Thoughts (perhaps value) on Unfired Ruger Security Six?

I doubt it will ever be carried. It belongs to my uncle who has no real interest in carry nor in revolvers. He wouldn't own that one if it hadn't been an inheritance.

I'm going to have fun loading for it though.... if I could find brass.:(

Well... reloading supplies on the way... The Redneck up above ^^^^ found some brass for me but they didn't have the dies or bullets I wanted and their shipping was silly for just brass. (Thanks anyway, C.R.:))

But I found some .38 brass at MidSouth, along with some bullets and dies so I should be good to go by next weekend.

I'm going to try some Trail Boss loads first. I'm going for a load where I can see the bullet fly.:D

We've put probably 40 rounds through the old girl now and I'm certain that it was rarely fired, probably no more than a few rounds once.

For one, the sights were WAAAAYYYY off. Like better than a foot left at 20 yards. For another, now having opened, closed, and worked the gun a number of times, there are very obvious drag marks in all the places you expect them to be. If all that happened in little more than 25 rounds or so, it was clearly not much used.

An amazing thing happened today. We were shooting some of my reloads for the gun and my uncle decided to burn some more of the factory ammo. We hadn't touched the sights yet, he was commenting that it was 6 feet left at the 100 yards or so he was lobbing bullets. He got it loaded and I spotted a starling about 75 yards out on his lawn. I said "Shoot that bird." and smirked. He says "Yeah right! It's 6 feet left at that distance!", pulled up, touched it off in SA mode and blew the birds head off.

Trail Boss and seeing the bullets fly

When my wife shoots her bunny phart loads at the indoor range, when I stand behind her I can see the bullets fly. We use Berry's Plated bullets, so they are all shiny unlike lead. :)

At certain indoor ranges that use a particularly bright light at each shooting lane, and especially when using Xtreme bullets, I can EASILY see EVERY single shot of .45 Auto that my buddy shoots on the lane next to me. Every single shot.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY sells bullets that look as ridiculously bright and polished as does Xtreme. It's almost ludicrous. Open a fresh box of Xtreme component slugs and it's like staring at the surface of the sun.

With the relatively slow speed of .45cal hardball...
And the -HUGE- flat base of the bullet...
And the slight angle by glancing to my left from the adjacent shooting lane...
And that irrationally polished Xtreme slug...
All paired with a lightbulb/fixture that almost reminds me of the high intensity lights they use at jewelry stores to show off the pricey stones and gold?

I'm telling you, I can see every single shot.

It's very, very cool.

I was actually rather surprised at the lack of phartness of those Trail Boss loads. They were certainly less than "Full Power" but there was still considerable blast and recoil. Definitely no seeing of the bullets in flight. I'll have to back it down, that was full, 100% loads.

We go about .4 gr. over minimum for 38 special with Trail Boss. Never chronied them but will soon. If the @#$#@#@$ wind and cloudy rainy stuff ever quits.

Those are great guns Brian. My first revolver was a Model 19, but after that one, I went with Rugers for many years. Good solid guns that cost quite a bit less than did a comparable Smith & Wesson. My ex-wife had a 2 3/4" Speed-Six, a fixed sight version of the gun you have. That one got traded off for something else, but we later got a 4" Security-Six in stainless. As far as I know she's still got that one. I tried to buy it from her not long ago, but she wouldn't sell.

Get a T-grip for it. Makes it feel like a different gun. (Back in the day, we used to joke that when Ruger went into business, they bought one tree for making grips. They were still using it.)

At my favorite shop, that gun would be tagged at $450-475.00 and wouldn't last a week on the shelf.

Shot it. Maybe that will get me into the range to fire my still unfired 19-7.
Maybe I will get it done tomorrow.
