Top Shot III - let's keep it about guns and shooting

The best way to train is to start shooting revolver in DA mode only. If you can master sight picture and sight alignment while using DAO what are the chances that using a semi-auto pistol he is going to be better?

pretty darn good....

I would have put my money on the revolver guy to start with.

The bulldog gatling gun was awesome! What caliber was it shooting? It looked like 45-70 since it was pretty long compared to a .45 colt. But it was hard to tell. Also when it first mentioned the 1875 Remington I was really hoping it was the black powder "cap n ball" version. Oh well...

I agree that the Bulldog looked like it was chambered in .45-70 and online sources say that most of them were. It sounded like a very light load, however, and I think the ammo boxes said Buffalo Arms. I also see evidence that there is (or was) at least one manufacturer of replicas so those may have been relatively newly manufactured guns they were using. They sure looked great.

Last night's program was interesting even if the firearms were not what you usually encounter. I too was suprised that Cliff had difficulty hitting consistently with the Remington, and that he violated one of the four rules leading to an unintentional discharge.

I was really surprised to see an unintentional dishcharge on the show. It does seem like the old single action would be an easy gun to do it with. As for the Gatling gun I didn't realize how accurate that thing was for cranking out that many rounds. Aiming it looked like a pain though, kinda like if a etch-a-sketch could shoot bullets.

Its interesting though. Early Maxims etc. had a similar type of wheel control for long range shooting. Idea stolen from the Gatling?

Remember at the time, this was high speed in comparison to artillery, which is what it was viewed more as.

Some sketches I've seen showed a lever arm sticking out from the gun that could move it either up/down or side/side, much like a tripod. Seems a bit more practical for a battle situation.

I thought the ammo boxes said Black Hills, but that may have been for guns other than the Gatling guns. The Gatling guns were very, very cool!

What I want to know is where one finds a functional Gatling gun (much less two) to use on the show?

The cut in the slide is to allow the spring on the longer models (34/35) proper cycling.

I'm really excited to see different weapons used. I feel that of the seasons (I, II, and III) that this new season is offering the most diverse armory selections. I can't wait to see what other pieces of history will be brought in.

I've seen the first and second episode so far.
I've liked all the challenges. The second elimination challenge is my favorite so far. Shooting at multiple targets is a great way to test concentration. Not sure that target identification was much of a factor.

Don't really care for the crawling through tubes and mud part. Mostly because I'd be lousy at it:o

Some of the challenges have been pretty good. I liked the gated cannonballs contraption. Combined accuracy, "going slow quickly", and strategy. I want one for my range fun!

I could do without the "voting off the island" drama: alliances, posturing, get rid of the end game threat instead of the weak link, etc. Make it the two lowest scores face off, and if more than two then fine have three or four face off and the lowest score walks off.

The are introducing a lot more than just accuracy: can they deal with pressure, develop a on the spot strategy, efficiently operate an unfamiliar arm? Overall interesting and less drama than most reality shows. And they have great slow motion shots.

Considering his winning performance in the elimination challenge ("you smoked me"), I guess its fair for him to add pistol to his resume'

That's really the salient point. IF you learn to shoot revolvers with any degree of competence, then the carry over to a semi auto really isn't a far stretch.

Stance, grip, sight picture, and trigger squeeze though a bit longer and heavier on a revolver (assuming double action) isn't that different than shooting a semi auto.

Though I shoot Semi-Auto in all the multi-gun shoots I am lucky enough to get out and shoot, I still prefer the solid feel of a 625 with my belt loaded with moon clips when shooting pistol only matches.

I believe the Gatlings were in .45-70. The ammo looked right, and it was the common caliber for the guns in that era. It is Black Hills ammo, a couple very clear shots of the ammo boxes.

I think (don't know for sure, but it seems reasonable) that the exotic firearms are loaned to the show by collectors / dealers. Last season, a pair of Tommyguns were in one of the challenges. Where else could they come from but a well heeled collector or a machinegun dealer?

The T&E mechanism on the Gatlings was adequate, and provided a basis for later designs. I loved the one comment about how they were the "steampunk" of machineguns!:D

The red team is getting hammered, and team "cohesion" is suffering, evidenced by the latest elimination round. The early decision to vote for the lowest team challenge performers was not held to. Instead, the push was for trying to rid the team of who was felt to be "weak", to increase their odds later on. Bad move, IMHO, they are forgetting that eventually, there will be NO teams, and it will be all individual vs individual.

Looking at next weeks previews, we are going to veer off into the thrown weapons again, not my personal favorite, and something that I feel doesn't really fit with a show named Top SHOT. Oh well. Can't wait to see what other unusual challenges and guns they get back to the week after.

I think bows are ok, you shoot a bow. You even shoot a slingshot or blowgun. You don't shoot a knife or tommyhawk.

One thing I would like to see is a challenge where they either get to use their personal firearms, and/or one where each competitor picks one from a selection to use for that challenge, then cannot use that choice for any others.

There are lots of things I'd love to see them do, (which they likely won't), but so far, I rate this season better for the lower levels of drama, and fair for the challenges. Hope it improves. Love seeing lots of non-current arms. Puts a real challenge out there, especially for the younger shooters. Kind of helps level the playing field some, since the younger shooters may be a bit better shape physically, but are not as likely to have much experience with the older era weapons.

Agreed! May just record it and watch it when I have nothing better to do.

I really liked the elimination challenge from the week before (The rolling cannon balls) I wish I had the time and ingenuity to build something that cool.

The G34 was a Salient Arms Custom like many have said before me. They re-finish the barrel and slide. The Cuts are to reduce weight of the slide and therefore the muzzle flip. I don't think being a revolver guy helped him much with the trigger considering the Tier 1 race trigger used in that gun has no slack or takeup, no overtravel and breaks like glass at 1.625 pounds. It was really a match of strategy and not choking under pressure. the Revolver dude just had a better strategy that resulted in not putting much pressure on him.

I should clarify by stating a good friend of mine has one and we measured the trigger with a brownells trigger pull gauge.

Latest episode: trick shooting! Shooting tiny things with a Volquartsen 10/22, shooting a S&W 686 upside down DA with the pinkie finger! Shooting the 686 blindfolded! And the elimination challenge, a 10rnd hip shoot with a pair of Schoefields!

Interesting to watch, but for me, taking someone who hasn't even dreamed of trying them, and making them compete with trick shooting isn't a fair competition.

On the other hand, Top Shot isn't about fair competition, at least as far as the background skills of the contestants are concerned.

Or maybe they are, this season, they have, so far, had many more challenges with weapons that NONE of the competitors are likely to ever have used than they have in previous shows.

Its just too bad that some of the contestants (and if you have been watching, you know who I mean) don't seem to have a grown-up's emotional maturity.

I don't have a television,,,

Well, I have a TV,,,
But I can't get cable where I live.

The only time I get to see the show is at my watering hole.

I was intrigued with the previews of the man shooting the revolver upside down,,,
Someone here mentioned it was a S&W 686,,,
I just bought one of those.

I think I'll try it with a Model 63 first,,,
I just wanna be able to say I tried it one time.
