Thinking about my next purchase. Glock vs S&W

Glad to see Spackler's post. My first semi-auto for concealed carry was a S&W 4013 (NOT the TSW version). It has been flawless, with well over 1,000 rounds through it. I also have and carry a Glock 23 and a Glock 27; they're great guns, if somewhat homely looking. Turns out I really like both the Glocks and the S&W. Even with the Glocks, the S&W still gets carried fairly regularly.

Bountyh, if you've never read anything positive about S&W semi-autos (pre-agreement, of course), you need to do a search on "4013" and "3913." Both have received very good reviews, especially in their pre-TSW incarnations.

While I love the S&W revolvers, I find their autos to not be of the same quality. Glocks, on the other hand, are excellent firearms. Not sure why you need a 30 if you're getting issued a 27, but that's your call.

Glock. The only Smith pistol I've ever found to be worthwhile is the 3913, and the "tacticals" are WAY overpriced for what you get.

AWWWwww, Lightsped...

You wouldn't have asked if you didn't already know the Glock is the best choice. :) I've had mine almost three years (G27) and haven't had a single malfunction. If I had to choose only one auto, it'd be a Glock.

Glock is a much better pistol than S&W. It will be easier to resell later on and has better customer service than S&W. And S&W is a bunch of traitors who are getting their just due. Look around at gun shops and gun shows, you will see a smaller amount of S&Ws every time.

I'm the fly in the ointment.......

My vote would be for the S&W. Now before anyone starts to yell,
let me qualify my decision:

1) I've had MANY S&W autos over the years: S&W 4006, S&W 4506, S&W 4506-1, S&W 1006 (my latest buy), S&W
3913 (stolen, BTW), S&W Sigma, S&W Sigma (enhanced), S&W
4516 (traded for my 4506-1), original S&W M59, original S&W
M39 (my dad's). Maybe I'm unusual or just lucky, but in poring
over my shooting logs I have expended 13,125 rounds of 9mm of
various makes, 8,912 rounds of .45 automatic, 4,765 rounds of
.40 cal., and so far, just shy of 1000 rounds of 10mm. My failures
to feed, extract, and fire number about two dozen, combining all
of the guns and calibers. I am not necessarily a clean freak, but I
do maintain my guns. That's roughly 24 failures of different kinds
in over 27,000 rounds through ten separate pistols. I have had
ZERO breaks with any S&W automatic, and accuracy with a pistol
seems a bit moot unless when you are talking about pistol distances i.e., "here to over there".

2) I have had exactly ONE Glock (G19), and I fired about 250 rounds through it. The first TWO rounds of the FIRST magazine
were failures. It didn't jam up after that, but in the 250 rounds
I fired, my skill with the Glock wasn't as great as what it was
with the Smiths.

3) The "sellout of S&W" was preceded by Colt and Ruger( that
was when it was Bill Ruger himself who suggested the ten-round
magazine limit), so IMO, that isn't a viable argument, as most of
the folks I have heard badmouth S&W still praise Colt and Ruger.

4) Prices vary from place to place. I have seen various used Glocks
going for about $600 around here, while perfectly serviceable Smiths go for about $400. (Come on down and go shopping!)

By all means, if you like a Glock, then go with a Glock. But IMO,
you ought to try out both and see which one you like better.

ANM

ABM - Thank you for at least proving one of my points. The used Glocks go for $ 600 and the Smiths go for $ 400. And the Glock owners get that much for them.

sks

If you're buying a used Glock for $600 you are getting ripped big time.

That said, Glock and S&W are not in the same league.

Go Glock!

I paid $575 for my 4013TSW about three years ago. I don't know what they are going for now, but I recently saw a new 3913TSW priced at $550. I think the 3913 is perhaps the finest Smith auto ever produced. I think it's a bargain at $550.
I almost bought a new Glock 19 a few weeks ago, it was $499.

I passed on a table of NEW Glocks at a recent gunshow in the low $500s.

There were also a bunch of factory reconditioned Glocks in the $400s.

I picked up a Glock 23 for $300 one time but that was an anomaly. You can frequently get them used from mid $400 here in CA, new prices around $550.

sks- look, I'm not trying to badmouth Glock. However, I have seen
something to the effect of "the Glock has become like the
1911- a status symbol" brought up in other threads, and it
seems to me to ring true at times. It's normal to promote
one's favorite gun/car/etc., as the best, but I've owned and
shot lots of Smiths, and some of the stuff that gets written
about them sounds more like Smith & Wesson - bashing. If
someone was to get the full price that they paid for a used
gun, I'd be surprised. In that respect, I agree with leedesert
and Cave Canem, in that if you paid $600 for a used Glock
that you'd be getting ripped off. But that wasn't the point-
what I was responding to was the idea that the S&W's
aren't worth the money, with which I disagree, and that they
aren't very good when you do buy them, with which I also
disagree.

ANM - No offense taken at any of your remarks. My point was not that you need to pay $600 for a used Glock, or Smith or SIG. The only thing I've bought used for $600 was a P7M8. Then I sold it for $900 two months later. I was only saying that if you look at the used guns, Glocks generally go for considerable more than a Smith.

No matter where you stand on the S&W deal, no one can deny that S&W are not the hottest sellers today and that they have lost a considerable amount of business.

I don't own a Glock although I have owned two in the past. I owned a Smith but sold it also.

In any case if I had to purchase one it would be a Glock.

Yeah this is easy - Glock 30. If the Smith was more accurate or more reliable I would be really surprised.

Glock 30 in my carry stable. For when I think the TIHS may hit the fan -- bad neighborhoods, late night trips, etc. Good HD gun too with a pair of G21 hi caps fully loaded.

Lightsped:

Let me get this straight - you actually have to THINK about this ?? This is the proverbial "no-brainer.

1. S&W DID sell us out.

2. S&W's can't BEGIN to compare to the Glocks in reliability.

Glock

I always leave politics out of gun choices. With that said, the Glock is simply the better pistol. I have NEVER liked S&W semi-autos (the one I had was a jam-o-matic with piss-poor SA trigger pull). At least with a Glock, you have a good chance of getting a reliable pistol. In short, quality control is better with Glocks, when you invest in a S&W semi-auto, you never know what you are getting (IMO).

Hey Light,
The subcompact .45ACP Glock is the G36!!! I just got rid of my G30 in favor of the G36!!! Give it some thought!! Politics aside, S&W has not made a decent gun in years!!! If you find one that works right, then keep it!! It's a gem amoungst the coal!!!
