Thoughts on a mil spec 1911

SA milspec is awesome.

I CCW one with my winter clothes.

If you get bored of it, SACS can make it into anything from a TRP to a MEU SOC.

I would pay extra for the COLT, it's worth it for the brand name, the reputation, the quality, etc

I once bought a Springfield Armory that came with numerous sub standard parts to save costs

came with a weak recoil spring that needed replacement right out of the box

came with two SA magazines with soft steel un heat treated mag bodies that deformed easily with little use, unreliable

had a soft steel barrel bushing and recoil spring plug that didnt hold up, low quality to save on cost.

You wont have any of those problems with a COLT
Uhhh. I did have some of those very same problems with Colts.

I have purchased 3 Colt Series 80 pistols in the past year-two government models and a National Match. All 3 are great pistols. The Series 80 parts are completely a non issue when it comes down to the trigger pull and reliability. You can take them out and the trigger pull is maybe a couple of ounces less. Not enough for my trigger finger to tell the difference.

Out to 20 yards, the g models will run step for step with the match pistol. Adding distance favors the match, but I think that is as much the sights as anything, not that the standard 3 dots don't do pretty good.

No feed issues with the 8 or 7 round factory magazines with ball, JHP or semi wadcutters.
Never owned a Springfield, but I dont see how they could function any better than my Colts.

Your money-certainly your call.

Go Colt and don't look back. Truly, an accurate pistol, problem free and easy firearm to shoot.

Thanks all. I am not going to lie, there is a part of me that wants to pay the extra dough for the pony alone but i'll probably save the money and go with the Springfield.

You probably just answered your own question.

Anyone who has a Series 80 Colt can revert the innards back to "Series 70" status simply by replacing the hammer, removing the two little levers, replacing them with spacers (washers), and removing the firing pin block. It sure ain't rocket science, folks.

Or just buy the Series 70 reissue model

Has Springfield gone back to building things to spec? They were all over the place there for awhile. Its been a few years since I had one, and the last 6 I had, were pretty much junk, and I swore off them. The only ones I ever trusted, were their early, 80's era guns that were very close to Colt/GI specs.

I carried 1911's for about 25+ years, and the only ones I trusted, were the Colts and GI guns. I even prefered the Series 80 guns for that firing pin block. Never once had an issue with a gun that had one, and the triggers were fine.

Hmmmm. It sounds like you had a Numrich Auto Ordnance 1911.

It sounds a lot like some of the last Springfields I bought.

One was a "Loaded" model, that would not feed hardball out of the box, and had to have a number of parts replaced before it would function properly, and even then, it wasnt relaible.

kimber Springfield and many others make good handguns, but there not COLTs.
Traded off with some cash two Kimbers for two new Colts. :)

Wow! That really sucks, and it certainly sounds out of the ordinary for a Springfield. Even so, I would still choose the Colt.

If only I had pulled the trigger when I started this thread I would have saved myself $100 and gone with the Springfield. Well I thought on it to long and the Colt won my heart, it should be at my LGS in a week. Thank you all for your input and the food for thought, it was a tough decision for sure.

If I had to go out and buy one of them tomorrow, I'd probably get the Springfield Armory. I can't give you a reason that has anymore substance than "Ford vs. Chevy" or "Tastes Great vs. Less Filling".

Honestly Kosh, I could have gone with the Springfield and been just as happy. This might be kind of petty of me but I liked the idea of owning a Colt 1911. I wieghed that and the look of the blued finish vs. the parkerized and the next thing you know the darn Colt was draining my gun fund..:D. Like I said, I thought on it to long, if I would have gone with my initial decision two days ago, a new Springfield would have been on its way.

I'll put up a picture when I get it.

I used the 1911 in my 20 plus years in the army without a hitch and carry conceal the Springfield of which I own two, both very remarkable pistols.
