keeps me out of the bars. ;)

They also rent Class III weapons,,,
Last year I bought an UZI rental and 200 rounds of ammo,,,
This was a thirtieth birthday present for a very good friend of mine.

I don't think his testosterone level has gone down since that day. :)

So whenever I get the Ya-ya's to go out and buy a new gun,,,
I simply go and rent something exotic to play with.

It works for me.

Using vs. Collecting is working for me

I have a pretty long list, and I have already bought 9 since I took up shooting last summer. I found myself just collecting and it felt kind of empty, not to mention expensive. i do have other bills to pay. Now I restrict myself. I have to demonstrate proficiency with each one before acquiring another. For my first two rifles, qualifying for a Rifleman patch at Appleseed satisfied that requirement. And it worked - I didn't really have a feeling for my CZ-455 until I worked with it for a few months to pass the AQT. Now I appreciate its qualities, and how it carried me during the AQT. :D I have some memories with it.

I have an M1 Carbine that is probably not a 4 MOA rifle. I understand some people claim they have a 2.5 or so (Fulton Armory), but afaik nobody has qualified with one. I'll have to think of another way to "earn" that one.

OTOH, I have an M1 Garand that the AQT was designed for. I'll definitely try it at Appleseed soon.

I'm in a Bullseye league, and if I can get 750/900, I'll consider that good enough for the CZ Kadet and maybe then I'll get a Marvel Conversion slide and a red dot and see how much higher I can go.

Not sure what's next. Like I said, lengthy list. I'll see what shows up on the used market. My system is working, but I'm not sure it's sensible. I passed up a GREAT deal on a 1977 Marlin 39m. If I had passed up the previous deal for a Dan Wesson 1911, I'd have been all over it. Wish I had both...

Rambling post.

gun frenzy !

i have not bought as many gun's as i have in the last four years ,i need to stop but as long as we have this president and goverment that is so anti gun i find it a nessity !!!!!!!!!

This might work;

Go buy a gun that you want/have wanted for some time.
Then shortly after, take it to a gun store and ask the person behind the counter how much they will give you for it.

I find with this gun buying "sickness" it's best not to fight it. I'm a family man and the wife and kids always come first. As long as the bills get paid and there is always food on the table, there is nothing wrong with a hobby. Buying guns to me is a hobby. I have a hard time selling guns, I just like buying more. Once I buy one I find that there is at least 3 more on the "buy list" for future purchases. Some people collect stamps........I collect guns. I have found that there is no cure for this sickness........except to buy more guns!!!

Give into your addiction to buying cars. I won't be buying any guns soon. I just bought a 1SS 6 speed. The other half of my plan is to sell my other two cars. Hopefully God is good, and I can bear to part with the 1970 462 cubic inch V8 convertible

See? Money gone now! No gun money

Feed your addiction.............. after the bills are paid of course.

I have a pair of spankin' new LH Mausers on the way from their Serbo-Montenegrin craftsmen that built them. :D

Oooo......... and this weekend I'm ordering up reloading components, rings and bases, a Redding Dual-Ring carbide sizing die for .45 Colt, Redding 3-Die set for .25-06 and.......... uh I better stop. I still have to go moose hunting in September.

Long guns are a non issue for me,If It does not serve a purpose I dont need it.Heavy barrel 22mag bolt gun for back yard varmints and Small game,12ga.
For birds,Deer rifle, Black powder rifle for the muzzel loader season,30 rnd 223 for when the zombies or coyotes attack,a couple of handgun cal carbine's in case I need to arm the niebores if there is two many zombies to handle my self.Hand guns on the other hand was getting out of hand and was getting hard to justify even to my self.Ive alway's saved my change for guilt free money and never pay for anything with change which worked out to be about 600.00 per year so I told myself I could only buy if A) sold one or
B) used my change or both.I improved my plan last year as it was a little restrictive so now I save my ones and never use ones to pay for anything.
So with my change it = about 1800.00 per year, funny thing is I never write a check anymore. Now if I can just keep from saving 5"s I might have this addiction under control.:)

Buy until you run out of money. If your house goes into foreclosure, Obama will save you. Then you can buy more. Once your account and credit is totally drained, you will stop.

Maybe.

I take the spare change fund a bit farther. As mentioned in posts on some other threads I use a credit card for many purchases that has a rewards points program. either Bass Pro Shops, or more recently Cabela's. I also request BPS, or Cabela's gift cards for birthday, father's day, or Christmas gifts. Of course the balance gets paid every month so there is no interest charged that would more than eat up the rewards points money. The bottom line is that many new guns I have bought have cost me way less than normal retail price. Even though sometimes a LGS, or on line site can beat BPS and Cabela's prices, when you deduct three of four $50 gift cards, and use $40 or $50 dollars worth of points the prices are way lower. Probably my best was a Remington 870 Express 18" 7 shot for the grand total, out the door of $0.00 . I just love free guns!!!:D
