I'm the fly in the ointment.......
My vote would be for the S&W. Now before anyone starts to yell,
let me qualify my decision:
1) I've had MANY S&W autos over the years: S&W 4006, S&W 4506, S&W 4506-1, S&W 1006 (my latest buy), S&W
3913 (stolen, BTW), S&W Sigma, S&W Sigma (enhanced), S&W
4516 (traded for my 4506-1), original S&W M59, original S&W
M39 (my dad's). Maybe I'm unusual or just lucky, but in poring
over my shooting logs I have expended 13,125 rounds of 9mm of
various makes, 8,912 rounds of .45 automatic, 4,765 rounds of
.40 cal., and so far, just shy of 1000 rounds of 10mm. My failures
to feed, extract, and fire number about two dozen, combining all
of the guns and calibers. I am not necessarily a clean freak, but I
do maintain my guns. That's roughly 24 failures of different kinds
in over 27,000 rounds through ten separate pistols. I have had
ZERO breaks with any S&W automatic, and accuracy with a pistol
seems a bit moot unless when you are talking about pistol distances i.e., "here to over there".
2) I have had exactly ONE Glock (G19), and I fired about 250 rounds through it. The first TWO rounds of the FIRST magazine
were failures. It didn't jam up after that, but in the 250 rounds
I fired, my skill with the Glock wasn't as great as what it was
with the Smiths.
3) The "sellout of S&W" was preceded by Colt and Ruger( that
was when it was Bill Ruger himself who suggested the ten-round
magazine limit), so IMO, that isn't a viable argument, as most of
the folks I have heard badmouth S&W still praise Colt and Ruger.
4) Prices vary from place to place. I have seen various used Glocks
going for about $600 around here, while perfectly serviceable Smiths go for about $400. (Come on down and go shopping!)
By all means, if you like a Glock, then go with a Glock. But IMO,
you ought to try out both and see which one you like better.
