These guys were policing their own hood

This photo was taken at Johnny White's Sports Bar on Bourbon Street, New Orleans two days after Katrina. The bottles and kegs are full of alcohol. It is for sale. The Bud Lite case behind him is open. The man with the shotgun is not drunk. The shotgun is loaded. I had his name, but I have forgotten it. Johnny White's Sports Bar has never closed, and remained open throughout the hurricaine. Here's another.

In regards to the other photo...........I believe it was taken in South Louisiana in a town called Westwego in Jefferson Parish. I'll give my reasons when I can be certain. Not all of these areas were flooded. Most had some wind damage. The lack of blatant storm damage actually enhances the photo's credibility to me. Based on the wide range of ages represented among these men, I seriously doubt this is a staged photo taken in Muncie or somewhere else. Some of the guys are perhaps fratenity age, but not all of them. Based on their differences, they look like a bunch of neighbors to me, not a bunch of friends. These fellows did not care if any of us approved of or believed this photo. They did not take it for us. It was taken for themselves.

The golf cart can be charged on a generator.

I would not be surprised if they had a smoker going.

edited to add another pic:

Are you sure thats a downed powerline? Around here we occasionally have pole wires that run down into the ground and that is the way they are supposed to be. If it was really downed would they all be standing around it? That wouldn't be very smart.

If you look behind the guy's legs with the BFR, you will see a curve to the power line that shows it is not a support line. If the power is off for hundreds of miles around, the danger of this wire is minimal, still not smart, but not a live electrical wire either.

I gotta wonder how much looting was taking place in the 'burbs.
Looters from Baton Rouge have been arrested in Metarie Louisiana, in the suburbs.

Xaviers holding the cards as far as I can see.

He's not only answered but one upped you all.

Sorry, have to give credit where credit is due.

*sorry, but I have to give credit when it's due.

I'll bet that the "SAFEST" place around! When there's "NO" cops you'll won't care who drink a beer or two!
I think that's a great picture! :)

That picture is an embarrassment. TheBluesMan is 100% correct.

E-mail it to HCI. I'm sure they'll appreciate the inherent humor.

When I first saw that picture, I thought, "Man, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near those guys!"

... which was, after all, their point. :o

Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut. -- Ernest Hemmingway

I'll admit that the sign would be a deterrent, but this picture will be bouncing around the 'net for years to come and will do more damage to our cause than good.

Alcohol abuse and firearms just don't mix.

Xavier's bar pictures do not depict alcohol abuse.

The picture of the "Drunks with guns" was taken in Harahan as you can see from my post of a link to it in #35 of this thread.

Then that explains why I believe a friend of mine is in this pic. Harahan is across the river from Westwego, which is where he was headed when he left my home.

If our cause is to not offend tea totaling old ladies who want to ban guns and alcohol, I suppose this photo hurts our cause.

If our cause is to show that law abiding men will band together and arm themselves against criminals in the absence of law enforcement, that they might persevere, have no harm come to them or their families, commit no crimes, no lootings, and no lynchings, and then go back to the job of rebuilding their community, then it just might support our cause. This photo shows that gun ownership is a good thing in a crisis. It also shows that men will sometimes make a poor choice while spray painting a piece of plywood, and that photos go around the internet like crazy.

Sometimes you just have to look the gun grabbers in the eye and say "So what?" or maybe "Prove it." None of these photos depict alcohol abuse. A spray painted sign stating "Drunks with Guns" does not equal a man drinking alcohol and shooting firearms. This is like saying Dale Earnhardt Jr. races drunk because his car has a big Budweiser sticker on it.

Like I said before, there are plently of photos, motion pictures, and videos for gun grabbers to choose from. They will never choose this photo because it also depicts the unassailable truth when it comes to the value of firearms in a disaster. I've yet to see them publicizing Koreans with evil assault AK47s in LA, and I don't think they will touch this one either.

Good post, Xavier. :)

It has been a pleasure debating the "finer points" of this issue with you.

Thank you for being a part of The Firing Line.

Same same, BluesMan. :)

This is truely a pic that can be looked at like that proverbial half full/half empty glass of water.

For the record, I do agree that alcohol consumption does not mix with firearms useage. Around me, not even a beer. Others may feel differently, but I do not stick around if the two are mixing. TBMs points are well taken as well.

Funny photo. Who cares what gun control advocates think of it? The only way to change someone's mind is to educate them. Educate more people on the safe usage and ownership of firearms, and they will see the humor in this photo without being offended.

I think you're right on both counts.

Shame on them for caring more about protecting their homes and neighborhood than they did about the RKBA cause on the 'net!

:D

(Seriously, good points on both sides above. Thanks for the food for thought, guys.)

We had our guns. People determined to stand up for themselves survived...the looters went somewhere else. -- Bob Zirgulis, on protecting his business during the Los Angeles riots, 1992

Ain't that the truth.
That picture is already making the internet rounds.
So far, people have said it was taken in N.O. La. and also Texas.

Edit:
Where ever it was,,,it's an odd place where golf carts and signs cast a shadow,,,but people don't,,,the red background bleeds over a hand that's supposed to be in the foreground,,,,and a foot morphs into a tire...

I'm not an animal, I'm a HUMAN BEING!!!!

I am a refugee of Muncie, Indiana myself. I endured the misfortune of growing up there. I also worked at the "Generous Motors" transmission plant in the late 70's for three years before I made good on my escape.

I thought the "drunks with guns" photo was a publicity shot of the Muncie city council...:D
