Thinking Of Getting A 1911

WVSig I had been looking at the Colt for the last month and shouldn't have drug my feet on it. Oh well, you snooze you lose.

I have been looking at the SA mil-specs when they were around $500 at the gunshows.

I had read a few post here and people seemed to be happy with the remington guns.

That's why I mentioned the SA Mil-Spec. It has all the upgrades I want. Plus it has a proper hammer on it.

Whats holding you back from the SA? You've pretty much stated its exactly what you want

ttarp I am bad about procrastinating. Actually I like to check my options like I am doing now. I have shot a SA 1911 and it was a damn fine pistol. I put the first shot almost dead center of the bullseye. The other 15 shots were right around the first bullet. That was at 15 yards with a gun I had never fired.

But there have been a few threads with people reporting problems with them. So I am checking my options. Some of those options will be availability of brass, bullets and dies. Plus a bullet mould. I have way over a thousand pounds of lead. I have lots of powder and primers. I reload for just about everything I shoot. I have been trying to find Starline 357 brass for awhile and its a no go. I don't want to buy a gun I can't get ammo or componants for.

There are no shortage of 1911s on gunbroker. Matter of fact there are 27 pages of just Colt 1911s.

I may call Colt on monday and see if that are going to do the rebate thing again and if they are then the 1991 will be at the top of the list.

If you are willing to stretch your budget to 800 you can get a spring field range officer or loaded model. Nice pistols. I own the loaded model. I have heard the Remington's and rugers are good around $650. So are the sti Spartans. I would say get a Springfield. Forged slide and frame, and mine has been 100 percent reliable with factory mags and a 8rd kimber magazine. I guess it depends on what you want. I chose Springfield because I believe they make a stronger gun. Strength wise. If you want all american under 1000 you can get an auto ordnance for around 400, Ruger around $600, SIG around $800+

I think it was a CZ that was posted on here a couple of weeks ago that will be built by Charles Daly that looks interesting.
Charles Daly never built anything, they imported pistols built by other companies under their name or sourced parts and had them assembled by other companies and then marketed them under the Daly name.

According to a gunsmith friend that is a CZ/DW dealer, the CZ rep was at there shop this week and said that Dan Wesson is building the new CZ 1911s.

Thanks P71Pilot for the info. The SA has been on my radar for a couple of years now. The fancier guns don't do it for me. I like simple, spartan type of guns. Rugged and tough and bullet proof.

WC145 I am still learning about who builds what out of what materials and parts. So thanks for getting me straight.

You know, the funnest part of getting a new gun can be deciding what new gun to get. My Holy Grail gun for many years was a Smith & Wesson model 631 32 mag with a 4" barrel. I found them for sale but at much higher prices than I was willing to pay. I was on the S&W forum and made my desires known and someone said "there is one for sale here now". It cost me around $775 but was in the range I was willing to spend. It's worth every penny I paid for it. I really like 32 caliber guns.

I did check and getting brass and bullets shouldn't be a problem. Lots of once fired brass on GB and midway has FMJ bullets in stock. I have plenty of stock for the guns I have now but don't want to get caught not being able to shoot a new purchase.

For your budget and frequency of use you are talking about I would have to agree with several other members here; Rock Island or Ruger SR1911. I currently have my Rock Island and it's been flawless, I sold my Ruger. I had no problems with the Ruger, great pistol for the money. My personal preference for a 1911 is a 9mm caliber rather than .45 and currently Ruger does not offer a 1911 in 9mm. If Ruger ever offers one in 9mm I'll be one of the first in line. 9mm is cheaper to shoot and, for me, more enjoyable to shoot. Others may disagree and I don't want to get your question off track. Also, consider looking at a Tactical version of the 1911 you decide to buy if the manufacturer offers one. Most of the time they are not that much more money, in the case of Rock Island, a Tactical 1911 is only $40 or so more than a standard GI model. I hope that helps. Good Luck.

Honestly do people even bother to read the OP and his responses. He wants an upgraded GI style gun. By upgraded he does not seem to want a beaver tail, Novak style sights, extended safeties etc... He is not looking for tactical cool. He also prefers blued gun over a stainless one but people keep suggesting the opposite.

He wants s GI type gun with usable sights not GI sights, flared lowered ejection point and a spur hammer in blue.

People please read the OP

I would take a Ruger SR1911 over a Rock Island. The fit and finish on the Ruger are remarkably good for the price of the gun. About on a par with $1000 Colts.

If your budget stretches to around $1000 a Colt Government or XSE is a terrific gun. Wonderful right out of the box and very upgradable if the bug bites.

My $.015

I haven't seen or heard about any issues with SA Mil-Specs, they're solid, well built guns that run. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if it met my needs. And, on the off chance that you have problems with one, Springfield has about the best customer service in the industry, they'll make it right and pay shipping both ways.

One post on an interweb forum has you spooked? If that was the standard we all went by no one would buy anything, eat anywhere, stay in any hotel, fly on any airline, etc, etc.

Every manufacturer has a lemon slip through once in a while, it's inevitable, instead of focusing on that odd occurence, look at their overall reputation and how they deal with issues when they do arise. S.A. is one of the best in the business.

Hate them, bash them, all well and good. I have the Taurus in 9 mm and a fellow shooter has 2, 1 in 9 mm and 1 in 45 and all three have been flawless in operation. There is one for sale at the range that I would jump on but at this time I'm so broke I can't pay attention.:(

WC145 I take all internet reviews with a large dose of salt. I have read far more good about most all guns than bad reviews. Happy people seldom post. Folks with a problem scream from the mountain tops.

Nananokalronin its not so much a budget gun I am looking for but just a basic with no frills. If I could find a real colt 1911 from WWII that was original and hadn't been tinkered with for a good price I would pick that. I ran into a local cop a few months ago and that was just what he was wearing. I spotted it and asked him about it. He was happy to tell me what he had. The pride was obvious.

There should be another local gunshow in the next few weeks. I plan on going by myself so I can move at my own pace and have a good hard look at whats out there. I like to hold something before I buy it. There are normally several people trying to sell 1911s walking the aisles. I just don't know if they are selling a problem of their own making.
