Top Shot III - let's keep it about guns and shooting

A gentle reminder - this thread is about the guns and shooting on the show, not about the personalities and the drama.

Anyone know what they put in the balloons to make them explode in a ball of fire? It seems like there is some form of liquid in them from the slo-mo video.

I was thinking it might be something as simple as a little gasoline. The ignition system would have to fairly sophisticated though since a flame would burst the balloon. Maybe some type of continuously sparking mechanism like some gas stoves have - that would be easy to build.

Season Finale ... best episode of all three seasons, IMO.
Good challenges, good shooting, and worthy competitors.

I also watched the "behind the scenes" show that followed.
Man, that dude "Jake" is one sick pup.
Doesn't our military conduct pyscological evauations? :D

It was a good finale. Dustin really demonstrated excellent skills. I was impressed.

I like how the show ended on a note of good sportsmanship.

Glad to see Dustin win.Same as with Chris last year. Both guys was going to put the money towards their kids.

"I noticed that also, griz. I've seen lots of high speed photography of bullets in flight, but nothing like that before. It might have something to do with the humidity level at that particular time and location - not sure. The helical "contrail" was very odd looking."

While I've not seen the show, I HAVE seen contrails made by bullets going down range when air temperature and humidity conditions are correct.

I've also seen pictures of bullets leaving contrails, and they're spiral.

Very glad to see that the good guy won. Actually, they were all good guys (after Jake quit, that is). I'm surprised that Jake has gone as far as he has in life without someone knocking the chip off his shoulder. Hopefully most SEALs are not like that.

Dustin's performance was amazing, and his attitude was great. I don't think he realized how hard it's supposed to be.

One lesson I took from this show is that the shooting sports are for everyone. Yes, originally we had military, LEOs, firearms instructors and even a Navy SEAL, but the self taught hobbyist won. We need to be sure we are always open and welcoming to new shooters, so we can assure our sport flourishes. It always bothers me to be at a LGS or range and see some folks be less than patient with beginners.

It was interesting that Mike Hughes would so thoroughly dominate some challenges and mess up so badly on others (the Benelli slug stage). It reminded me of those Strong Man competitions you see on ESPN 2 where a contestant demolishes one stage, then gets demolished the next.

No one in all three seasons has smoked someone so thoroughly as Dustin smoked Mike in the final challenge. Didn’t matter what they put in his hands, he shot them and threw them (rocks) better than anyone with the best attitude of all in the show. I wonder what the chances are of him getting job offers from some major gun manufactures to shoot on their teams and promote their products and the shooting sport?

AK-47 one hand unsupported? Awesome. I could not do that.

It's almost as if he wasn't prepared for the long gun stuff. "I'm a pistol guy..." So when the long gun stuff came up, he wasn't prepared mentally for it. We all know the guy can shoot. But mentally, he wasn't "in the zone" for that last competition.

Dustin, however, being the ultimate example of the "Empty Cup" philosophy, just went in and had a lot of fun playing with whatever gun was in front of him.

Dustin was always accurate ...... with anything, including thrown rocks. He was not as fast with a pistol as the "Pistol Guys", but, as they say, "Specialization is for insects."

In the final challenge, Dustin and and his 1/2 a dozen mikes beat Mike and his dozens of mikes.

I cringed at that one.
The show runs a disclaimer, but how many times is something like that going to be tried because they saw it on Top Shot.
If they could have even put a additional restriction on it like, OK, we will do this risky shooting challenge but we will make it a point to have only ONE cartridge in the magazine for the sake of safety for all.
The 100 yard ping pong challenge by Dustin was TOP Notch, but it could have been easily done at 200 yards.

As it was, Dustin barely nicked the right side of the golf ball at 100 yards ...... any further and he's have missed.
