A Little North of DFW...

Yesterday at Best Pawn in Sherman, TX... several cases of 9mm PMC 115gr FMJ priced at $255/1,000.

It's the first time in a year or so that I've seen a retailer selling BULK quantities of ordinary 9mm practice ammo AT RETAIL, WITHOUT charging an arm and a leg for it... and the boxes WEREN'T leaping out the door.

Still no .22, though.

I lucked up on .22 ammo ..

I had notifications on for basically any .22's from Midway USA. I sponsor a local boyscout group to shoot .22's. I was running seriously low. I got the notification yesterday that Federal American Eagle 40gr. high velocity was in stock in the 5000 round case. It cost me $223 shipped. So just a heads up keep the Midway notifications on. You need to be quick, this sold out in 3 minutes, but it pays off.

I too have noticed the past few days that midway has has some in stock via gunbot. I used to get notifications from them and would immediately click the link in the email and it was already sold out, so I gave upon them. Keep an eye on cabelas very early in the morning. I lucked up and found (2) 1000 rounds of Winchester m22 at Walmart two nights ago. That puts me at around 12,000 rounds total. I feel more comfortable about shooting my 22's now.

Good on you for sponsoring the kids.

I found 300 rounds of Winchester from Cabela's a few weeks ago.
My brother is a Boy Scout leader and was asking me if I had any, so I sent it his way for the kids to shoot.

12,000 rounds? I have about 120 on hand, and not finding anything:(

I too lucked out a few months ago when I found 2100 rounds of Federal 22LR in a brand spanking new military grade ammo can on Cabela's web site for $99. I have refused to pay any jacked up prices though all this and on occasionally will get my paws on some.
I just wish other shooters would just stop paying $75 for a brick from these vampires and everything would settle down soon.

About six months ago I had a 525 brick in checkout and I entered the wrong password and by the time I re-entered my password they took it out of my checkout window. Missed it by seconds. Somebody at midway took it out of my checkout window right before my eyes. I watched it disappear, oh the horror!

I missed out on the federal champion cases for 194. They were sold out in under 5 minutes, because I checked it 5 minutes after the email came and they were out :(

I try to keep at least 5000 rounds for me and the wife. We burn through 500 or more a month. But honestly me and a few others donate close to 20,000 rounds a year(before the shortage), to the Boy Scouts and 4-H.

Soooooo
For the people whining about anybody obtaining 10-12-27,000 rounds of 22...
Do you think they procured them overnight?
I'd hardly think so...I give them kudos for having the means and ability to do so.
If the feces ever hit the air handling system, I hope I have plenty of larger caliber ammo to possibly fend off people with that mentality..
"Give me some of that ammo! You have too much"

It seems to me that most people would shoot a brick a weekend just a couple years ago. I have enough to last me for a year of normal shooting. It is out there, you just have to be willing to jump on it when you do find it.

To those complaining about my stash of ammo take note that I had a good bit before the crisis hit. I shoot my .22's more than any of my other guns. I'm not one of the people that resells the ammo online. My ammo is for mine and my families enjoyment, and for the next revolution. You guys would have plenty of .22 if you just went to Walmart everyday before work, lunch break, and after work.

On the contrary...
Back a dozen years ago when my wife and I both shot a number of times each week, we'd buy .22 ammo 10 bricks at a time when it went on sale.

She's buy 10 and I'd by 10 since most places had a 10 brick limit.

Those 20 bricks lasted us a little over a month and a half.

It wasn't unusual for us to have a stockpile of 75,000 rounds of .22lr.
A few times we hit the store twice during the sale.

It was a simple matter of economics. Why pay more for something than you have to?
I remember the prices were a couple of bucks a brick off when they went on sale - $7.99 on sale instead of $9.99 regular price.

Just arrived...Whoohooo

Too long indeed. I'm scratching my head trying to figure out what fundamental change occurred to create scarcity of .22LR ammo. Supply of rifles couldn't have changed significantly in the past couple of years. Did production suddenly get cut? Seems like current shortage would encourage more production...supply/demand and all that. Darned peculiar. Glad I had some stashed away.

And to get back on topic. Walmart in Sterling, VA had boxes of .22LR when I stopped by there last night for some motor oil.

Best,

The prolonged ammo shortage that started around early 2009 and then accelerated in the fall of 2012 seemed to cause a basic attitude change among gun owners. While shortages used to happen periodically, and usually only locally, now the shortages were national and long lasting. Many people, including myself, developed a mindset of always being on the look out for ammunition, rather than just buying what was needed for the next range visit or two, and doing this frequently. Even now with the shortages seeming to be lessening, but not gone, so many people just continue to buy whenever ammo is available.

I guess for most of us there will come a time when we say "enough is enough". I used to keep about 1,000 rounds of 22LR around at any given time, enough to cover several times at the range, but now I keep more like 3-4,000 if I can. But I think if I keep buying and get up to about 6,000 rounds I probably will think that the shortage is over and stop buying every time I see some on the shelves. I do admit, however, that while in the past I only stocked up on any ammo as a convenience, now I find it gives me a reassuring feeling to see stacks of boxes of ammo on my shelf, far more than I will likely use even in several months of shooting.

Here in Illinois, by the way, I find that GAT Guns, just north of Elgin, almost always has a good stock of ammo for sale. The last few times I visited the only buying limit they had was for 22LR.
